Falco Brains is an unusual variation of the Match 3 genre.

Magic Maze drops you into a 3D dungeon with nothing but your trusty firearm and a nose for treasure. It's up to you to explore the labyrinthine passages, sniffing out riches and mowing down the monsters that try to get in your way. Your skills will automatically upgrade as you progress through the 12 action-packed stages, allowing you to freeze monsters and unleash toxic gases that clear the way to the exit. Once you find the Three Gems on each level, you'll be allowed to advance to the next level, only to find ever-greater challenges with each step forward!

The goal in each level of Magic Maze is to collect the Red, Green and Blue stones, which opens the exit. This is done by exploring the mazes, shooting any enemies that get in the way and collecting bonus items, which aid in combat and are used automatically. Since this is an action role-playing game, skill upgrades are also automatic.

I don't get this game give away website.. I see a game, search the game on Google, and it says it's free to play. Isn't Game Giveaway of the Day only supposed to give out licensed games, free?

(same goes for Giveaway of the Day, it's like they just find free software and put it on their page)

I'm sorry but this makes me mad

The game may be available on several free game sites, but they are not in reality free. You will find the same games being sold on commercial web sites as well. Basically the developer gets paid for all the downloads from the free site. The free game site wins because of the advertising on their site. Everytime you visit one they earn money.

The game giveaway sites games are still better than those from the free game sites becasdue you don't get the annoyance of your browser being opened everytime you shut the game down and the constant possibility of getting a tool bar and your broswser home page being hijacked. I've known about these free games siites since 2004 and know of the problems and usually avoid them, but I still end up getting toolbars simply becasue i forget to uncheck a box. I much prefer to get a game from this site that those.

This game was no problem in setting up on XP, got it on the first try. (for me, that's good - seniors lose brainpower sometimes):) I've played a few levels, and I'm enjoying it. I like simple games like this to play, simply because everything is do is work related and time consuming with loads of pressure. This is perfect for me to just let loose and enjoy myself. Good work GOTD - I like Alawar products, because their graphics a pretty darned good for these old eyes.

I've installed this game on 4 computers, with 3 operating systems (XP, W7 & W8) and the opponents, at least on the 1st level, are definitely dogs, not rabbits; so if anyone is squeamish about killing innocent bunnies, you may rest easy ;-)

Yeah, it's not too tough once you get the hang of it. At least through the first 4 levels or so. Like a lot of these games, the inexperienced don't always know what their doing. Maybe the symbols are easily self explanatory, but I'm not sure what a lot of the coins I'm picking up do for me, or how exactly I'm increasing my skill levels. Probably one and the same. Or why monsters leak hearts (I'm guessing I pumped enough shot in them and their in their death throes) or why the cat's sometimes surrounded with a green energy.
Watching the posted video, I did miss out on the instructions about shooting the crates, though that's partly because I couldn't see them on my ancient monitor often until I ran into them, even with my video card gamma turned up. The video had about twice the brightness as when I play the game. I thought the game had a dark motif. LOL
But the bottom line goes back to one of my pet peeves. How hard is it to write a help file so the non-experience gamers might get hooked by your product too? In this case, how about just one graphic page showing each of the coins and what they mean or how they correspond to the skill levels or whatever. Other than that, simple game, more suited to 10-12 year olds or younger for experienced young gamers, but not without some entertainment value for adults.
I went from memory when I commented on the music of Cradle of Rome last week. Replaying it, I have to agree it can be a little annoying in the mood it creates. This game the music is quite NES-like in it's "arcadiness", though that seems appropriate. But I can see where this game too has some passages that could be grating.

Installed ok on Win7.

Turned the sound and music completely down, however, it's not turned off, still plays at low volume in the background. Had to turn off my sound to get it to go away.

Lack of instructions is a major issue. The couple screen "tutorial" is woefully insufficient.

Biggest problem is the lack of control, especially on a laptop, it's virtually impossible to precisely control your direction. When trying to change direction, you end up moving to the place. As a result of the horrible controls, stopped playing after about 5 minutes.

Hi again
Laptop with XP. I went to change player and also had problems. After you click on the line and the NEW PLAYER button my cursor disappears. I hit ESC and it was back and a new player was added. Hooray.
I hope this helps and I hope they fix it.
Thanks

Hi
If you have trouble with heights/vertigo have somebody else play the Dangerous Heights ;-).
Collect as many lives as you can because four is not enough to get through the Psychedelic Islands for when you die you can replay it but with the lives you came in with originally. So far I have redone that level at least five times. So now I have to replay the whole game and not loose so many lives by dum mistakes :-).
It was only after a level or two that I looked on the right side of screen and ran my mouse over the discs to notice the powerups I collected from chests. They have nice descriptions but I don't see that we have control over which ones get used.
Watching the tutorial does tell you to shoot at the brown boxes. To open normal chests you click on them and after couple of seconds they open up to give you the powerups.
One of the bad guys (rabbits, dogs ...) has the Golden Key that opens the Golden Chest (hope you remember where that was).
I would like to replay couple of the levels (to show husband Dangerous Heights and Psychedelic Islands) but right now it won't let me. Maybe if I ever finish the game it might unlock them.
It is getting late but tomorrow is a holiday here so I will have time to "work" on this.
Thanks everybody
P.S. I am playing this on a laptop with WinXP.

I installed the game on Windows 7 on my laptop. Worked fine with no issues.

Pretty easy to get around the screen. My only 'issue' was with the fact that I don't have a mouse, but a touchpad. However, I still made it through the first level with little trouble.

Thanks GOTD.

Downloaded to Win 7 Pro x64 - could not change player name, it would shut down. Cam up with Memory error...

So, I followed Stephen's advice:

Did you check the FAQ’s over in the game discussion forums? I’ve linkeds to them in my review. Here’s what I posted about MAV’s:

Memory Access Violation:

If you get a Memory Access Violation (MAV) with an older game try the following fixes:

Run in admin mode
try using compatibility mode for XP"

So, I ran in admin mode, and am having no problems - thanks whabbit!

Now on to the review....

Entertaining game. And yes, people, read the directions as they come on the screen. It clearly says to shoot the boxes for prizes. Those prizes are what "levels" your skills up. I guess you can say that I am grumpy too! LOL :D

Every now and then I need a break from the frantic TM games, and I am totally burned out on HOG's. So this is a keeper. Something to goof around on and enjoy. After all, isn't that why we game?

Yal have a wonderful day/night! Whabbit, if one more person mentions the "blocking", I will personally chew them out for you! ROFL

Win 7/64-bit, runs fine. Kinda. Two things: Before the Alawar logo, I got a screen that just said, "LOGO 1". Also, I can't seem to change the player name -- it only lets me input one letter before freezing up (ESC gets back to that menu).

@24 "idon",just manually delete the game folder and its contents. games through GGOTD very rarely actually 'install' as such (which I think may have something to do with having to navigate to the installation folder to create a shortcut yourself), so you should be fine.

If you need to be certain, you can back-up your registry first, but there really shouldn't be any need for that.

I didn’t sleep so I think I’m extra crabby, so take what I’m about to say with a grain of salt.

I doubt the developer will be reading these comments regarding this game, I think the giveaway is strictly to put their name out rather than to get feedback on improvement. This is a very old game and I’ve played other games by this company which were much more polished, so what’s the point in even commenting? Just to complain, that’s all. See? Very grumpy.

What compelled me to post is the distinct lack of a “How to Play” menu option. Yes, I read the extraordinarily simplistic in-game “tutorial”. There are two key things the tutorial left out: how to open the treasure chests and the fact that you can shoot the boxes for prizes. Yes, once I realized I could shoot the boxes I thought, “No duh, it’s a shoot ‘em up game”, but I don’t play these too often, so it would have been nice to be reminded (say with a tutorial) as I didn’t discover this until I was trying to figure out how to access a corner after wandering all over the board.

The first treasure chest needs a key (per the in-game tut). I might have the key, but I don’ t know how to use is (or can tell if I have it). I’ve walked up to the various chests on the board and although they look like the lid opens, there is no indication that I successfully retrieved anything inside. They still have sparkle crap around them, so I’m assuming I haven’t succeeded in this yet. I’ve completed the entire first board, shot every box, but I still can’t open the first chest that needs a key. I’ve walked into it, shot it, tried various methods with no luck.

What to do? I went to the main menu to look at the tutorial and see if I missed something, but no tutorial. Not even a basic “shoot this for this many points”.

I know my cat life takes a few dings, and the heart shape indicates how far away I am from losing a life, but there is no indication how to refill your life. It does happen, as I was 3/4 the way down and now I’m only 1/4 down, but I have no idea if it is simply time or if certain gems fill up your life.

The music is the MIDI Tuba “wah, wah-wah, wah” variety and it makes me want to stick long sharp objects in my ear. I think it’s supposed to be cute and child friendly, but after running around the first board, I no longer have any joy in life. I’m playing some Beethoven now to see if I can recover. I suppose I can play without music, as that is an option, or I can follow the above instructions to replace the music, but I think that may be too much effort for this game.

The cat character is just plain creepy, but they tend to be creepy to me in real life as well. The bunny enemies are holding carrot shields or swords, I can’t tell, everything is so hexagonal. They’re orange in any case. I like fluffy bunnies, especially for dinner, but I have to wonder who thinks children would want to kill bunnies instead of say rats or viscous, viscous cats that leave dead heads on people’s doorsteps or (gasp) pillows. Just sayin’, the choice of enemy is rather strange, especially given the cat character. My dogs like to fling a brace of rabbits around the yard, but I’ve yet to see a cat take one out. (Still grumpy.)

To the reviewer up top: I don’t think that obscenely difficult to read font says “The Gold Goose”, but I can see how you would want to try to impose some form of logic to that logo. I believe it says “Fur Gold Games”. If you pay attention to the icons, there is no way the last can be “goose”, as they “letters” are different. The “fur” was the most difficult to decipher because I kept wanting it to be “the”. Alas, the fur lined nest coupled with the placement of the “dot” in “R” gave it away. Whoever thought that ridiculous title would look good with those splotches they are trying to pass off as font should be publicly humiliated and made to apologize profusely. It’s just something I thought you might want to know. To tell the truth, the 10 seconds it too me to figure it out was the most interesting part of the game. (yep, still very much grumpy)

I feel for you guys trying to get these games, as game companies only want to hesitantly give away the oldest, most dated and boring titles they possess (you know, the ones they can’t pay people to take). Take heed game developers: you are making an impression. If you give away the crap in your closet, we’ll think you are a crappy company. We’ll think the other games listed as ads at the top are just as craptacular as the giveaway. The last great game I got from here was “Royal Envoy”. Polished, fun, and even though I don’t usually play time-management games, it was so enjoyable I bought the sequel.

I’ll be deleting this game from my memory, both real and digital. It’s rather boring and extremely annoying. I have other shoot ‘em ups that are much better and more enjoyable than this. I MAY try it once more later, without the noise being passed off as music, when I’m not feeling so compelled to throw the computer across the room simply because it’s sitting there, but I doubt my opinion of this game will change much. Who knows, maybe the next level will get better.

Grumpily yours, Curmudgeon.

Won't run on XP SP3.
"Error!
Memory access violation"
Downloaded twice.

............................Mopderator Comment..........................

Did you check the FAQ's over in the game discussion forums? I've linkeds to them in my review. Here's what I posted about MAV's:

Memory Access Violation:

If you get a Memory Access Violation (MAV) with an older game try the following fixes:

Run in admin mode

What is a MAV?
A Memory Access Violation occurs when the program attempts to use something which does not actually exist or an error due to incorrect syntax being used for a command.
Calling commands on 'entities' (a line of code or discreet program within a program) which don't exist is the most common cause of MAVs, but other common sources of MAVs include referring to images and sounds which don't exist.

Summary: for WIN 8: set to XP or W7 (vista not tried) compatibility
and 640*480, maybe plus "No scaling at high DPI"
When screen stays black, just klick and wait then some seconds.

What I tried:
Works fine on Win 7 64 Bit (I did the 1st Level)

Does not work on Win 8 - out of the box (unmodified Win 8):
Startet, enterted my playername (not shown during entry), pressed ENTER: Name there: OK. Adjusted Music: OK. Started: see starting-dungeon: OK Next shoud be seen the 1st. dungeon, including expanations: Fail, only a black screen. Killed, tried WIN 8 compatibility-help: no success.
Exactly same in XP-compatibility-mode.
downloaded DX9 from Microsoft and installed:
Now I can'see even the see starting-dungeon: WORSE
changed settings to 640*480 forced: Now same as without any tricks.

changed compatibility to WIN 7, still 640*480: it worked.

have fun

Hi,friends.
I have the same problem as #7 MrLatin.
Stephen,I tried your way-all different Windows, colours and so.But the same result “Domestic PC Display hardware isn’t yet capable of silly resolutions like 1024x768x16bit!”.
If someone has any idea how to fix it,I would appreciate it.
By the way when I tried to remove the game it can not be removed with Revo nor with Windows remove programs.Looks like it is not installed...

Maybe it's just the kid in me, but I think more games should Incorporate mazes :) I like that ability to play one handed. That and the low-violence make it so my 10 month old daughter can "help" me play (by me holding her with one hand and using the mouse with the other).
Improvement idea: Have locomotion only occur when mouse button is pressed (When you let go of mouse, character stop walking.) Also (if possible) have ability to hold down walk button and simultaneously fire gun.... Just a could ideas... Great game :)

I like puzzles and mazes. The cat and mice are cute, but like #4 "JoeJ" I too think that a joystick would come in handy. After some playing you will get used a bit though and things get easier.

I think this is a nice game. I have only two problems:
first:

You should be able to choose while in programstart to choose wether you like to explode the screen into your face or start it windowed. You can set this after the visual violence has already happend.
second:
This will be my personal problem, but I cannot go to the second level in down-left without a missing green gem. This green gem is in the down-right section, but I cannot get there because of the boxes in my way. I just didn't figure out yet what to do about this.

Warning !! could contain spoiler information/ walkthrough.

Installed fine on win 7 ult 64 and played well without video glitches at windows screen.

Warning for anyone who may be dealing with potential carpal tunnel, this game is not carpal tunnel friendly. There is so much finger/click motion that you will find your hand cramping. :(

I like the idea, wish it wasn't with guns, don't have a problem with people and guns, but ultimately there is so many shooters that I just think the market is saturated. (Then again that sales I anticipate.)

I would've liked to have had more 'locking' aspects and perhaps a 'hide and seek' aspect to find the things in the crate. Like, slow auto walk, and magnify over sections of wall... or, something. Crevices can hide keys, perhaps a bit frustrating for younger kids, but for teens it would work.

Thanks for the game :)

Ok for what it is. First time a problem w/ Win 8 x64 Pro. Installed to internal D drive as usual. Make a shortcut. Ran ok. Tried to make new name for Player default. Freeze. Esc key to quit. Reran, get small message box barfing about "silly screen size resolution". Delete folder. Reinstall. Repeat error. Delete. Rerun & just no go at all. RMB on shortcut icon. Properties. Choose Compat mode, check Run as Admin. Game Ok again. But still will freeze if try to overwrite the default Player, Didn't select a fresh slot, might work that way but rarely see name used anyway so default is Ok choice if unchanged.
Game is extremely easy as mentioned. Just a doddle for adults. Thanks anyway guys. Certainly beats that kiddie Cow game yesterday, lol.

I feel for you guys trying to get these games, as game companies only want to hesitantly give away the oldest, most dated and boring titles they possess (you know, the ones they can't pay people to take). Take heed game developers: you are making an impression. If you give away the crap in your closet, we'll think you are a crappy company. We'll think the other games listed as ads at the top are just as craptacular as the giveaway. The last great game I got from here was "Royal Envoy". Polished, fun, and even though I don't usually play time-management games, it was so enjoyable I bought the sequel.

I'll be deleting this game from my memory, both real and digital. It's rather boring and extremely annoying. I have other shoot 'em ups that are much better and more enjoyable than this. I MAY try it once more later, without the noise being passed off as music, when I'm not feeling so compelled to throw the computer across the room simply because it's sitting there, but I doubt my opinion of this game will change much. Who knows, maybe the next level will get better.

Grumpily yours, Curmudgeon.

Installed A-OK on Vista Home Prem., X64. Gameplay is though a little difficult for me ... don't have good control on Aiming toward the Rabbits or whatever they are. When I have more time I have to practice.
Thanks WR & Team. :)

I am using Win7 Home Premium. The program gives "Memory Access Violation" error and doesn't start. Please help.

................................Moderator comment..............................

Hi SKG, there may be help over in the game discussion forums via the FAQ's I posted. I've linked to it in my review. Here's what I posted about MAV's:

Memory Access Violation:

If you get a Memory Access Violation (MAV) with an older game try the following fixes:

Run in admin mode
try using compatibility mode for XP

What is a MAV?
A Memory Access Violation occurs when the program attempts to use something which does not actually exist or an error due to incorrect syntax being used for a command.
Calling commands on 'entities' (a line of code or discreet program within a program) which don't exist is the most common cause of MAVs, but other common sources of MAVs include referring to images and sounds which don't exist.

To poster #14, if you don't like the game say so. Enough with Brain-Washing people "Gun-Free" crap. Do your Children watch "Walking Dead" ... then Ban that!

Error!

Domestic PC display hardware isn't yet capable of silly resolutions like 1024x768x16-bit!

So yeah, can't try this one out.

Game works okay for me on Windows 8 Pro x64, although it appears to have the occasional video glitch, like a black screen near the beginning that wouldn't go away until I clicked the mouse.

Looks like you've got a bunch of unclosed "blockquote" tags in your post this morning, Whiterabbit. Try editing your post and adding a bunch of /blockquote tags at the end to fix it.

Cats with guns are cooool! Have you ever seen that picture of the sniper cat that sometimes shows up in your email?

Are there any cows in this game? That was a cute lil ol cow in yesterday's game! He went MOO MOO!

Or are there any FISH? FISHDOM is STILL the BEST GAME EVER MADE IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF THE WORLD AND IN ALL THE ALTERNATE DIMENSIONS THAT EXIST IN ALL THE MULTIUNIVERSE!

My boss is nice enough but I'd still shoot him anyway.

Does the cat ever die?

That's a really cool way to write your review today. Making us read it one lil word at a time was a neat idea!

I won't be trying this, but I might have if there were a gun-free option for young children. (I do support the NRA %100 though)

** NOT to PUBLISH ** just for you Stephen.

I think you must have mistyped blockquotes en unblockquotes.
The site looks rather funny now (scroll down and you will see).

I loaded the site in an editor (Ultra Edit) and saw in the HTML you do have equal amounts of blockquotes en unblockquotes, but they just don't close every time at the right moment (out of sync).

I know you like puzzles and you probably want to correct the site, so I hope I can give you a headstart: http://i.imgur.com/noJwdRG.png
The numbers represent linenumbers in the source HTML

May be the easiest way is just remove all blockquotes and unblockquotes (see the linenumbers) and fit the new ones in in a clean HTML.

Hope it helped :)

Can someone take a look at thee comments?
It's unreadable because it shifts right after every screendump.

The second screen has subscript The Gold Goose. Why?
The round art below the gold nuggets says 'FUR GOLD GAMES'.

I missed the installation deadline on Sky Taxi 2 since then I was a bit bummed out. But seeing this game today makes me a very Hoppy & Cheerful Frog

Thank you Game Give Away And Thank You Alawar. You have made this one Hoppy Birthday and are making me leap for joy

I am going to install this one right away to make sure that I do not miss the installation deadline again.

I don't know whats wrong with the forum today but I am posting here with Firefox 18.02 & it sure looks messed up. Whiterabbit your post has been stretched out super thin & super long

For some reason your Text portion of the post started out normal but keeps moving to the right by a inch or 2 with every added photo.

For some reason 80 % of your revie has moved over a bit with every new paragraph and photo to the far right and the end of your post is now in a 2 inch margin that has been super stretched down about 4 pages worth of posts.

Thank you for making this a good birthday

Signed
Rick Frog

Try going into compatibility mode and check the display scaling and possibly the Visual themes.

Hi Whiterabbit, I was just trying to read your review, but for some reason it's showing up weirdly on my screen. Every time there is a picture, it's indented, and so is every thing below it, and each new picture further indents everything. It happens both on Firefox and Chrome.

My fault, had neglected to add some coding to the end of several images. (reason quoted above)

This is really a nice game.
And Whiterabbit.... what are you doing? Getting bored with normal sentences? on my screen there are one to three words in every line. I agree it is a way to create a lengthy comment :) :) but easy to read? NO

The game only has a very brief explanation and you have to find out everything yourself, like point and shoot is enough you don't have to be near, you point by clicking the right mouse button on the object you want to destroy.

I've only done a few levels so far and it is fun to play.
The game does not seem to be timed, which is relaxing.
It's also nice it can be set to windowed mode.

Thanks Alawar and GOTD

I was so tired this morning I neglected to add some coding to some of the images I posted. I'd been up all night because my wife and kids were going on a ski trip and had to be up at 4am. I'd spent the night baby sitting a very ill guinea pig and making sure my wife had packed everything. :)

Works on XP SP3. The graphics is OK, but not great, as seen in screenshots. Steering with a mouse is less awkward than I had thought, but still would prefer a joystick. When you left-click far away from where you are and a monster pops up there, you will walk straight into its' arms unless you remember to move the mouse closer to your position, left click to stop there, move cursor to the monster and right click to shoot. Just forgot about it while drinking tea when playing and got beaten to death by 2 huge rabbits at the Candy level. A 3D platform is a nice change from 2D. Thumbs up from me! The game installed by unzipping into C:\Games\Game_MagicMaze. You can of course change it, but no shortcuts or registry changes are made, so you can transfer it later to any other folder.
