Game is fun and I have never had an issue with any of the games from Playrix before, but..... I have played this one multiple times and at some point (and it is never the same point in the game) it will no longer load so I have to start a new user name to play again and have to start from the beginning again. Have tried playing this since it was released almost 3 weeks ago and have had to start a new user / player for the game a total of 8 times now. Getting really frustrating to have to keep starting with a new user/player so many times. Going to just uninstall it.

......................................Moderator Comment...............................

Sorry to hear you are having problems. I deleted the game shortly after the giveaway ended a si have a lot of mahjong games that are much better than Mahjong secrets, so can't really help with this problem. Sorry.

Thank you for the game but I am also having a problem proceeding. I got to the 5th padlock and it would not continue. I am in the process of repeat the game under a new name and will post if that also stops me at that place. otherwise, it's a nice little game.

I downloaded the game and only got part way through the game and it prevented me from going any farther. It appears the rest of the game is locked. Did you offer the trial version and not the full version, because it appears that way when I played the game. I have never had this type of problem before in the games that you offered.

I am up to the part where I have to place the flowers and they don't seem to fit anywhere. Any ideas or is there a site I can go to perhaps?

Very cool! I have only played a few levels but I really enjoy it. The story line is a bit hokey but the music is ok and hasn't cheeped into my head...yet. I am happy to see Mahjong game. Thanks!

Like the comment no 11 my computer kept freezing halfway through the game in the previous install and I had to start a new profile each time to get it to play so of course never got to the end. Have put this onto a USB stick to try again, cross fingers!!

I had the exact same problem. I couldn't get past that spot. I'll download this and try it again as I was enjoying the game and was very disappointed with the bug.

You may be on High DPI -- set the properties flag (under Compatibility) to ignore the high DPI scaling. It should help.

Rafal, try this site: http://www.mahjongready.com/Games/show/Real_Mahjong_1.htm, where you'll find a plethora of 'real mahjongg' games, many of which are playable online with no downloads needed.

You can also try this site:
http://mahjongtime.com/mahjong.html if you want to learn more about the real game. Technically not a board game because there is no board: just a flat surface, tiles, and possibly money or 'gambling chips!'

I hope that information is of use to you and to none or more of my other fellow GGOTD users.

Hi Stephen,
I had downloaded this game last time and was enjoying playing it for a while. However, when I went back to it later, I had a problem - the game seemed to have disappeared (if I remember correctly). Today I tried three times to download it - each time when it started up the screen was blank (black) even though there was sound. I found I could minimize the screen and when I brought it back up, the initial screen came up, but the cursor was frozen. Also, it already had my name, which means that the computer located the game from the previous download even though I have tried to delete all evidence of it. If my husband were still alive, he could probably figure it out, but I have no idea how to fix it. So I am disappointed that I can't get this game to work.
Cara in NC

..................................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Cara, sorry I'm so late in moderating, fell asleep watching a movie early this evening. It's now after 3am. Have you checked the FAQ's section over in the game discussion forums? I've linked to it in my review (see comment 1). It could be a conflict with other programs running in the background or it may be a combination of things such as screen resolution. some games won't work on all resolutions. Try playing the game again, then straight away open up the event viewer (just type Event Viewer in the search field), then look through the recent logs to see if it has recored any error messages related to the game. If none of the above, or other suggestions in the FAQ's thread don't help. Try posting the issue in the game discussion forums. Sorry I can't be of more help at this time.

The scores and profile you had previously will have been written to the registry. when you reinstalled the game the paths would have been reopened. You can get rid of it by searching through the registry, but it can be tedious; especially if you don't know exactly what to look for. If you did start to mess with the registry, it's a good idea to make a back up first, just in case.....

Another thing you could try is to download Razers Game Booster. That turns off uneeded background programs and may, (if a program is causing the problem)

After installing, the player's name defaulted to the one used in a previous Plarix game. When I tried to play the game, it froze with the opening screen. Checked Direct X, tried re-install, etc. When I changed the default name that the game had automatically entered for me, the game then worked. So if this game freezes on the opening screen, try changing the name.

..................................Moderator Comment.............................

Unless you reinstalled the operating system, unless you used a special program to remove the game previously, the profile and scores will hhave been recorded in the registry. :)

I downloaded this last time, and got about 15 steps in on the map. Then the map froze, as someone else with win 7 64 mentioned. Didn't matter if I was playing under admin or other user acct. Just couldn't get it restarted. The problem listed it as "game paused". Don't know why. I started a new game with a new player, but if this happens again, I will delete- it is rather an annoying game. Do you think this download, from a different source, would have the same freeze problem?

..................................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Glenrd, I don't know? There may be a conflict with something you are running in the background.

I'm one of the people who liked this game but it has a fatal flaw for some users. I have tried repeatedly to play past the first few chapters but the game will not let me move onto chapter 4 (over the bridge - your 8th jpg) on the progression screen. I also get a hardware acceleration popup warning. Turning off hardware acceleration makes no difference. I can not move on in the game.

For a month after installing this game the last time it was given away I would use the 'free play' option just to waste time if I was waiting on a computer process in the background. Yes, the play is simplistic but much more satisfying than Mahjong games that serve up non-winnable combinations with only one shuffle available.

My opinion of the game is that it is perfect for families with children to introduce them to mahjong and HOGs. Beautiful graphics and it interested me.

..................................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Nan Grif, post the problem in the forums. It's late in the giveaway and most community members have been and gone. You're more likely to get a response from someone who may know a fix by posting in the game discussion forums.

When running it in Windows 10 Build 10074, the game minimizes and the Windows menu opens. I tried running it with admin mode and XP compatibility but the same thing keeps happening.

This isn't the best Mahjong variant I've played, but it isn't the worst either. It's bright and colourful, and it does have those little bits of other games interleaved with the main game, which is good.

In a way it's the actual tile-matching part that becomes annoying after a while. There isn't much variety to that, so it's not a game I'd play for hours at a stretch. But then - that's a good thing, after all, because when I get tired of that I go back to work!

The music is okay, and the hints do their job when required. So today's game is not a star, but a good all-rounder, and a reasonable way of spending your tea break.

Thanks as ever to GGAOTD, Playrix, and of course the star of this particular show - Whiterabbit!

:-D

Well, in spite of the negative comments, I am going to download this and give it a try. I love these pseudo-Majhong games, I love Hidden Object games, and I trust Playrix and White Rabbit. besides, unlike the many games I paid for after a one hour trial, and then found out I didn't like, I can always uninstall without feeling like I have wasted money. By the way - I am absolutely hooked on Star Defender 2 that was given away on April 25th. I installed it for my grandkids but I have made it to stage 5 - Yeah me. Thanks again, White Rabbit!

..................................Moderator Comment.............................

Thanks Stonebec. I used to loce Star Defender and its sequels. sort of played it out a few years ago and moved on to other shmmups. There has been a load of them released over the last year. Some of which are fantastic. Still, Star Defender is one of the better ones..

My November installed game on XP is permanently frozen on the map screen by the first plaza statue :-(. I will uninstall and try this download. I won't be able to report on outcome today as we are working on getting the income tax done :-(.
Thanks Whiterabbit

..................................Moderator Comment.............................

I have to sort my income tax as well. Already over a month late. Thankfully I informed the Customs and excise that I was having problems getting info from my banks about the interest I'd received, so they have cancelled the £100 fine so long as i sort it soon. I hope the reinstall works for you. If there is still a problem, check the FAQ's thread over in the game discussion forums. I've linked to it in my review at comment number 1.

I rarely comment as a rule so feel compelled to thank you guys for providing these games and also to you White Rabbit, for your excellent reviews. And everyone who thumbs up/down so I have a better idea of whether or not to download, although when I do see a game I had before my external hd died tragically, I ignore everything and just get it.

Hugs!

One quick note about the first hidden object segment. You match the saw to a sawfish, not a swordfish. They're rather different critters, and a sawfish makes more sense as a match.

Like many of the commenters the last time around, a) I found the mahjong part tedious in the extreme, and b) noticed that the game reuses art from the Surprising Adventures of Munchhausen. Did anyone ever establish whether or not there's a connection between the publishers of the two games?

In addition to the mahjong sections being tedious, my Win 7 computer displayed a rather annoying tendency to randomly freeze on the map screen.

............................Moderator comment..................................

Thank you for your feedback. I was surprised to see this repeated so soon after it was given away Nov 2014. However, it was a different distributor that gave it away.

I love Hidden Objects games, as well as Mahjong (although not as much), but I played this game for about 10 minutes, and un-installed it. I had forgotten that I downloaded it the last time that it was offered and hated it. I can't remember if I ever completed it. Probably not since it's one of the most irritating games that I have ever played. You go through several games of Mahjong (with the same old tiles) just to find a silly cannonball, and then do the same for 2 more items. Also, the round picture in the middle that has items that have to be matched with items on the right. Even on casual mode, I had absolutely no patience for this totally irritating game. Most Hidden Object games that I got on this site, I either like or love, but I think I have finally lost interest in Mahjong.

..............................Moderator Comment...........................

The games most community members think of as Mahjong are not actually Mahjong, they are the equivalent of the simplest patience card games using cards, using Mahjong tiles instead of cards. Real Mahjong (or Mahjongg) is played with four players and plays much like a game of cards where you make sets and runs of cards, with seasons and flowers. Each player chooses a set number of tiles, then the rest of the tiles are built up into a four walled castle. These tiles are slowly taken from the walls by the players.

Does anyone knows name of the game, where you can learn to play real mahjongg? I mean - with other players, can be computer AI of course. Mahjongg as a board game seems pretty challenging...

........................................Moderator Comment...........................................

Yes, I purchased a four player version called Hong Kong Mahjong which allows you to play against three AI players. You can get it from the following address@

http://www.ninedragons.com/

The only annoying thing about the game, isn't the actual game but the number of activations you get before having to ask them for more. I think its five. I format my computer at least once yearly, but more often twice and even three times, so my activations have been used up. I've not been able to get more activations because the freeserve email I used was suddenly closed. They closed down thousands of acconts with no warning. I purchased the game via that particular email, so lost the abilty to get more activations. I've considered buying the game again, but find that the cost of the game is rather expensive compared to most other arcade games. The game was released at least 10 years ago and hasn't been updated much graphically, so looks a little dated, but the game play is excellent. The cost is £14.20 (approx $21.20)

There is a free version of four player Mahjongg, which may have been added to the free games project that you can find over in the forums. I can't remember the name of the game now due to my memory problems (part head injury, part opiate intake). It may be found in the synopsis, but if not somewhere in the 100 plus pages of the game discussion forums. It's worth checking the synopsis first as the first 100 weeks of the project were sorted and any game posted in that period was added to the synopsis. The rest are to be found in the many pages of the game discussion forums. It's most likely under the title Week number then one of two titles, Good Games to Grab or Free Games for the Weekdays. I together with some other guys started posting freeware games on a daily basis a few months after the Daily game giveaway went to weekends only. Since my house move I haven't had the time to devote to the project, so ony a few games have been posted over the last two years. There's at least two thousand freeware and abandonware games posted over the 127 pages of the forums. The early posts don't have images included becasue the site wouldn't accept images originally, then the site i used to post images closed down a couple of years ago, so many of the images i did post won't be there any longer. I',ve meant to update the project many times, but to be honest, not may community members have ever really shown any interest in the project, plus the advent of the indie bundles where you can get several commercial indie games for a dollar or two has made the project almost useless. For example a couple of years ago, the Humble Bundle ran a THQ bundle where you paid $5 for over $400 worth of AAA games, then codemasters did the same, and since then a couple more. several months ago, Origin had one where you paid a couple of dollars for Battlefield 3 plus several other high profile games and they repeated that recently (only ended a few days ago)

Mahjong Secrets

In Brief

A simple solitaire mahjong game with hidden Object elements and a story. Excellent graphics overal, tohugh the mahjong tiles are quite simplistic, but easily distinguished compared to some solitaire mahjong games I have.

Mahjong Secrets 002

Mahjong Secrets 003

Installation:

Mahjong Secrets downloads to an 131 MB zip file that unpacks to a read me and a wrapped setup file (the orange colored file with the key symbol), plus there's a setup file with security (setup.gcd) that's protected from being hacked (because the previous giveaway system was easily cracked). This file may case some security software to alert the user to a possible malware attack, but it will be a false positive.

The game giveaway team check all game giveaways for malware using several well known anti -malware suites. There has never been a game giveaway infected with malware since the project started back in Dec 2006. (The owners know that allowing such things would compromise their buisness, so they make sure all software given away via the giveaway and gamegiveaway sites are throughly checked for all types of malware before allowing community members to download any files.

Some community members have been having problems installing games since the security software was added a couple of years ago. It's been found that turning off your security temporarily or, especially if you don't feel comfortable turning off your security, configuring it to accept the setup.cgd file. That usually sorts the problem out.

To register and install the game click on the orange colored icon. The installed game is 161 MB in size. and installs to the following path by default:

C:\Program files x86\Playrix Games\Mahjong Secrets\

The path can be changed to suit wherever you prefer to install your games. I install all my games onto separate hard drives. Those with large memory requirements I place on a solid state drive (J Drive) and most arcade games go on my spanned F drive (two drives making up 4TB). Once the game is installed you can delete the giveaway setup files. is a shortcut installed to the desktop and the Start menu. There's also an uninstaller in the Start menu, but, if you have Win 8 it is easier to use the uninstall tool via the control panel, or go directly to the game sinstalled folder and use the uninstaller. There's also a shortcut pointing to Playrix's web site, which can be deleted with no affect on the game.

The game works on both Win 7 and 8.1. I don't have a Vista or XP installed any more, so can't comment on whether the game will run on those platforms.

Mahjong Secrets 3

The Game:

Mahjong Secrets is an interesting fusion of Hidden Object, Adventure and Mahjong.

The basic game play in Mahjong Secrets is that you complete board after board of Mahjong where you are rewarded with an inventory item after finishing each board. You can use that item to interact with things in the scene to complete the tasks similar to those in HOPA games (Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure), then you move on to the next scene. At the start of each new scene, there will be a type of Hidden Object puzzle. They are not really Hidden Object scenes more like match the items given to the items in the scene, for example, in the first scene you match a squirrel with nuts and a hand skyth with hay a rifle with a pheasant (that's hanging upside down), frog spawn with tadpoles, a horse with a sea horse, a diamond with a pearl and a hand saw with a sword fish. There's no timer whjen searching for these matches and there appears to be no consequences for clicking any where you wish.

mahjong secrets 640x480 screenshot 3

The Hidden Object scenes have nice graphics, however, they are quite frustrating. Sometimes it is really hard to find objects that are relevant and sometimes they are not very obvious. The Hint button reloads at an extremely slow rate so it doesn't give you much help.

The Mahjong boards are as entertaining as Mahjong can be and they can be skipped after the Skip button fully loads (took sometime though). Hardcore Mahjong fans might find this game a disappointment because the Mahjong boards are not very challenging as well as not very fancy to play. They are standard boards with Shuffle and Undo button and it is impossible to get stuck since every time you get stuck; you can shuffle the board instantly. In some cases, especially towards the end of the table you may find you are shuffling virtually every other move and in some cases two or three shuffles in sucession beofre you are able to match any tiles.

screen1

There are two playing modes casual and expert. The former mode has active zones highlighted with sparkles and the skip and hint buttons recharge faster, whereas the latter mode has no active zones indicated and the skip and hint buttons take longer to recharge.

On the other hand, the visuals in Mahjong Secrets are very appealing. All scenes are brightly lit and are very colorful; characters are nice-looking as well. The music is very charming and is not annoying. There is also a story to follow and although it might not be the most original one; it is interesting to follow.

Music:

If you don't like the in game music, you should be able to exchange the music files which are located via the path below:

C:\Program files x86\Playrix Games\Mahjong Secrets\sounds

If you decide you'd like to change some of the music I'd consider keeping a copy of all of the original ogg files at least until you've tested and made sure the game still runs properly. Make sure that you rename all exchanged music files with the ones you are replacing, and also make sure you convert each file to the ogg format as well. :)

CPU: At least 1.6 GHz (single core)
sysRAM: 1024 MB (1GB)
Direct X: 9.0 or higher
Hard Drive: 165 MB

Conclusion:
The game is quite frustrating and boring at times. However, its package is very attractive and the idea behind this game is good; it just needs a little work here and there. An ideal game for all the family.

Overall I give this a thumbs up, especially if you love Mahjong solitaire. There's no innovation apart from mixing adventure, HOG and Mahjong together , but the game is well constructed and also gives you two modes casual and expert .

Problems:

If you have any problems installing or getting Katy & Bob: Way Back Home to work please go HERE for help. I've posted all of the common problems and solutions in a FAQ thread, which you can find in the sticky section of the forums by following the above link.

If you are posting late in the day I would also suggest posting in the main giveaway forums, in the game discussion section because I cannot moderate 24hrs a day over the weekend. I've created a thread HERE for that purpose. If you've installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn't guaranteed). Sometimes you can still register the game after the giveaway has ended so long as you managed to start the download before the giveaway ends. I've tested this and the grace period lasts for up to 1 hour.

It’s always worth checking out the free games sites because sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them. MyPlayCity (MPC) has the most with over 1000 games to choose from. Other sites include Gametop and FreeGamePick. Katy & Bob: Way Back Home is available from from MyPlayCity. (See link in the introduction section above). I've not checked the other free game sites (partly becasue i'm way behind in posting this review today

If you do download any games from MyPlayCity, Gametop or the other free game sites 'do' watch out for toolbars etc. Make sure you un-check the check-boxes during installation, and, in the case of MyPlayCity, every time you boot the game up, (this may have changed now as these free game sites tend to change the format frequently. .. I've posted links to all of the common free game sites below in the games, games games section. :)http://steamcommunity.com/app/263200
For now I won't be recommending you download games from Jenkat Games. They have changed the way you get games from their site. Diane has posted information about this over in the game discussion forums. If I have time or remember, I'll link to it.

There are 414 games on sale over on Steam this week, ranging from 10% to 90% off. There's also a Sega sale this week with up to 75% off publishers prices. You can find a full list of all sale items HERE.

You'll also find some excellent deals over on the following Game sites.

GreenManGaming
Gamersgate Summer Sale
GOG (DRM free games)
Desura
Gamestop
GameFly (soon to be sold off)

Free Game Sites:

MyPlayCity (over a 1000 games to choose from)
Gametop
FreeGamePick

To be honest there are too many game deals around too list them all. Just visit the sites I recommend above and I'm sure you'll find something that suits you for a very decent price. If like me you prefer Steamworks games, many of the above sites also sell steamwork games.

If that's not enough, check out the Game Discussion forums HERE for details of other games either free or on deals such as the Indie Game bundles (there's over 20 of them - If you purchased all of them you'd be paying around $80 for around a thousand dollars worth of games); or check out the four day sales at IndieGameStand. you'll find the indie bundles thread HERE. The thread is outdated, but all of the links will still take you to the latest bundles.

The latest IndieGameStand game is Sword of the Stars: Ground Pounders:

Ground Pounders is a hex-based, turn-based strategy wargame. Inspired by classic strategy games like Panzer General, and steeped in the lore of the Sword of the Stars universe, Ground Pounders offers a new generation of gamers an updated taste of turn-based strategic warfare. Best of all, you can play it cross platform between desktop machine and mobile devices.

Ground Pounders lets players control an army from one of two factions. Each army is comprised of dozens of different unit types. You will lead your ground pounders across a variety of worlds, increase their experience levels and abilities over the course of two campaigns, and use them to unlock special action cards that can add special effects to single-player games, or to up the stakes in your cross-platform multi-player battles.

FEATURES

- Control one of 2 armies – Human and Hivers
- 80+ units covering land, sea, and air
- Battle across alien worlds on exotic battlefields, including airless moons, lava plains, and meteor-blasted wastelands
- Seize orbital superiority and call down bombardment on your foes
- Build airfields, fortify areas, and repair or destroy bridges
- Improve your unit’s experience and abilities over 2 campaigns
- Unlock and collect combat cards, including faction-unique cards!
- Build unique combat card decks and even tune them for specific battles
- Ten scenarios to play in skirmish mode or cross-platform multi-player
- Enjoy a SotSdex filled with Lore details on famous units, personalities, battles and weapon systems

PLUS, if you pay over the average, which at the time of writing was $2.19 you will also get Ground Pounders: Tarkan Campaign DLC, Sword of the Stars: The Pit, and the Ground Pounders High Rez Map Pack. All come with Steam keys and drm free download links. You can pay as little as $1 for the game if you wish. This bundle ends around 5am (GMT) Wednesday 6th May.

The latest Daily Indie game is called Chronicles of a Dark Lord: Episode I Tides of Fate:

Enter a world of shadowy intrigue where stained pasts collide with the present in an explosive confrontation that will define one young man's dark destiny, as he attempts to thwart the machinations of a true evil beyond all imagining...

- Immerse yourself into a dark and complex world of intrigue with over 25 hours of Gameplay
- Includes the previously released "Nightmare Vision" DLC content
- Enhanced retro graphics melded with HD-quality background animations offers a more unique graphical styling presented within a dark atmosphere
- Side-view active-time battle system (ATB) reminiscent of the classic 16-bit RPGs

You can get two keys if you pay more than the average of $1.13. One key to share with a friend or family member perhaps? You'll find that deal HERE. They also have four bundles of several games that'll cost you less than $1.50 each HERE (DIG Bundles 25, 26 and 27 plus Desura bundle 4). You get Steam keys for all of these games apart from the Desura bundle. Though some of the games are on Valves Greenlight project and should get Steam keys if Greenlit. The single game deal ends Midnight Tuesday (GMT) and will be replaced with Chains a challenging puzzle game with a unique feel and distinctive vector graphics style.

Most of the other bundles retail for around $5 give or take a few dollars (apart from the Daily Indie bundles that only cost $1.49 for six games), but you can pay as little as a dollar for some.
The free game from Origin has changed to the original Syndicate from 1993. It's been optimised for todays computers. Well worth getting, especially if you are into classic games from the 1990's Check it out HERE

A Request for helpl>:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

Regards

Whiterabbit aka Stephen
