I found the game boring. Would try to get the same robots but nope, time's up. Too much like two other games, one the butterfly catcher. Would like something like Burger Rush" or "Mystic Inn".

It's the "doublegames fishing engine" but this is done a bit better than the rest, if you need one from the collection to keep, I'd pick this then bin the rest you had installed..

I must say I created stuff like this with ease using Klik & Play (game creation tool that was the precursor to Gamesfactory) back in 1996.

Klik n play is now Freeware too which is rather cool.

In addition to the numerous problems mentioned, ut also has the tendency to go back and forth along the top, but the line wouldn't go down to catch things - the only way I could get it running again was to restart it. It was a pretty game to look at, though.

On to better things - As I mentioned yesterday (very late in the game!): Any chance we might get Peggle Deluxe? This is really a great game - Like "Plinko" (on the TV show Truth or Consequences) on steroids! I noticed on the site yesterday there was a huge section of games that were full versions for free and it is included, but for some reason, I can't get them through my firewall - so I would love to see it here. (I'll come back with the link to the free ones if I can find it again - It includes "Super Collapse 3" and a bunch of good ones.) So please consider bringing it here.

Thanks GGOTD Team for all that you bring us.

PS Here is that link - they are trials, but not time limited:

@ #10:
Yes, I'm aware of how stores work thank you. but there is a difference between being an actual publisher (Such as bigfish games is to virtual villagers), and hoarding every peice of software you can find and selling it in a slightly different package. Had you taken the time do actually do any research about the games that Double Games "Publishes", you would see that they are in fact NOT the publishers of a lot of the games. Again back to virtual villagers, it's created by "Last Day of Work", and published by "Big Fish Games". It even says so in the splash screen for the game. If double games WERE an official publisher they would have their company in the splash screen, as it would not be hard to make a new splash screen for an official publisher.

Maybe next time instead of writing out your little anecdote you'll do a little research on the topic at hand.

Ok Carnivalborn and everyone else like him, PLEASE. The software for one is NOT FREE. It is only free for a period of 24 hours on this website ONLY. Otherwise most titles range from $9.99 to $30!! And secondly, why in the hell does it bother you people so much? The concept is not "don't like it, don't download", you people obviously have the most minimal observational skills. A lot of these games are presented to us without descriptions or screenshots, so please, don't say mindless things like "don't like it don't download it". How about this "don't like reading people's comments, DON'T READ THEM AND DON'T POST MINDLESS FOLLOWUP COMMENTS THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GAME ITSELF)

That being said, this game is awful for obvious reasons. Not recommended.

I really wanted to like this game, the graphics are really nice, the robots are cute, but...alas, it is not a good game. The gameplay is painful, the music is annoying, the game is jerky even when small screened. Played a couple of times, then the catcher thing quit working, closed it out, tried again, worked for one round then...yes... dead again. I quit! This would not even be fun for little kids! It seems to have potential, but as it is right now, I wouldn't play or pay for this; it needs some serious work!! Sadly, thumbs down.

Good morning fellow gamers! ;)

Today's game downloaded/activated and installed seamlessly. It seems that I never have a problem in this area, either with the games part of the website of the serious software give away site.

For those that constantly have download issues - I suggest Free Download Manager. It's the only way I download anything these days, and I never have issues with corrupt files etc. Depending on the size of the file - you can also instruct it to download the file in several parts at once which speeds up any download considerably.

It's also won many awards from the normal download sites.

I'm sorry for the off-topic mention, but I really do feel badly for all those that have constant download issues.

Review:

Today Double Games have shown that they can be part of the game publishing world with decent games (albeit still only with clones!) This is a dead-ringer for "Gold Miner Joe" and other 'fishing' type games we've seen over the recent past here.

The graphics (cartoons,) are amusing and lovely at window or or full screen with an obvious quality. The colors are vibrant; light source seems consistent; and they are just an all around pleasure to see while you're playing. Kudos to this game's very adept graphic artist!

The opening screen, reveals four choices; 'Instructions;' 'More Games' (I hate this in any game!) 'High Scores' and 'Play.'

The 'Instructions' screen, adequately explains the two types of game play: Campaign mode and Action mode - both of which have been seen in previous games of this genre. This screen explains the game 'Objective' also.

There is another part of the 'Options' screen that explains the 'Interface.' Very nice for those who aren't used to in-game access to options.

The music thankfully can be turned off! It's just terrible - though very young children will probably like it.

Robots: Each kind of robot is explained. They differ in size, weight, depth etc., - nothing new there. It's a bit dissonant seeing some robots swim, others fly and yet they're both beneath you to catch?!?!? Did the game developers really think we wouldn't notice??? ;)

Game Choice: I was a bit taken aback when I clicked play and was presented with this screen. You can easily see the headings; 'Campaign Mode and 'Action Mode,' however the rest is illegible in black text on a dark brown background. My first and only disappointment in this game (so far,) was finally washed away when I found that hovering over either description, lit up the fluorescent tube from above.

Game Play: Stephen (#11) has described this adequately, so I won't repeat his findings, as I'm sure I'll agree :) my only comment here is that it's NO different to previous 'fishing' games - right down to the gold bullion chests on the sea floor.

Major Gripe: NO function to save your game and return to the same point when next you launch the game.

Points:

4 for outstanding cartoon grahics;

2 for ease of game play;

1 for NOT leaving any shortcuts on my desktop! (This IS Double Games right?);

1 for a good explanation of the interface;

-2 for the inability to save the game;

-1 for being a clone;

-1 for not introducing any originality at all;

-1 for the 'More Games' link on the opening screen;

-1 dreadful music with no other choices.

TOTAL: 1/10 plus a thumbs up (for actually getting me to uninstall all prior games of this genre and keeping this one!)

However - this game is certainly the one (out of this genre,) that presents best on screen - and as someone else mentioned, I too, will be uninstalling all other 'fishing' type games and keeping this one. (Did I just say that?!?!)

My thanks go to Double Games - I have to say that your tenacity with this group of reviewers is impressive to say the least, [wry smile.] Now if you can only get out of 'clone mode' - you might actually be able to win us back over.

'Peggle'is a game that we would probably enjoy reviewing for you. It's a pretty unique concept in its game play - which is just what many of us are looking for now.

Thank you always to GOTD for their efforts and their little successes and failures that all go towards making an initiative workable.

Have a wonderful day everyone - get out in the sunshine!
~ Swan ;)

The first thing I always do when opening a new game is flick through all of the screens and I do love it when High Scores have names already in place by the developers. In this case there are a selection of names for both Campaign and Arcade mode of Magnetic Bait - Homer and Bart are in there (...) - as is "Beer Bob" - naturally, if the game is good enough for Beer Bob then it's good enough for us!!!! :-D

Despite it being true that the software offered here may not necessarily be from the developers as opposed to the vendors, I do get the feeling that the games offered by Double Games are their own work. The graphics are always very similar and other coomon aspects feature in all games - not one of them ever tells you about controls, you are left to figure it out by yourself. It would be too much of a coincidence that such similarities are unrelated and as such I do believe that all games offered are from the same developer, regardless of whether that is Double Games or another developer that they are singularly giving the games of to this site.

This game is identical in all respects to Fishing Trip and Butterfly Catcher - there is little or no difference between each of the 3 games other than the fact the theme is different - Fishing Trip was a fisherman and fish; Butterfly Catcher a spider and insects and now Magnetic Bait is a magnet and robots.

Personally I do not like any of these 3 games. I do not say that lightly as I do appreciate the graphics, the work and detail, and in the case of Butterfly Catcher, the Spider's shop really made me laugh. But each of these games are frustratingly hard to play, the thing that you control be it a fisherman, spider or magnet is so, SO slow and I have to keep at the mouse to try and get it where I want it. The movement is not swift or efficient and with the amount of time given per lvel being minimal as it is, by the time the game is over, many obscenities have been muttered and a minute of pure frustration has passed. I am not sure if this would be any better with an actual mouse as I am using an Acer Aspire's pad but I can't see how it could be much better and as such this makes the game not a fun experience at all.

Talking of time, I also don't particularly favour games that are purely time limited. I work under pressure and when I play games I like to be able to somewhat relax. Despite the "Campaign" mode implying it is not timed and the "Arcade" mode being such, both are timed, albeit in different ways, the former giving you 60 seconds to complete your task of picking up 3 consecutive objects of the same thing, the latter giving you 60 seconds from the start and threatening to run out if you don't collect objects that will pay you with more time. I like games that give you a choice, Age Of Japan is a great example, it has a timed mode and an untimed mode, the untimed limiting the amount of moves you can make rather than having seconds ticking down. Games should have the opportunity to be somewhat relaxing when you want them to be and timed when you want an extra challenge.

I do like the graphics of Magnetic Bait, the robots are gorgeous and their characteristics have been well thought out, my favourite being "Walkorobot", in fact I spent the first few games transfixed on his movements! As Whiterabbit (hi to Whiterabbit by the way, hope today went well for you. Thanks also for your link of Super Blocks 3 yesterday - wonderful, wonderful game!!!) said, there is no mention of different forms of bait until you go into the shop (I didn't have enough money to buy anything as the furthest I got was level 3 with the princely sum of $12. Any longer playing and the lappy would have been in the pond with the frustration of a stationery magnet (it's been a long day...)) which is quite an obscure way of mentioning what is an important part of the game. Different contraptions you can buy do different things and are advantageous in their own way, from allowing you to pick up multiple robots in one go to "making the magnet engine more powerful and faster moving" - at a price of $1000 I think the developers had a big plate of irony for breakfast as I for one would never get anywhere near that amount without having the tool in the first place......

I am not sure how many more such games Double Games can think of with different themes and if the movement was smoother and response to mouse presses swifter then it could potentially be quite playable. Insect Catcher was a similar idea but the spider moves MUCH better in that one. I am sorry to be negative today but if these games could have the ease of movement of Insect Catcher then it would be far more enjoyable; as it is, for the sake of my sanity if nothing else, I'll leave this one in the capable hands of Beer Bob ;-)

@CarnivalBorn : We aren't complaining about free software, but about shady game publishers and repeats in the download. Its one thing to have a game genre (like ball and bat games) its another to have the same game with different gfx from the same publisher.

OK, I have posted a few times on previous occasions on why I feel DoubleGames equals waste of time. So I won't repeat myself. But, I would like to offer a constructive criticism. Magnetic Bait? If I was scrolling through a list of games I would not gave that a second glance, and if I did it would only be to mutter, "That sounds dumb."

Is there anything in the forums about DoubleGames? Has GGOTD made any comment in response to the OVERWHELMING amount of negative comments about this company and why a lot of people hope to never see them again?

Still like the sight, appreciate the work going into it. Haven't kept a game in over a month though. Patiently waiting till tomorrow. Again.

I don't like this game because it finishes too quick and never lets you go to the next level......something stops it from doing this even if you catch 8 robots.......there is no real explaination how to go shop when you have enough robots...the game just finishes before you can......good game if it worked properly.

Meh a rehash of another game. Even if it looks ok, Its from DoubleGame, so its not getting on my HD. Also, whats with the "Featured Game" section linking to .exe? Is GGAOTD.com freegame4rest.ru's pimp or something?

Like if I will buy anything from a shady Russian web site...

Thanks Whiterabbit for a very thoughtful and thorough review. The screenshots are an excellent addition. Tells me what I need to know without me going through the process of downloading, interpreting, playing, and then deciding what to do with it. The comment about age group was enough for me. No challenge, no download for this one...

Morning!

Todays game is "Magnetic Bait". A fishing game where you catch robots. Wow, where to start....

The game it self is very simple. Drag magnet across map. Drop magnet on robot, robot comes flying up to you. The game moves very slow, the robots don't swim fast, and unless you can pay up $1000, your magnets not going anywhere very fast.

The weapons shop (Or tools shop, as whiterabbit calls it) does help you out. The items range from catching multiple robots, to being able to catch stronger robots, to Uranium, used as bait (Never used.)

I found that i was bored after the first few minutes, but decided to move on. Nothing new. The game is the same the whole time. "Catch # of same fish". They could have mixed it up a little, but, nope.

I found a glitch where when i had caught a fish that my line could not hold, my magnet just stop moving, forever. Well, until i had to restart the campigne. Has this happened to anybody else?

The game is fun for a few seconds, and then its boring.

I give Magnetic Bait a 2 out of 5.

Yes, I did download and try...... it is the same concept as the fishing game, butterfly catcher and insect catcher!.. These games are all exact play only changing the "characters". I truly think they have worn out this concept! I did think yesterday's was a bit better of them, but all in all, after about 5 minutes it gets really annoying!! Don't blame GAOTD for the uninventive minds of some,, they don't make them,, they just offer them!! Thanks for the offer!

CrazyBear, do you honestly think that someone would be a publisher for the bilge DoubleGames pumps out?

Besides, look at the recent duplication of the collapse clones (one by DoubleGames, one by some other company). The only difference in them was the copyright on the bottom. If either company was a publisher for the other, the copyright line would not change. It would have been identical, everything about it.

I'm convinced that DoubleGames is a thief.

Nice one crazy bear. Maybe I gave you a dollar because I bought Operation Flashpoint a few years back. Nice game; although I play the battlefield series and the update to Flashpoint Armed Assault more. lol; sorry for going off point. Interesting post.

I'll have to cut short my review today. Got a wheelchair fitting and a doctors appointment. (no sympathy please....I'm happy :) )

Todays game:

Main Menu:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/Magmeticbaitmainmenu.gif

No options menu, but as with all double games the music, which is suitable for this game can be switched off via a toggle to the top left hand of the playing screen as can the sound effects if you wish. The volume of the music is controlled by your own speaker controls. And you can toggle between windowed and full screen using the buttons to the top right of the playing area.

Game buttons/controls:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/Magmeticbaitgeneralgameplay.gif

These are not very well explained, but most of us should be able to work it out because we’ve had a few similar fishing games over the last few months.

This is one of those games, with a cartoon feel to it. I would say its ideal for children, especially those that are learning their mouse control skills. So perhaps an age group of between 3 to 6 would be the target group There’s definitely a reasonable challenge for the 6 year old and maybe a little older. I think most adults will find this too boring after the first 5 to 10 minutes (IMO), especially as there’s no real challenge involved. There’s two game modes:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/Magmeticbaitgamemodes.gif

Action

This is all out catching as many as you can within a specific time. There's lots of robots on screen to catch, but the game will be extended the more combinations of robots you collect. The game is over once the time runs out. That's it. No levels to progress through. All the power-ups are available from the start of the game which includes power and speed magnets, uranium, chains for strength, so that you can pull heavier loads, and multi magnet. Unfortunately there's no explanation as to what each of these items do, although I have made guesses above. These are supposed to be available in the action mode from the start, but there's nowhere that tells you how to activate then; also there's no information about the bait that can be used. there is a counter to tell you how long the bait is active for; but while playing the game I never saw any bait (wouldn't know what it looked like) Sorry, I haven't got time to play the game long enough to work out what all the power ups do.)

In Game image for the action mode:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/Magmeticbaitingame.gif

Campaign

Start up screen when entering the Campaign mode:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/Magmeticbaitcampaignmode.gif

Te main differences between this and the action mode is that you progress through levels provided you attain the goals set at the beginning of each level, which is usually to collect a specific number of a certain type of robot. You cannot collect all types. A screen at the beginning will show you which robots you can collect. Once you've attained the target the level ends. any remaining time left is given as a bonus, which can be exchanged for improved tools such as a longer line or better magnet. At the end of each level you can go to the shop to buy power ups which are loosely called weapons in the instructions, but really are just tools to enable you to catch robots easier.

In Game Image for the campaign mode:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/Magmeticbaitingamecampaign.gif

The Robots:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/Magmeticbaitrobots.gif

You can read about each of the robots from the instructions menu by clicking on the picture from the menu (click on above link to see). There's also gold to collect from treasure chests. The whole treasure chest can be recovered once you've bough suitable tools.

The instructions give plenty of information about robots and their worth, but I couldn't find anything out about the bait that is available. So hopefully Swan or Merril will be able to enlighten you about that.

Kero,
You do know that companies like EA, Microsoft, Sony, and a bunch of other big-name game companies do NOT make the games they sell right?
They are called publishers. Publishers market the game, hype it, advertise it, put it in a shiny little box, and sell it to big-name stores. EB, Gamestop, Best Buy, Wal-Mart..
DEVELOPERS, who 90% of the time do NOT work for the publishers make the actual games.
First a developers will make a concept or beta of the game, then go shopping for a publisher. Then a publisher will say, we will pay you $X for the rights to the game. Or, they may say, you keep the rights to the game but you only get royalties on the number of games sold.
That's how the software industry works. If you don't believe me, pick up any PC, Xbox, or PS game and look on the back, if it is a Microsoft game, look closer for another name like DICE, or ACE, or Cow Dung Games Inc.
That's why a lot of times a game comes out, has bugs, and the publishing companies tech-support sucks butt. They didn't make the game so how are they going to give you tech support on it?
It's also why a lot of games suck. A publisher will hound and push a developer to finish a game even if it's not ready so they can sell it during peek sell seasons (Christmas, Summer vacation, etc).
I wish more people understood this, then you wouldn't see so many 'tards on game forums asking EA why they never answer bug reports or improve this or that in a game. They have to either A) Specify in the contract with the developer that they will fix and bugs or B) Provide support staff to the publishers so they can answer questions about bugs or feature requests in a game. Of course the Publishers like EA have some of their own in house developers too, but that's more rare than not. I made an add-on for a game called Operation Flashpoint once, I released it as freeware, then some French company released a mission pack using my freeware mission editor. Brrrrt.. Illegal. I had to sue them for damages and ended up getting 1% royalties for every copy they sold. (Which came to about $2000) I mean I made it for free and they violated the clause and my copyright by using free code to make a commercial product. Anyway, getting off track. I'm not meaning to sound harsh/mean or anything like that but I just don't think a lot of people realize there is a difference. That's why when you buy a game, it makes sense to see who the developer is so the next time your favorite publisher, like EA, Sony, etc comes out with a game you can decide if the game will be good or not. The ONLY games I know for sure that EA ever made in-house WAS the Madden series and the Need for Speed series, but that's not the case anymore. Think of Publishers as the waitress in a restaurant and the developers as the cooks.
Stuck with a bug in a game? Find out who the developers are (most of them have websites) and hound them instead of the publisher and you'll get a faster more accurate answer most of the time.

The same as the rest of the fishing games...

The graphics are a little better...

But all in all not worth downloading (in my opinion)...

A new alien shooter would be much more fun :D

Uh-huh. Almost the game I've seen in Double Games are the others companies' sites. But I guess it's worth for a try .

This is basically the same game that's been on here twice last week. Plus it's double games. I'm not sure they even MAKE games. Most of the games i see on their site are by other companies, such as virtual villagers.

Dead ringer for Fishing Trip the way it SHOULD have been. It appears that Double Games was listening. The concept of the game (to advance by catching enough [insert the prey here] to get better, faster equipment with each level) is exactly the same as several other games, however this particular version fixes some/most of the problems with the other versions.

The graphics are fresh and very appealing, and the robots really are "cute" (as the description says). There's now a side panel to keep up with information instead of a pop up window when you catch something.
And there's a pause button!

There are still some problems. The first few levels (I played through level five) seem very slow and clunky, and there is still lost game time when there's nothing in range to catch. All in all, though, I'm glad I downloaded it, and I'll be uninstalling all the versions that came before.

This time Double Games surprised me in a good way.

Looks like the "same old DoubleGames" game concept...
