RE #48 - thank you for the response, however the full screen toggle button is greyed out and therefore not adjustable. Wonder if it was something during installation. Thank you anyway.

............................Moderator Comment.......................

Hi DayTrader. that's strange, i'm able to toggle between the two? Check to see if the game is being played in admin mode by right clicking then select 'run as Administrator'. If that doesn't work, right click again and select properties. From the window that opens, select compatibility. Try selecting some of the graphics options to see if that unlocks the windowed/full screen toggle; finally, try changing your screen resolution temporarily.

Love the game and so far have found no glitches but I am offended by they language. There is absolutely no reason for the character to use God's name in vain or say damn. It adds absolutely nothing to the game and I would never let my children play it just for that reason alone.

Great game! I downloaded it yesterday and then spent most of the day playing it. I haven't had so much fun in a while. The graphics were great, the story fun and the different types of skill games were interesting and fun. The only suggestion I would make is to provide the occasional 'hint' in the games - especially the puzzle ones. While I love games and play them often, there are certain kinds that my brain just can't seem to wrap itself around, so I can't solve those. So, I would try and after about 10 minutes of trying, would have to hit the 'skip' button when I would have preferred a hint or two to help me solve it.

Otherwise - great game!!

I have not finished this game yet but I wanted to give some feedback. Overall, I like the look and feel of the game. I tend not to like hidden object games but this one mixes it up enough that I am enjoying it. The minigames and puzzles are interesting, though at times I feel lost as to what I am supposed to be doing. For example, in one I was supposed to match the runes but nothing said to do that until I clicked on the "hint" button. I have yet to skip a puzzle, or need the hints to find anything, but a little more direction would be helpful.

I really like the journal and how it updates as we go. I would enjoy a little more back story, but I anticipate there will be more as I progress.

One piece I would definitely recommend the publisher work on is the mouse tracking. While playing the game the "game" arrow is always several pixels away from my mouse's arrow. It is confusing that I can see both, but very frustrating when I have to overshoot my mouse placement to see the "hand" to select an object. At some points they appeared connected, but other times very far apart. This is reducing my enjoyment in the game as it can be very annoying.

Any way to get it off full screen? Thank you.

Go to the main menu and select options. You'll find a toggle to go to windowed mode. If you look at the fourth image I posted in my review above you can see the full screen toggle. Just click on that to go to windowed mode.

I downloaded Mystery of Mortlake Mansion today in different path. I viewed the folders and in the version.txt of past download and today - both have the same:

13:15:31,71 04.03.2011 en v1.583.38036 so not sure what the difference is.

I really enjoy this game. No problems problems with d/l orinstall or play.

I played this game last time it was on GotD, and have changed computers, so I'm thrilled to have it again. I will definitely play it again. It's an excellent HOG/puzzler, with beautiful graphics.

Too often in HOGs, the objects are badly or sloppily hidden, like invisible on a too-dark screen or looking like something else entirely. You feel like the developers are cheating instead of putting thought into good design. Mortlake Mansion, though, is absolutely outstanding. You can get lost in the complex scenes, fascinated by interesting stuff that's not what you're looking for. The puzzles are well designed and range from somewhat to extremely challenging -- but I was able to solve them all, eventually, without resorting to a walkthrough. After -- what's it been, a year or so? -- I'm sure it will be freshly challenging. Thanks, GGotD!

And thanks, Whiterabbit, for your information and patient guidance each weekend. I look forward to your posts. I hope things are going great with your new house, and you'll be comfortably settled there before too long.

Thank you for your feedback History Mom. I'm really looking forwards to moving (probably mid July). The consultation period has just ended on our propsed plans and no one has objected. hopefully we will be clear to start building work within a few weeks. We only ever meant to live in our present house a couple of years while we settled into our new teaching careers, but we've ended up staying here for 20 years. We've had an extension, but still needed somewhere bigger as the kids are growing up (12 & 14). We wnated a place with no stairs as I'm prone top falling becasue of my spinal injury. We also wanted a large garden and larger room throughout, which we've got with the new house. i'd say its almost my dream house. :) Can't wait to move. (Though I'll miss this place as its got a lot of memories)

I've never been able to get past the hall and library! Can't find the other eye and the crystals. Help!

...........................Moderator comment...........................

It's quite late in the day now. i'd post a request for help over in the game discussion forums 9you do need to register to post, but it only takes a few momewnts to set up a profile. I'll check to see if I posted anything about this game last time it was given away. Otherwise, i'll set up a thread where community members can post requests for help. alternatively you could try the walkthrough I've linked to in my review or watch one of the many You Tube video walkthroughs. I've also linked to a few of those in the video section. You'll find pages of them on You Tube. Hope this helps?

There was a thread posted last year about this game which you'll find via the following link:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/11340#post-99931

Post any questions there. you are more likely to get an answer so late in the giveaway.

Wrapper doesn´t work!!! Setup now works without admin rights but now i am unable to install!!! Juste checks for giveaway availability online and then shows "successfully activated" without doing anything else!!! System Win7 x64 ultimate. Executing with XP compatibility also doesn´t do any good. No installer popping up!!!

Are you using firefox? If so, check to see that Inrewnet Explorer isn't set to offline. That should cure the problem. If not, check the FAQ section over in the Game discussion forums. i've linked to it in my review.

Ah yes, I remember this game from the last time it was a giveaway.

Same thing happened: downloaded, opened (it had saved from the last time I had played, then deleted from my hard drive. Apparently it saves something on the hd even after a uninstall). Downloaded to my Windows XP Tablet PC Pro SP3 with 1.2G processor, 1.5G Ram, which should be 'strong' enough to play.

The graphics look like 8 bit, everything is clunky and slow. There are bright flashes of light and where I can make anything out, the game only says 'something is missing' or 'you need xxx here' or 'unable to play at this time'. The 'help crystal' only tells me either 'nothing to do here' or 'you need xxx here' but no way to actually play the game.

Deleted again and hope next giveaway is good. Glad so many like this game but Mortlake Mansion is just unplayable on my computer.

Hi Brick, the system specs for this game require the following

System Requirements:

Operating system: XP, Vista, Win 7
C.P.U. – 2GHz
System RAM – 512MB
Video RAM – 128Mb
Direct X – 9.0 or higher.

Remember that XP uses quite alot of system RAM. Try using Game Booster to reduce system resources. That said, your processor is a little under powered for this game at only 1.2GHz. The minimum requirement is a 2GHz processor. It's probably that which is causing the visual problems you are experiencing.

Game runs fine on 32-bit XP Pro, SP3.

I don't like HOGs in general, but I'm glad I decided to download THIS! I installed it at about 6:30pm, and lost myself in it for nearly an hour-and-a-half... :D

The animation is mostly excellent, though the 'evil'(?), hooded character does seem rather cardboard-cutout/shadow theatre in his arm movements, and doesn't really seem to interact with the scenery (though that may well be deliberate, given the theme of the game).

Whilst I, personally, like the lack of a strict time-linit, that lack can mean missing out on an atmosphere of jeopardy - maybe the writers/makers/programmers could implement a time-based option in future versions..?

Although I know it would be extremely difficult, I would sort-of like to have the narrator actually speak my name, since it is included in the original letter.

@Ladyfirst, Are you using a download accelerator? If so, make sure you SAVE the downloaded zip before running it, as the fact that they download parts of your file from/through different sites/channels before re-assembling it CAN give an apparently-corrupted file.

Can't comment on the download or associated problems because I actually purchased this game a few years ago. It runs great on XP. I have not tried it on my Win 7x64 machine.

It is quite memorable in an overcrowded field and though I'm kind of "over" my HOG phase here's what I liked about it:

-There's a decent amount of gameplay. You won't blaze through this in an hour.
-It's not straight HOG. It also has puzzles.
-The puzzles are not too hard but hard enough so you might have to ponder them for a bit.
-It's bright enough so the hidden objects aren't impossible to see.

In general I think Playrix publishes the best casual games. I have had trouble running some of the recent releases on both machines but up until mid-2012 I never had a problem with any of them. So I'm happy to see this even though I already own it.

If you're stuck on the gameplay there are several decent and free walkthroughs online. In addition to the Gamezebo walkthough that Stephen linkedto, Playrix has a walkthrough on their site. I don't know if I'm allowed to mention names but the one with "fish" in the title also has a good walkthrough.

I'm not much for ghosts, ghouls, and such, but I have to admit that "Mortlake Mansion" is one of the "Playrix" renderings that I thoroughly enjoyed; it will be my pleasure to play it again.

And, if you get stuck, there are two walkthrough guides to help you out:

One at "Big Fish": http://www.bigfishgames.com/blog/walkthrough/mystery-of-mortlake-mansion-walkthrough/#4 And . . . . . . . .

One at "GameZebo": http://www.gamezebo.com/games/mystery-mortlake-mansion/walkthrough-cheats-strategy-guide.

I don't generally comment about games because I generally don't get to play them till later that evening or the next day, and sometimes not till days later, but . . . . . . .

I have previously played "Mortlake Mansion" and highly recommend it. It is definitely one of the better games from "Playrix".

Hi - I've tried to install this game twice and both times, after opening the setup.exe, a pink error box pops up and says:

"The setup files are corrupted, or are incompatible with this version of Setup. Please correct the problem or obtain a new copy of the program."

I re-downloaded the game and tried again with the same results.

I couldn't find any information of the forum addressing this error.

Any suggestions?

.........................Moderator Comment........................

Hi Ladyfirst,

Did you follow the link I've provided in my review (in the problems section)? I've posted a FAQ's section that covers this problem.

2 possible fixes:

1) ... Use a different file archiver to unpack the zip file
2) ... Make sure Internet explorer isn't set to offline (if you use firefox it may be offline)

Read through the FAQ's in the Game Discussion sticky section if neither of the above work. If you are still not sucessful after trying all the suggestions made, it may be a problem with your internet connection/provider?

I also got this last time it was offered and really enjoyed playing it. The graphics are on a par with all of Playrixs' games - top-notch. The game action - for those of us who enjoy HOG's - is better than most being offered today, given the propensity toward "windowed" versions that claim to be "full-screen", and rather simplistic plots, dialogue, or even cutscreens that practically give everything away in advance. Playrix games are what I consider to be full and rich experiences, and I tend to keep at them until completed, unlike many of the recent overly-simplistic HOG or M3 game giveaways which I've simply abandoned (no names) and uninstalled.

Mystery earns a solid 9 IMHO. It's well worth getting, and even re-playing. Thanks GGOD and Playrix - still a #1 combo in my book!

(Good luck with the new house project, Stephen! John)

Wow, really emjoying this game! When finished will replay on highest level. I am pleased to see more(Hidden Object)games, that compare with 'Ravenhearst'. I still enjoy Hidden Object games,(unlike a rabbit, I hear! ;>)and find that creating less simple platform hidden object games and publishing more like this, is needed. The only comment or suggestion I have is in the hidden object part. Like 'Ravenhearst' could you use acual images of some of your items (on the list or not)and not all drawings?? thanks... until now. Oh my god, LAG

An option to have less detailed graphics would be a nice add on, so people with crappier computers could also play.

Hi Lampie, download Game booster from Razer. It will enable you to squeeze more memory out of your computer. You can configure it to turn off any background programs that aren't necessary while playing the game, plus it automatically turns off all windows system programs that arehn't required. When you finish playing everything reverts back to normal. Not sure if the v ersion razer are giving away auto reverts or whether you have to click a button. either way, its a simple way of getting games to work, that lag on slower computers.

Hi, I installed Today's "Mystery of Mortlake Mansion" next to a Folder containing my last Giveaway of this Game and called that Folder Mystery of M.M-2. The previous Giveaway that I have shows date: 15/04/2012. Unless I've missed some offering of this Game here since (and I don't imagine "inferior" version would have been offered between April last year and May this year?) - Both Installations are IDENTICAL in Size: 183 MB, and Versions: 13:15:31,71 04.03.2011 en v1.583.38036. Both Folders contain 20 items.

Should Anyone had earlier Version than main offered some years back - my bit of sleuthing:) tells me I have 2 identical Games now. I didn't play it yet (but finished the previous one), so cannot observe any possible differences (or believe there are)

That said - The Game of "Mystery of Mortlake Mansion" is very ENJOYABLE:) and being (arty) sucker for quality graphics, lol, - I found Graphics here to be quite Exquisite!. Game if full of charm, delightful perils, fun to play. Very well designed and put together. Recommended.

Thats odd Fran, my first version (given away last April 2012) was 1MB smaller than today's version. That said, I've not compared the contents. Didn't have time.

I downloaded this game from one of the FREE games sites a couple months ago. I really DIDN'T THINK I would like it because HOG's are normally ICKKKKKKKY! ICKY! But I was playing "Murder in New York" and ACTUALLY liked that one. (How DARE you kill that lil girl!)

However, TRUTHFULLY, I never figured out how to get inside the FRONT DOOR of the mansion. HONESTLY, I only tried for a few minutes before I gave up because HOG's are ICKY and it wasn't worth my effort.

BUT BUT BUT (I like BIG buts and that's no lie!)after your STERLING AMAZING TERRIFIC WONDERFUL MARVELOUS review I am going to download it and try it again. MAYBE I can get inside this time!

The amulet - bottom right corner - keeps flashing every few secs - most off putting - can I turn of the flashing?

I only got as far as finding a few items to the right of the door before I had to give because of the flashing bright light - but when I looked again I had to start from scratch - does it not keep to where you have got too?

........................Moderator comment.....................

I think you have to complete a level/page for it to save. As for the flashing I don't know whether it can be turned off. I didn't really notice it myself.

I found this a while back and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Not only is it available on MyplayCity.com but also at FreeGamePick.com,GameTop.com and JenKat.com. Watch out for toolbars and browser openings for FreeGamePick and GameTop but Jenkat only installs strange.

One of the best HOGs because you have come control. You don't simply go A to B to C but you can choose (from a map) where you want to go next. You are told if there is more to do in a certain location or you have finished with it. You may have to visit the same "room" multiple times for various reasons to complete it.

................................Moderator comment...................................

Thank you for your feedback Diane. Jenkat is probably the best plqace to download this from now (if you missed the giveaway). MPC are still pretty aggressive with the toolbar box popping up whenever you start the game up. I've not downloaded anything from Gametop or FreeGamePick in over a year, so don't know how their policies stand at the moment.

I still have this from a previous giveaway and have completed it. I'm not usually a fan of this type of game (cross between First Person Adventure and Hidden Objects), but for me this is better than most of the others of its kind that I've tried.

The graphics are distinctive, with almost a cel-shaded look as opposed to the usual hand-painted style. The best parts of it come close to generating a 'Myst'-style atmosphere. There's loads of gameplay, but the game shares a certain repetitiveness in this area with others of this type.

The ending is a bit perfunctory, but the build up is good, and overall I enjoyed it.

Could a staff member tell us whether this is a newer version than the previous giveaway, or the same version?

I've bought and played this game one year ago. It installed and worked fine on XP pro SP3.
After playing and ending this game I gave it my sister: she likes HOG's more than I do. Grafics and the story are really nice.

I have downloaded Mystery of mortlake mansion but know they say game expired but there is still 21 hours left. What is the problem?

If you are installing it via Firefox, make sure Internet explorer isn't set to offline. A;lso check your clock to make sure its set to the correct time. Failing these, check the FAQ's section that I've linked to in my review.

So what is new since the last giveaway ?

As for feedback, last time the game was amazing. Played it till the end. Keep up the good work.

It's 1MB larger in size to last years, so there could have been some updates. You'd have to play it through to see the difference as I couldn't find any info on updates. If you still have the origial from last year, you could also compare the two folder contents to see what's different. (to do this you'll need to install the latest version to a different path, or tag new to the end of the installation path so that it doesn't overwrite last years version.

Can I play this game in French?

Try installing the French version first, then install the giveaway one to a different path then copy it over to the French version. Then play to see if the French language has been retained, but in the full version as opposed to the demo. You may have to try this several times swapping specific files over rather than the whole game (giveaway version). I'm no expert so can't say exactly which files you need to copy over and whether it will actually work.

It may be that you just need a configuration file from the French versaion, so also try copying over files from the French demo version to the Giveawayoftheday version.

I already have this game, I bought it on disc last year, and have played it a few times.
It is not always clear what you need to do next, but with a bit of clicking round you get there. The hidden objects are fair but not always easy to see, but then it does get boring if it is too easy. Hints are readily available though.
I like the hidden object games that have some adventure to them, where some objects go into the inventory, to be used elsewhere, and this one does have this.
In my opinion, it is well worth downloading.

I should add to the above - when you go to play it, once you're past the "Loading" stage, you can skip the opening cut-scenes if you want to simply by left-clicking (although they're worth looking at if only for the graphics and the atmosphere).

I downloaded and played this game last time it was offered here and thoroughly enjoyed it. Production values are high, the graphics are very good, there is enough story to keep the interest, and the mini-games vary from quite easy to pretty puzzling - I eventually had to give up on a couple of them! There are the usual sort of mini-games (jigsaw, etc) but also some really tricky bits of logic. For people who like a mixture of HOG, Puzzle and Adventure I would very much recommend it. A really big Pro in my book are that there is a Map showing where you still have Tasks to complete, and it enables you to move quickly from one place to another. This avoids a lot of the tedious backtracking that you can find in these sort of games. It took me a number of hours to get from start to finish so it's terrific value for free!!

All in all, I'm absolutely delighted to find that it's being given away again as it was one that I lost when my previous computer crashed.
