To moo (#31): you're welcome! Obviously the settings were SOMEwhere, and I just had to find them. Now I've played the game, more HTM files appear in the same folder, storing highscore table, progress through games, etc. So the REALLY sad can put themselves top of every high score table in the game!

To everyone who slagged I.L.K. off as a 'kid's game:' Gee, I guess you only ever play those horrible violent multiplayer shoot-em-ups that I personally cannot STAND? Or games that require the reactions of a fighter pilot? Or those (*I* think they're daft) 'three-in-a-row' games? Not EVERYone likes the same sorts of games. This 52-year-old finds I.L.K. quite challenging enough: there are several of the mini-games that I may never ever complete (like grab the ball of wool—I just CANNOT grab the ball even if I make it over the hurdles!). Nor everyone is part of the 'Doom generation:' some of us were too busy WRITING programs for a living to have the time to waste to become a hair-trigger-duck-and-dive expert! Plus, I just don't like 'killing' games, unless you're killing something worthwhile like pigeons or foxes :D …!

To those bemoaning 'repeats:' Some of the other commenters clearly valued the extra chance to 'grab' I.L.K.; and remember that there is such a thing as New Visitors to GOTD and GGOTD ;)! GGOTD naturally depends on game developers 'donating' games: if for whatever reason, that isn't happening as often as it used to, what do you suggest GGOTD does about it? Arrange 'visits' to all games developers from tall, heavy guys with 'violin cases' and sunglasses? Clearly, last May GGOTD hoped the 'lull' in contributions was temporary; and equally clearly, it wasn't.

So to come back on topic :), yes I enjoyed ILK and I will no doubt continue to find it challenging for some time to come.

Total shame. Just a total, total, shame. I can not for the life of me understand why ??? We were all told back in May of 2008 that the games were going to weekends TEMPORARY. Hello!! temporary means a short time as in maybe, a couple weeks to maybe, and this would be a huge stretch. 2 months at best.
To add further insult to everyone here, we keep getting childrens games and repeat after repeat after repeat after repeat......and on and on it seems to go. SADLY.
Hell, with all the repeats we keep on getting, yous may as well go back to daily repeat giveaways.
It was my understanding waaaayyyyyyy back in May of 08 yous were going weekends only temporary and we would also see new content. Ware did the new stuff go ? did I miss it ? Nah!! like a damn fool I keep coming back week after week only like most everyone else here, Disappointed sadly.
Come on guys, pick up the pace over on this side a little. At least show some type of effort on your part.
Very disappointed in you guys as of late. :(

>#19, Cad... THANK YOU! for finding that illusive little file that gets rid of that horrible chalkboard grating voice. MwwwA! to you. I also got rid of the voice on the dog one. Of course there's no instructions now (and you could barely understand them before), but easy enough to figure out. Cheers!

and >#15, Stephan... may a big cat gobble you up some day and blissfully clean it's whiskers in the sun. :D

THANK YOU! My grand is gonna LOVE THIS! Missed it before, & was so upset at myself! GOTD bandwidth is being clogged a LOT by downloaders & when trying to install & activate, it took a bit over 2 hours to get activated & start install. Then it activated again at the end of install, which is strange. :) I'm assuming everyone & their cat is trying to get and activate the game! :)
KUDOS for getting us this game, GOTD!
Huge thanks to Tri-Synergy for this! You rock! :)

I have to agree with GPC11. Considering the game giveaway is only twice a week, we shouldn't be seeing the number of repeats we have been seeing.

Perhaps every two weeks, offer one repeat out of the four. And the repeat will have to meet a specific criteria; say perhaps at least a 70% thumbs up when it was first posted.

Just to reiterate what many have said before me: If you're above the age of 10 and have no kids this game is not for you.

My girls love this game and its partner game, I Love Puppies, as does my five-year-old son.

It's a cute game for younger players. For exactly what it is, I give it a thumbs up.

THUMBS DOWN. Not because this is a bad game. Read the comments above to find out if you would enjoy this offering. I vote thumbs down simply because this is a repeat. Or is it a tripeat? I'm not sure. But I am sure about one thing. This side needs to seriously consider getting something new to offer us. The games went from daily to weekend only. One would assume that only offering downloads on the weekend would allow for some great bew games. Sadly that is not the case. Even weekend only, all we have seen are repeats. It seems the game side has peaked and sunk. I guess their fate it to be stuck in a never ending cycle of repeats.

I agree with the other comments - file size is huge and the voice is extremely annoying.

I downloaded "I love Kittens" free game for Saturday, Dec. 6, at 12:08 pm (noon) Eastern time, and immediately tried to insall it; however, I got the message that the time for this game had expired - what's up with that? I just told a LOT of people about this game today, too, on another web site, tellng them to come here - and now I can't get it when it's advertised? on the same day it's offered? Why is it being offered if we can't install it? And what do I tell others?

Many users have commented on how irritating the (obviously adult) 'little girl' voice is, and how the in-game Settings will not allow you to turn this off completely.

SO… I did a little digging around. No INI file or similar. No Registry entries. Where on earth was the game saving its settings? Finally, a simple Search for files 'modified today' turned up the answer, and (drum roll, please!) YES YOU CAN turn off the voice completely!

Two things to say before we continue:

1) Although I've tested this here with no ill effects, this is definitely a HACK and therefore if you wish to do this, you do so AT YOUR OWN RISK.

2) The file you need to modify (using Notepad) is in a Hidden folder. You may need to modify your PC's Explorer settings to 'see' Hidden files and folders. To do this in XP, open an Explorer window and click Tools, Folder Options…, View tab; then select Show hidden files and folders; then click Apply; then click OK.

HOW TO (REALLY!) KILL OFF THE SPEECH:

1) Open this folder in Explorer, replacing USERNAME with your Window login name:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\cerasus.media\CatGames

2) In this folder is the single file Project.htm. Make a COPY of this file IMMEDIATELY as a backup, in case anything goes wrong.

3) RIGHT-click Project.htm, then click Open with, Notepad.

4) Click Format and make sure Word Wrap is NOT ticked.

5) At roughly position 75 of the top line, you will see: speech=10 (or some other number from 10 to 100). Change the number after the = sign to 0 and click File, Save.

6) Close Notepad.

Now start "I Love Kittens" and VOILA! NO IRRITATING VOICE!
Of course, you will now have to remember to click the X button twice to exit, and what to do in each mini-game, but at least you won't have to suffer THAT voice any more!

PS: To those who want GGOTD: have you checked in the Forums for the 'Weekdays' Game Giveaways? These are available for FIVE days each.

I will be downloading this for a neighbour. They have 6 kids of which 5 are able to play and they all loved the puppy one. thanks its nice to have decent games for children.

I lost ingenious so I am hoping that one will be repeated. I think that its not all bad to repeat games so that those who are new or have lost them can once again get them back. perhaps you could do repeats during the week and have new ones on the weekend?

some games I would like to see is virtual villagers, aveyond and westward.

Like I love Puppies, this would probably be a fun game for young children. Unfortunately, I found it boring and the voice got on my nerves immediately. As others have mentioned, it's a large download for what you get. Just the same, thanks for bringing us the free games GGOTD. :D

File size doesn't bother me if the game is something that interests me. Being an animal lover, (you have to be when your wife works for a veterianian ;-) ), I checked this out last time it was offered. It might be something for children to enjoy, but I don't have any young ones home, and grands are a few years away. Not something I want to leave on my hard drive for years, waiting for kids to enjoy it.

I downloaded this the last time it was offered, and wasn't impressed. It's a very large download for what you get. I expected skill progression, earning more kittens, or something of the sort. Instead, you get a bunch of mini-games that simply track whether or not you've finished them.

The variety of game styles is nice, but the actual gameplay in each is very repetitive and the games aren't very responsive to the controls. For example, when jumping over rocks in the race, there is a noticeable lag between hitting jump and the kitten jumping.

I regret the time I lost waiting for that to download the first time, and don't recommend it.

I agree with Stephen... a very sweet game for a little girl/boy. Maybe they can understand the little girl impersonator narrator! Boy, can she get on the nerves really quick, and an option to turn the voice off would be grand. I do have this one from last giveaway... do the repeats seem to be getting closer and closer? but I guess we notice it more because it's only weekends now, so we tend to look forward to it more. But a cute game nonetheless, so thanks, GGAOTD, for offering it for those who missed it before.

This received a positive 61% of 472 votes the first time it was given away back in January of this year, and is very similar to a game we received here a few weeks ago called I love Puppies (apart from the characters and some slight changes to some of the games).

You can read all 122 comments about I love Kittens by following the link below, though comment #77 by Mapsking, #107 by Tilly Sue and # 115 by Flash River probably tell you all you need to know :

http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/i-love-kittens/#comments

This is a whopping 253Mb download that installs to 414Mb, so it may be a big problem for dial up users.

Introduction & Game info:

In I Love Kittens! all cat lovers can help precious kittens who need love and affection to be playful and happy. Just like a good mother cat, you can also teach them lessons they need to learn with fun and exciting kitten training programs.

This is definitely aimed at children (IMO), and therefore if you have children especially girls, this is a must have though I’m sure the boys will like it as well). I do think that it will require adult supervision though especially initially because there are a lot of instructions give throughout the game.

Once you have activated a user (by inputting your name) whenever you return to the game your name will be assigned to one of the four cats that you can choose from; The main menu has four categories, Training, Care, Fun and Games and Treasure Chest. Apart from the treasure chest each section contains at least six or more games. I counted 22 distinctly different games. Each one presented in the same way, with an introductory screen, and then once you first enter you will be given a commentary about the basic game play and the controls you need to use. These are usually a combination of both the keyboard and mouse, though the keyboard figures mostly. There are 8 kitten training programs. Hunt the Ball, Ball of Yarn, Tree Trunk Riding, Running Race, Through Field & Meadow and Balls of Yarn Game, as well as 6 great kitten exercises. Cat Grass, Catch the Kittens, Runaway Kitten, Creepy Crawlies, My Cat Hotel, Jump the River, Through the Flower Bed and The Beetle Invasion. Plus there are several games such as Hide & Seek, Kite Flying, Jungle Adventure, Neighbor's Garden, Cat Picture Hunt, Catch the Ball of Yarn, Seesaw Game and Treats for Kitty.

The treasure chest contains some surprises that you have to earn by playing the games from the other three sections.

Each game has it’s own high score. When you attain a score that is high enough to go on the score board a ribbon appears on the games selection screen over that particular game. You can see what I mean by checking out the screen captures I’ve taken.

I started taking screen captures of each game, but decided to stop once I reach about 40 screen captures. I also considered creating a file for users to download, but the last time I did that, there were only a few downloads. The effort therefore isn’t rally worth it (I apologize to those few who would have found a use for such a file)

The games use a combination of the keyboard and the mouse, though it seemed to me that the keyboard figured far more than the mouse. I’m sure the kids will pick up the different controls though as despite each game having slightly different combinations of keys and mouse usage, there are only certain keys used when you look at the game in it’s entirety.

You can access the game settings from the cog like symbol found in the lower left of the screen. Here you will find sliders to control the voice of the instructress, the music and the sound effects as well as a toggle for switching to windowed mode.

Screen Captures:

As a Slideshow:

http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/I%20love%20kittens/?albumview=slideshow

System Requirements:

• Windows 98/SE/ME/2000/XP/Vista
• Athlon Processor/Pentium III Processor with 1 GHz
• 128 MB RAM
• 64 MB Video Card
• Sound Card

If your computer doesn’t have a graphics card, it may still have a graphics chip on the motherboard, however unless you have a fairly new computer the chip may not support the amount of memory you need. If you aren’t sure you can find out by going top the start menu and clicking on the run command and entering dxdiag (it’s not case sensitive) then click on okay. The DX Diagnostics window will pop up. Click on the Display tab and you should be able to discover what your graphics card or onboard chip supports (look in the device section where it says Approx. total memory)

Conclusion:

Wow, what a lot you get with this game. Despite it obviously being aimed at a specific market, I found some of the games quite entertaining myself. I know my daughter will love this. It’s different enough from the two other cat games she has (Catz; both on PC and the Nintendo DS plus Splat the Cat for PC) to make it a worthwhile keeper. I think, speaking for my daughter this is worth 9 out of 10, though for an adult it would probably be worth much less, at around 6 out of 10.

The graphics are well done and the in game help is excellent. It’s always available by clicking on the question mark :?: to the bottom right of the playing area and can be turned off immediately by clicking on the Esc key. The only negative thing I can really say about this game and many community members echoed the same thing the last time it was given away is the girl’s voice, which becomes very annoying very quickly.

Thank you very much Try-Synergy and the Game Giveaway team for a wonderful game.
