I was unabloe to play. Mousecursor stuck every time I start the game. Not able to start.

If this is played with keyboard only, integrate the keyboard in the selection menue.

It installed but would not start successfully. I tried compatibility modes like for XP, still no dice. Had to uninstall it after several failures. I have Windows 7 64 bits, IE8, AVG. It looked like it was
going to be fun.

Okay, I am not exactly sure what all the fuss is about with the wrapper. I have pretty sensitive AV software and I have no problems installing, nor do I get odd messages from my 'puter. I have been using these machines since the Kaypro IV in the early 80's and have never had a virus or bit of malware on my computers so its not that I am careless. I must agree however that installing stuff in safe mode may not be a recommended best practice and understand why folks may not want to do this.

As for today's game. It downloaded and installed with no problems. After the install and activation I got the splash screen and instruction screen, back to the opening splash and when I clicked on start game nothing happened. However when I restarted the game using the shortcut from my desk top it worked perfectly well.

To the developers: while I most likely will not keep this game as I never cared for PacMan all that much, I did love Donkey Kong and would hate to see you not go ahead with the game due to the negative comments on this site today. Also loved Galalga (sp?) and have never found one that played or looked very good on a pc or laptop. As for the price, perhaps $10 is a little steep considering all over performance of today's game although you might get some bites from younger folks (6yrs to 12yrs) at a 1.99 to 2.99 price range. Older folks are just too game savvy for this one to have much appeal, especially at ten bucks a pop. Suggest you either beef up the game play or lower the price. JMHO

Am broke old cab driver using an 8 yr old Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop running XP Home SP3, 32Bit, 2.2 Gig processor, 702 Ram, graphics - only 64MB but I had no graphic display problems with this game as I have had with others. For instance the Fishdom we had the other week, the tanks are blocks floating around with fish inside and tank stuff is weird looking but the game boards work perfectly fine and BTW have out of just plain stubbornness gotten to over 200 game levels (all tanks long ago were gold cups). Am still messing with it wanting to see just how high it will go and how much cash can be accrued, over $300,000+ right now. LOL.

Just thought I would put my two cents into the fray! I know its late but just got in after being gone for a week and a 16 hour drive home.

Installed ok. Upon launch, in said loading and I had the Morbid Mansion splash screen with the loading bar. Then black screen with hourglass spinning. Still black screen after a while. I used task manager to kill the process. Tried again. Same results. Windows 7, 32 bit. First time I've encountered this issue with any giveaway.

As many other games in this side, this program also does have malicious behavior. More Anti-Malware considers this game as a threat and the game doesn´t play without that pest. With a good firewall turned on to lock all ports Morbid Mansion can´t start to play! -Unfortunately more Anti-Malware can´t quarantine that kind of threat. Furthermore, the security program notifies that your IP-protection is turned off by the threat!

Thanks for all the responses on Morbid Mansion. I am one of the developers and it has been an eye-opener experience on this great website that does these offers.

A little background: We are a horror-themed website of the ages 30 and up. We are people that use to sink countless hours at arcades throwing in quarter after quarter into the machines.

You may of stopped us in our tracks on our current developments with throwback classic upgrades with twists on Space Invaders and Donkey Kong. Yes they are modernized as with Pac-Man and Morbid Mansion but if people don't enjoy them then maybe we should stifle that development.

We appreciate all of the candid responses and the suggestions mentioned.

Thanks for trying Morbid Mansion!

Thanks for stopping by. It's always nice to see the developer of the game that's being given away. it's just unfortunate that the new wrapper has caused problems with installing game giveaways over the last few weeks for some members. I can see why the security has been increased as there has been some abuse over the years by some community members.

I never used to like Pacman games but throughly enjoyed this game. To improve on the overall experience consider adding some mini games. :)

When starting your computer press F8 during the boot up sequence; (you usually get a note at the bottom of the screen telling you what key to press). That will open up a menu that enables you to open the computer in Safe mode. You can read more about it by Googling it. :)

Stephen, I've said before you are one of the best things on this website! You put so much effort into it and remain friendly, despite the occasional rude post.

Although I have successfully installed one item with Themida protection, I am now very reluctant to install anything from here. I appreciate you saying we should post our concerns, but there really is no point anymore. Many of my later posts are deleted if they are seen in any way critical of anything. I do not post inflammatory remarks, or criticisms of others, but just general comments along the lines of do not trust so many negative votes today, or reporting suspicious voting. My comments have been constructive and supportive, even urging others to ignore negative votes as it is good software.

They do not go through, do not pass moderation...So why should I spend my important time trying to help when GAOTD will not let comments about suspicious voting go through? Only the very occasional one by someone else ever seems to make it, even thought the voting appears sometimes blatant. Well that stopped me commenting and now Themida is the final straw for me. The software offered here is just not worth the risk of Themida and the hassle anymore and I believe I can see what will happen. They have lost me now also. You have been so much help and knowledge and ultimately, you are the only thing I shall miss from these sites.

Good luck!

Couldn't get it to install normally and I'm sorry GAOTD but "installing in safe Mode" is simply unacceptable. you should NEVER install in safe mode in Vista or Win 7 because it completely shuts down ALL protections the OS has to vital system files. Frankly it doesn't matter how many times you scan it, that's not the problem, the problem is you have just left a machine wide open with no way to protect its vital subsystems, go to any security forum and ask them if they think safe mode is acceptable and you'll be laughed right off the forum.

Please please PLEASE go back to the old system, we'll happily take the online activation! I bet many would agree with me that having an online activation is a small price to pay compared to risking the stability and security of our systems. I used to recommend GAOTD all over the net and have bought several pieces of software thanks to trying them here first, but as long as this new wrapper is in place I can no longer do so in good conscience.

As far as the actual games goes (in case it helps anyone), installation does no more, no less than the WinRAR method we usually see with GOTD games -- game files are expanded into the program's folder, though by default this time not into a C:\Games folder. Morbid Mansion does ask for Internet Access, it uses your systems MIDI playback capabilities & files, & according to Sysinternals Process Explorer, it opened several audio decoders along with win7's "Print driver host for 32 bit applications" [splwow64.exe]. As with many [most?] of these games it uses D3D.

A game I'm sure Elvira Mistress Of The Dark would approve of (or not) Game is not half bad considering its of the arcade variety. Music / Audio effects could be better however.

Might be kid friendly if they toned down the overall theme / naming of the game.

OK, the nephew is a bit of a Pacman nut... So I did a quick test on a "disposable" XP system to see how intrusive the install is (since I can't do a test in a virtual system anymore).

A quick test shows though the game plays OK and is a good diverson, but the most obvious problem I would have to point out is that the low-contrast colour selection (though it matches the horror theme), is very hard to see on some LCD screens in moderate sunlight. Amanda seems to have pointed out the other major beefs.

It would seem that this is a "gateway" game to an online horror website. Though I don't think that this gateway approach is very effective (most of my horror fan buddies wouldn't be caught dead playing Pacman - they'd even prefer solitare over Pacman).

But the registration program in the program directory shows that this game is not actually registered. So, is this going to be a surprise time-limited registration? If the developer is watching this site today, could this be confirmed?

@Stephen, this comment is meant just for you. Only when you feel like sharing it with the visitors, that is alright with me. Actually I would welcome that, but this is the games section, so I do understand this comment does not belong here. I'm not able to post it elsewhere though and I do like to react on your suggestion to install in save mode. I know you will have read it, when "waiting for moderation" disappears.

Alternatively, you could cut this comment from here ;)

Save mode makes Windows start with the bare essentials. It is even more drastic then just only disable your AV-scanner. I do understand that in save mode it makes it more probable there is less in the way to collide with Themida. So yes, many people would feel this being a solution.

But like I stated in #8 "..disabling my AV-scanner (this should not be a requirement..". Like I said, installing in save mode is even more drastic and is not a sustainable long term solution.

Like you I do believe the giveaway team take great care. But the team could be blinded by Themida aswell.

Like you know, Themida hides code for prying eyes. This is intended for protection against piracy. But Themida is also used to hide malicious code.

The giveaway team will not be able to see what is inside. They can see the developper used Themida, but GOTD should not allow that because they can take all the care they want, but just have to gamble that it'll be save. The team will have to exclusively use Themida and could not allow developers to do that.

A typical visitor wants to control security not just trust GOTD. As I showed, it will be difficult to have that trust because GOTD cannot be sure what is inside Themida when used by the developer. More of a problem will be a visotir cannot trust himself anymore because he cannot see behind Themida aswell.

So GOTD might eventually solve all the problems (which I very much doubt. Scanner companies will not 'white list' Themida just because GOTD likes that) but the use of Themida will always make things less secure (becaues nobody can be sure anymore).

The best way is improving the wrapper and do it without using Themida.
I cannot trust the future with Themida inspite of the outstanding trackrecord from GOTD. Save Mode installation cannot be a long term solution if any solution at all. I do want to trust my own security measures and I don't feel waiting for the soltion GOTD is going after will be worth waiting for.

I know, this sounds harsh, but to me this is real enough.

Thanks Stephen, I will continue reading of course.

hi ALF, the game is tested before Themida is added to the wrapper. The wrapper is only added once the game has been thoroughly tested for malware. I understand what you are saying about Themida being able to hide malicious code, but in this case it does not apply. :0

Hi,

Sorry to read other sad comments about Themidia and the troubles some have. Well, I've not had a chance to D/L any game since you use this new wrapper. So I have no idea how it would "behave" on my computer.

Anyway, I just wanted to drop a note to say that I am glad to see there's a give-away today :) Was kind of sad that there was nothing last weekend. But then, good for you WR, as you surely had a more relaxed weekend :) You deserve it, after all !

Like many others, though I do not download all available games, I like, every Saturdays and Sundays, to come by and see what's given away. So thank you WR and GGAOTD for all your efforts, and for bringing us 100% free games, as often as you can.

This time again, I won't download the game. Not too much my taste. But it's OK ! I'll check again tomorrow ;)

Thumbs down from me. Every single time i try to start the game after it loads i get a message saying error while loading game. Then it shuts down. I did this 6 times and finally uninstalled the game. Sorry not for me too much trouble. If something starts bad for me i don`t want it since most likely that means i will have ongoing problems.

I don't want to be nasty ... but ... a Pacman clone ... with cliparts-like visuals ... in 2012 ... and ... and for 10 bucks ? Are you kiding ? So, ok, it's playable ... but enjoyable not.
The indie game scene has more to offer, even for free.

Downloaded/installed fine on Vista 64-bit.

Seems like a pretty simple game. Simple graphics, simple sound effects, got a few more power-ups than Pacman but is otherwise the same game.

Normal mode is very slow. Hard and frantic are better, but neither hard nor frantic. The only thing that made it difficult was the maze issues. It really needs more variation, though I don't know what to suggest.

For several of the mazes, there were too many long "halls" with nowhere to turn to get out of them. The occasional one is fine and even preferred, but there was one map where almost the whole thing was all long halls and other long paths with only one entrance and exit. Too easy to get stuck in them and killed.

I really like the online score thing, it's nice to see how others do and to post my own score. I didn't research the people who made it, but I wonder how long they'll keep the site going...

Two spelling errors on the instructions page, where they should have used "their" instead of "there".

Overall, it's pretty unremarkable. There's nothing that stands out, the gameplay is really bland, it looks very plain. If this is the first game someone made, it's a good start. If it's anything more than someone's class assignment, they're going to need to put A LOT more effort into it.

It was worth trying out for free on a weekend morning, but I wouldn't pay $10 for it. Not sure I'd pay anything for it.

If you like Pacman, you might try this free anti-Pacman flash game, I think it's a lot of fun.

Hello,
Programm doesnot work on Windows 7 32 bit.

.........................Moderator Comment........................

Works on my Win 7 4 bit. Maybe it's the same problem many are having w.r.t. the Themidia security measures that have been added to the wrapper. Please post your comment over in the appropriate blog post. The more users that post in complaint, the more likely they may decide to drop the protection.

They decided to include the protection because it was very easy to get an executable via the temp folder that you could then install anytime you wished. There were You Tube videos showing you what to do and even software to automate the install and registration process. That will probably have put many developers off giving games and software away. With the new security you can no longer install the executable from the temp file and all those You tube videos are now defunct. :)

I would have loved to try this new here game.
I regret to say I only come bye to say a quick goodbye now.
There is nothing I could possibly say about this game.
Stephen, I do hope you will allow me my last post.

Since the new wrapper I'm geting all kind of troubles, more then once not being able to install at all. Plenty of Memory Errors, incomplete installations, unable to start the new installation. All of this only after waiting for ever activating and disabling my AV-scanner (this should not be a requirement but when I don't, the AV will stop everything dead in in it's tracks). Even after improvements and adjustments of the wrapper several times.

My comments (polite and to the point) are not passing moderation @ http://blog.giveawayoftheday.com/gotd-wrapper-is-updated/
even when they ask for input. I suppose some comments are treated more equal then others over there.

I must say, it really p*sses me off. I know not everyone has these problems I suffer, but I also know nobody is save with this wrapper. Perhapse GOTD will only focus on people without problems and who are careless about there safety or with those who have complete trust in GOTD and all they will do in the future.

Improving the wrapper is a good idea (after some time GOTD simply has to), but there is no reason to use Themida at all like they seem to suggest.

All kind of malware might hide behind Themida even if it is not permanetly installed. My AV-scanner cannot see if it is just GOTD-stuff or conceiled malware. Themida should never be allowed to pass your (any) scanner. The wrapper is a risc itself now during installation of a (G)GOTD.

GOTD might check thoroughly and might have done so succesfully in the past, but this is not enough guarantee for the future for me (there is always a first time and I like to play it save rather then being sorry). GOTD cannot scan inside a Themida protected code when the developpers might use it themselves.

Goodbye, my time hanging around at GOTD and GGOTD is over now. I had a great time and I will still have, but it will be somewhere else in the universe of the internet. Live long and prosper.

Stephen, thanks for all you did. May good health be your part as much as possible.

I really don't know what's going on? Others have said the same w.r.t. comments disappearing. I'm sorry to see you go as I always though your reviews were well constructed and to the point as well. Did you read my suggestion over in the forums (and in reply to a comment two weeks ago) regarding installing the games in Safe Mode. It was confirmed last week that it will work.

Once installed the game is as all giveaways. I know it's not recommended to do that, but i do believe the giveaway team take great care not to allow any game through with malware; using several well known anti-malware programs, so the games you install in Safe mode should be very safe. Once installed just restart to boot up as normal.

I've been missing the games - what happened mods?

If there's one game I really don't enjoy, it's Pacman - of any kind, so I'll pass thank you.

WhiteWabbit my friend, ;) thank you so much for all the work you put into your reviews - makes me wish that someone would do the same thing for the straight software on GaotD.

I'd do it again myself, but I don't have as much time as I used to have, which is why I closed down my software review web site some time ago. Even my journalism takes a back seat these days. :(

Guess I'll wait for the next offer, hopefully it will be tomorrow! :)

Unable to install; the GAOTD wrapper comes up, says it's connecting to giveawayoftheday.com, then goes to the "Successfully activated" message without apparently doing anything in between.

Watching a task manager while it's doing this shows that it is launching the usual we*.tmp file, but that executable is just immediately exiting.

I can't tell if it's yet another problem with the wrapper or a broken installer.

(My bet is on the wrapper, but the previous problems I've had with the wrapper have consistently resulted in error messages; this behavior is new.)

...........................Moderator Comment............................

Although not recommended with all problem software you can bypass your computers protection by installing the game in Safe Mode. Once installed the game should them work as the Themidia security only involves the wrapper. Mike says that it's definitely not recommended if you are using Vista. There's a thread over in the forums where you can read some of the arguments against doing this. The main one is that if the game had a virus it would then install to your computer; but, as I've said countless times the giveaway team thoroughly check all games using several premium anti-malware programs to ensure users get a safe download, so installing in safe mode (with networking) should be safe.

I didn't even bother downloading this not because it's a Pac-man clone (which I may add should be classified as misleading.)
After looking at the screenshots of the game the info should say Atari 2600 Pac-man clone because that's what it immediately reminded me of.
I hated the Atari Version and whoever is this company that makes this game thought it would be a good idea to resurrect one of the worst games on the 2600 should be put in front of a firing squad!

P.S. Please dont resurrect the Atari 2600 game E.T. since it seems as though your going down that path!

Developers Introduction:

The Game:

Horror Palace have given us a Pac Man clone done in a Halloween/Horror theme. The game is straightforwards. Collect all of the bones in the maze without beigng caufgt by the stylized ghosts. If you do cross the path of a ghost you lose one of your three lives. You can see how many lives you have via the small panel to the bottom left of the playing arena. There are power ups to collect that can enhance your game play for example a speed up token, a life token (you need three to get a new life) as well as spiders that scare away the ghosts plus score multipliers and more.

You'll find a link to the help section (that details all the power ups and multipliers) on the main menu as well as a button to select difficulty a link to the developers web site a toggle for full screen to windowed and back as well as the play and continue buttons. There's also a link to a podcast via a RSS feed and news from the developers site.

There's not much else to say.

Conclusion:

Not much I can say about the game apart from it's a typical Pacman clone with a horror theme. Game play is as expected. ind load times were a little slow, but apart from that there were no problems. The graphics are a little retro, but hey graphics are not that important with a game like this. I'd give it a decent 7 out of 10 for playability and replayability.
