Great game. I just finished it and only had to look at the walkthrough once. It reminds me of the old-school adventure games I used to play. Getting shot at by Mr. Smoozles all the time was pretty annoying though.

Nice 'review', anon. However, it gives me the impression that you are around 12 years old, which brings to doubt whether you were even around in the early 90s to have a computer at that time. If you were, you'd know that you would be lucky to have 4 Megs of ram back then, so I kind of doubt yours had 256. That is, unless your first computer was from this decade, of course.

Also, it's interesting that you complain about why this site can't give away a new game every day immediately after making fun of what they do offer. Why should a developer let people have their game for free when some anonymous poster is just going to give it a poorly written negative review? If you expect someone to continue to give you free things, then you should be grateful for what they present you with. If you really don't like a game, then at least try to provide a constuctive, balanced review detailing how they could improve it, to assist them with developing better titles in the future.

I didn't have a chance to get this game on the giveaway day, but just from looking over the screenshots I can tell that it doesn't look bad. I do get the impression that anon has a very narrow view of what makes for an enjoyable game though.

first of all, the fact that this got 65% thumbs up makes me lose faith not only in this site, but in humanity in general. this game is basically pacman meets doom (in the sense that in doom you find matching keys to doors), but has the entertainment value of spraying yourself in the face with mace.

it sucks.

if you think this game is at all entertaining, you're either very old, or very young. and probably in an age group that has no business being on the internet.

paying $10 for this game is like paying someone to kick you in the nuts.

It's worse, much worse, than the lamest flash game available for free on the internet.

And "whiterabbit" needs to get a life. You probably spent more time reviewing the damn game then they spent making it. I'd be willing to bet there's more text in your review than there is in the code for the game. (yes, i get the irony of saying that in a long post. but I dont do this EVERY GOD DAMN TIME this site releases a game)

Let's break down why this game sucks:

graphics: 1/10 the "comic strip" parts are nicely drawn. if you're a 6 year old and/or enjoy bright colors. perhaps someone with autism will enjoy this game, until a shinier, more enjoyable object (like a piece of tin foil?) distracts them. the rest of the game looks like the crappy pixelated sprites you'd expect on an NES.

sound: 1/10 hey, lets not include any enjoyable sound effects or voiceovers and just blast sh*tty music the whole time.

gameplay: 1/10 up. down. left. right. and an action button. im sorry is this 1980? Oh yeah you can use function keys to save and load. sweet. i hate using a pesky GUI to interact with programs. Now we have the convenience of a poorly made NES emulator.

whiterabbit posted technical specifications needed to run this game. Which one of you incompetent cavemen doesn't have the minimum requirements needed to run this POS? 256MB RAM and 64MB HD? my FIRST COMPUTER in the early 90's could do that. hell i think my phone can handle this game since it runs tetris nicely.

i downloaded this game only to be disappointed because it would never load... and i mean it NEVER loaded... i tried numerous times and no luck so i erased the game from my computer... anyone else have that issue? i wanted this game too.

More than a little repetitive, lots of going back and forth from area to area, but still a fun game. I like the dialogues between the various characters, actually LOL'd reading through some of them. Plus it's something different than anything else I've got installed right now. Thumbs up from me for this one. :)

I got three power cells from the robots in the village, and one from a cabinet where the first upgrade to the hand held thingy (such a technical term, isn't it?) for a total of four power cells. I used two in the two work benches, and the other two in the sewers to activate the switches. I need a fifth one for the big telescope, but I can't find another one anywhere. Help! :)

I loved it and played it out in like a day (I used a walktrough, cause I got stuck very quick and even with the walktrough it was quite a search for some things lol). I got a little annoyed though about Mr Smoozles himself (I end up calling him crazy cat or something) and the fact that you needed to go back and fort a lot but for the rest it was quite fun and I didn't had any problems with the game itself (the install and running the program) either

#8 (and others with stuttering applications) - The issue with many of the super slow "time lapse" openings is a problem with OpenGL. Many cards are complient with OpenGL 1.3, but will report to software that they support 1.4, 1.5 or even 2.0. In many cases, this does not cause a problem, but there are a number of titles that will take the card at it's word and try to enable all the OpenGL 2.0 features.

You can confirm this to be an issue by installing Google Earth, and then switching from DirectX to OpenGL. At least on the versions I've had in the past, zooming the world in on OpenGL was painfully slow, and DirectX was normal speed.

If this is the problem, then you have a few options.

1) Check for a setting called "Software-based OpenGL Support" and disable it.
2) Find a way to get the software to install/enable DirectX instead of OpenGL.
3) Try to update your video card driver and utility software.
4) Try to DOWNGRADE your video card driver...
5) Buy a new video card.

Yes, I wish I could reinstall windows... but this is a borrowed computer from the college where my MIL works and has it on a long-term loan (and we don't want to mess with all the college programs and settings loaded on here ;)).

Ah well, just in case anyone is wondering, I did reinstall the game twice and the loss of control doesn't seem to be happening as often or as severely as before. Maybe it's just my imagination though? Hope this cute game stays playable for us!

That will happen from time-to-time on older games when you change your hardware, Stephen - they just won't work right, (or at all).

I too have never had a game not install or run correctly from this site (and I see you being a nice guy to Freddie on #21 and blaming the games installer =o)

Personally, I only update my drivers if I'm having an issue (game crashing to desktop, etc). My computer is supposed to be defragging when idle too, but who knows how much and when? Vista doesn't show it like XP (and Disckeeper is the absolute *best* - wish I still had it!)

...and yes, Stephen, you are a wise man (one reason we value your reviews and opinions, and appreciate all the time you devote to us). "If it isn't running sweet, it's time to reinstall again" =o)

You're absolutely right Bill, I've only ever had problems with one game that I can recall and that was called Arcon Toys a great little arkanoid clone. I'd bought it a few years before it was given away on the giveaway project. Though since updating all my computers to dual core two years ago, I've never been able to get the game to work again. Otherwise all other games I've got from the giveaway project have worked. I have my hard drive defragging whenever the computer is idle, I update my drivers frequently, and every so often format my hard drives. The computers usually run sweet most of the time, and if they don't it's time to reinstall again. I buy all the games that I really like and back up those that are free standing (just in case I want to try them again at a future date.

Maybe transfer the activated game to another computer and see if it will work. I haven't tried yet, but I suspect this is a free standing game.

My, my there are a lot of sick computers out there. I know it's painful to back up and reinstall windows, but just DO IT! All the little "mini hassles" (and non-functionality of perfectly good GGOTD games) will just go away!

I don't know why I continually give such weight to others issues and have this resultant trepidation to try the games here.

The game unzipped, installed, and ran virtually flawlessly on Vista Home Premium. I did have to right-click and drag the program icon in C:\games\MrSmoozlesGoesNutso (right where it was supposed to be) to make a shortcut on my desktop (no big deal). When I launched the game the status bar didn't do anything for maybe 10-15 secs (no big deal), then flowed smoothly and the program opened and did what it was supposed to when it was supposed to do it. I thought the graphics are very good. Definate keeper, and I don't keep many! Enjoy!

I also have the problem where the game is running 100% fine, and then all of a sudden there is a delay in controlling Ed. Sometimes if I save the game right there and load it again (sometimes several times) I will have control again. Sometimes I have to exit the game in order to regain control. This seems to happen completely randomly.

Has anyone else resolved this problem with a reinstall or any of the other methods suggested by Whiterabbit? I would rather not lose my game progress if reinstalling won't fix things. I have Windows XP, loaded on my 750G hard drive with 1.5G RAM.

There's actually several available, all costing only a few dollars each, but Gametap are actually giving one away for free (thanks for reminding me of this site Swan :) It's called American McGee's Grimm: A Boy Learns What Fear Is

You can also play it as a browser game to see if you think it's worth downloading first. It is 193Mb in size. I nearly bought some recently, but thought I'd wait until they finish releasing the whole story set and hopefully release it as a single package. This is just one of 24 episodes. It is not recommended for children even though each episode is based on a story by the Grimm Brothers, all of which were written for children. The developer has with artistic licence tr=urned the story into something you wouldn't want your children seeing. Still, if the game is safe from children I'd highly recommend checking it out. Further episodes will cost just under $4 each.

Installed in like 2 seconds. At first I got a screen that said the game wasn't responding but I waited a sec and it loaded. This one's going to be a favorite for a while....I can tell.

Downloaded and ran fine on XP....

Mine came up with a tiny window, then went directly to full screen mode!
It did try to load the game to my Bagh Chal folder, so be careful when you install!
I had no problem with the game being slow, in fact I found it to be a little to quick, lol.....got to get used to using the keyboard again!

Nice game, but it seems a bit buggy sometimes..

Was anyone actually able to pick up the stack of Geek Magazine off of the bedstand? It wouldn't respond when I pressed "Y"

Crappy install method, takes minutes to load, then go's thru some kind of loop at the splash screen, could not even play. What a pile.

When you say you have way more memory, how much is way more?

Vista uses a lot of memory to run and if you have lots of background programs running as well (you're likely to if you install a lot of the giveaway applications), then you may not have as much memory as you thought.

Personally, I have no problems running this game, but I always ensure my hard drive is always defragged (I used diskeeper that keeps it so), I update my drivers regularly and I usually turn off most background processes if I'm playing games. I have 4Gb of memory, which is about average for most newish computers today and ample to run quite a lot of background processes. But I close them down through habit when I only had a small amount of memory several years ago.

You can configure different profiles so that if you're using your computer for specific tasks you can have the appropriate programs running in the background and then make best use of your system resources.

I used to play a particular game that required a lot of resources. I found that by turning off all unnecessary programs I could increase the number of bots I was fighting from around 40 to 50 to around 80 bots; which in battlefield 2 made a big difference to the games I played.

For those having problems getting this game to work, or it's not to your taste then pop over to Alawar and download the Alawar Game box as there's a new game available called Treasure Mole: Winter Vacations, a Bomberman clone, or go to Gamehouse and get today's free arcade game. It's on it's second round of repeats, but if you've not been watching the forums you can get around 40 to 50 games over the next several weeks, thought they are all add supported (adds are around 20 seconds in length and crop up every few to several levels depending upon the game. Today’s game is called Spirit of Wandering: The Legend, a hidden Objects adventure game. Also Big Fish have a couple of Free Games to download as well, but you'll need to go to the forums and find both threads and follow the links to get them. They are called Mystery Case Files - Madame Fate another hidden objects game and Build-a-lot a time management game. Neither of these is add supported, but you will have to play them via the Big fish games manager.

downloaded and installed quite quickly.
Takes for ever to load the game.
even though I have way more memory and my processor is much faster than recommended, it still runs slow and a delay from when you push a key till you actually get the movement you need.

I had to delete it.

Hi Ileane, all I can suggest is that you re-download the game and try installing it again. Remember to watch where the file is being installed to. the game is touted as being Vista compatible.

I hope you get it sorted soon.

Downloaded Mr Snoozle and unzipped and followed all directions give will not open up it says errors downloading. I have Vista so wondering if these games are not for vista??? Downloaded Hope Springs Eternal (took a couple hours) got it activated about 3 times but would not install so I could pay it either so I am not very happy with GOTD games lately. I use to be able to download and play them easily but now getting them to install correctly has become a very big problem. Not a Happy Camper as far as the recent games given out.
