Giveaway of the Day - Kingdom Elemental

Kingdom Elemental
April 22, 2012

Kingdom Elemental takes core game play elements from real-time strategy, tactics, and role-playing games and combines them into a game that is painfully easy to pick up and play without committing your entire life, unless you have no life… in which case you may not find Kingdom Elemental to be an adequate substitute.

Kingdom Elemental features nigh unlimited number of possible tactics by pitting combinations of your upgradeable heroes and their unique abilities against hordes of unique enemies like GIANT RAT MOBS! Everyone loves giant rat mobs with their secret furry pockets full of gold and armor! Seriously no giant rat mobs, but thARR be Pirates! Giant War Pigs! A crypt full of living dead who are just begging to be killed… again.

Knights who no longer say “Ni!”, a Flaming DOOM bear who would like nothing more then to BBQ you for lunch, and so much more! The demo is free to check out so you have nothing to lose… except maybe your soul. In short Kingdom Elemental Tactics is like a whack to the head with a +8 Sword of Awesomeness!

Note that the best improvement idea will be rewarded with a license for Kingdom Elemental. Use Idea Informer widget to submit your feedback and do not forget to fill in your name and e-mail – otherwise the Developer will not be able to contact you in case you are the one to win!

Bridge Construction Set

Bridge Construction Set is about building a bridge that doesn’t break, although watching your bridge creation break and plunge a train into the watery depths below can be half the fun. In Bridge Construction Set you design and build bridges and then stress test them to see how your creations hold up under pressure. When test vehicles pass over your bridge and make it safely across you know you’ve succeeded. If they plummet into the river you know you need to go back to the drawing board.

Bridge It

A stunning, beautiful world awaits as you take on the challenge of bridging the chasm. Can you solve the puzzles and avert disaster?
Set in the picturesque surroundings of sparse deserts and dense forests it is your task to strategically design and construct an engineering masterpiece. Watch in eager anticipation as unsuspecting motorists, heavy freight trains and tourist riverboats approach. Will your solution stand up to the test or will tons of mangled steel be sent plummeting into the river below?Bridge Building Bundle

Construct your army out of creatures as varied as the magnificent dragon or mighty warrior to the evil necromancer or holy Templar. Destroy your opponent with a heavy cavalry charge or defeat their army before they can reach you with archers, crossbowmen and mages. Use an unlimited number of strategies to defeat your opponents and earn gold to increase the might of your army. Play Zatikon for free and start building your armies today!

  1. The few reports that have reported (2 reports) that this game is infected with a virus is totally rubbish. Please do not pass up the opportunity to get a decent game just because a couple of users have reported a virus. The giveaway team have never given away a game that was infected since starting this project back in December 2006. The reports are false positives. However if you choose not to download and install this game because of that, all I can say is……. “it’s your loss”

I’ve covered this subject several times over the last three or four years, so won’t labour the point anymore except to say I do feel duty bound to at least allow those reports through even though they will be shown to be false positives and in doing so I know in my heart that some will err on the safe side and miss out on this excellent freebie.

The giveaway site has too much to lose, for example, good standing with the search engines, to start posting games with virii, besides Chronic Logic is a reputable game development studio that have released some excellent titles over the last 10 years since their inception.

Today’s game is from a new giveaway developer, but for me a developer I’ve been hoping to see on the giveaway project ever since it started back in Dec 2006; namely Chronic Logic. Who are they? They are one of the longer serving Independent game development studios that created the cult classic called Gish and the excellent Bridge Builder series (3 games in total) as well as other games such as Astro Driller, Triptych and Zatikon.

Please post constructive comments rather than single statements like this game is c*** or this game is great. If you don’t like the game or if you do, then please say why and if you have any suggestions as to how the game could be improved please share your thoughts.

If we are to hold onto new developers I’m sure constructive comments either positive or negative would be much appreciated by the developers of this game rather than slagging it off just because you don’t like the genre.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to keep this project alive by commenting. 😉

    Kingdom Elemental:

The game downloads to a 128Mb zip file that unpacks to a read me and dual activation and setup file. The game installs to the following path by default, but you can change the path during the installation wizard if you wish:

    C:\Games\Kingdom Elemental

For some reason when you unpack the zip file besides getting the usual read me and dual activation module you get an unpacked games folder with all of the necessary game files to run the game. I didn’t test this to see if it was already registered so I would suggest you use the usual route, i.e. clicking on the orange key file to get the game installed. As with most giveaways there’s no shortcut installed to either the desktop or the Start menu/programs list, so you’ll need to make a note of where you install the game to, especially if you change the default path, so that you can then create a shortcut to the desktop. If you want a shortcut to the programs list, please post a message telling me which operating system you are using and i’ll pot the path to follow to get a folder showing in the program listings. :)

The game works on XP, Vista and Win 7 and according to the developer the game also works with Win 98, ME & 2000. To uninstall the game just delete the installed folder from the path you installed the game to.

    Problems installing or activating

If you have difficulty downloading or activating the game you can try again later or do one of the following – for example once downloaded when you click on the dual activation and set up file you may get the message “Failed to connect. Please try again later” If this happens try re-booting your modem and/or router, failing that reboot your computer or clear out the internet cache, in particular the cookies for the game giveawayoftheday then re-try.

KE:Tactics takes core game play elements from real-time strategy, tactics, and role-playing games and combines them into a game that is painfully easy to pick up and play without committing your entire life, unless you have no life…in which case you may not find Kingdom Elemental to be an adequate substitute. The Game

If you’ve never played a real time strategy game, don’t let the apparent complexity of the game put you off. This game is introduced with a straightforward tutorial at the beginning of the game, taking you through all of the important stages such as camera movement, available classes such as Swordsman, Druid, Bard, Necromancer etc; each with it’s own strengths and skills as well as movement of pieces, attacking and defending etc. I’ve also posted a few videos below showing you some typical game play.

This really is an easy game to pick up for virtually anyone. There’s nothing ground breaking, in fact you could say the concepts used are pretty standard fare used many times over in this genre. What makes the game playable (for me at least) is the humerous approach the developers have taken with Kingdom Elemental: Tactics. The developers decided to injected some humour (American spelling humor) into a somewhat stagnating genre and swathed it in some excellent narration and a welcoming soundtrack.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t going to be an easy ride for everyone. Those familiar to the genre should find most of the game easy going, but difficulty does ramp up as you progress through the levels, to a point where even seasoned strategy players may find their skills wanting. :)

Sooooo…. please do try the game before you decide it’s not for you. Who knows, you may find you’ve discovered a new genre to get into. If you like this you could then take the next step to a whole new world of amazing games like Shogun 2: Total War and it’s stable mates Empire: Total War, Medieval 2: Total War and Rome Total War; or other games such as Stronghold or the Heroes of Might & Magic franchises to name just a few of the better games in this wide ranging genre.

Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll be confronted with challenging levels and a gorgeously rendered game that should keep you going for many weekends. I’m sure many of you will delight in the simplicity of the game and revel in the colorful level construction. When you’re done you could then try out the levels editor and create your own scenarios, either to play for yourself or share with the Kingdom Elemental community. You’ll find details of how to share your levels below.

I’m not going to expand on game play much because the tutorial does that for you. I’m sure the images and videos I’ve posted should be sufficient to whet your appetites and hopefully convert those of you who haven’t really touched on strategy games before to enjoy what for me at least is an excellent genre (though not my favorite) and giveaway; and in my opinion much better than the last few weeks giveaways. That said I doubt it will get as many downloads as those games as it’s not as popular a genre as Mahjong or HOG games, but for me a much more satisfying experience. :)

As you progress through the game you unlock new classes and powers to use during brief arena battles lasting for perhaps three or four minutes each. Unlocking new abilities and characters will hopefully give you impetus to keep playing through to the end of the game and hopefully inspire you to create more levels. I’ve listed all the features of the game below. You’ll find full details of how to play the game in a read me file in the installed games folder.

Unfortunately you can’t play this game in windowed mode (unless our resident game teckkie GMMan can come up with a suggestion easily implemented. :)

Left mouse click on a unit – selects the unit
Left mouse while unit is selected – issues a move or attack command to the selected unit

    Using the Levels Editor

Creating Levels:Instructions for how to create custom levels are located in the levels folder of your Kingdom Elemental installation or you can download them via the following link:

You can also find user created levels over in the Chronic Logic forums via the link I’ve posted below and even share your own with the community. If you have created a level and would like it listed in the forums please zip the file and e-mail a download link to Chronic Logic’s support or if you need to attach the file in an e-mail contact support and they will reply with instructions.

    Download custom levels:

If you’ve never played strategy before here’s your chance to get a decent game, somewhat tongue in the cheek, but still with enough to challenge even the hardiest of strategy players, yet with an easy style that any newcomer to the genre should pick up.

The inclusion of a levels editor is a bonus. That and the custom levels freely available from the developers forums, will give you a game that will last much longer than the usual fare we get from the game giveaway project. I do think the lack of a windowed mode is an oversight that needs to be sorted; perhaps with an upgrade. (see my suggestions below). Overall, not taking originality into consideration I’d score this a good 7.9 out of 10

    Game play – 8
    Graphics – 7.5
    Music – 8
    Replayability – 8
    Originality – not much.

Total = 31.4 which approximately equals 7.9 out of 10

    1) … Include the requirement for a mouse click when moving through the tutorial. and be able to back track so that you can repeat a step easily if needed.

    2) … Include a link to the written tutorial in the main menu

    3) … Enable the player to play the game in windowed mode.

    4) … Include a easy download/upload option via the game for custom levels.

If you have any problems installing today’s game please go HERE for help.

If you’re looking for something other than today’s game check the didimatic site via THIS link for some brilliant deals. Gamersgate has a great sale on at the moment with loads of games 75% off and Steam has a couple of excellent deals as well, for example the Mount & Blade franchise – you can get all three games for $7.50/£6.25 (75%); there’s also 40% off the latest Jagged Alliance game (only released in February). You can get Aqua Pearls for free from Realore this weekend and, if that’s not enough, check out the Game Discussion forums HERE for details of other games either free or on deals. For example, I’ve just posted details of a superb 3D space game called Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn which is totally free. There’s still three or four Indie bundles,on sale (two of them new) called the Be Mine 2 bundle which has has Killing Floor, Plain Sight, Sol Survivor, The Baconing Madballs in Babo: Invasion and Beat Hazard, all for around $5 (but worth over $50) or the Indie Fort Bundle with Kenshi, Steel Storm, Wanderlust, Devil Whiskey, Black Market, Cardinal Quest and Puckbang. The Indie Royale spring bundle which contains Ballistic, Depth of Peril, Inferno, Slydris, Tobes Vertical Adventure and Unstoppable Gorg; and the Humble Botanicula Bundle that contains three of amanita’s games namely Botanicula, Machinarium, Samoraost 2 plus Kooky and Windosill. All of these bundles are pay what you want up to a point. For some there is a minimum, but we are talking $5 or less. Of course there’s loads more games to find via the didimatic link above.

As for Chronic Logic, I highly recommend Gish and Bridge Builder. There’s a new version of Bridge Builder (called Bridge Constructor) available via Desura that’s on a 60% sale at the moment. It’s well worth getting at that price. The originals from Chronic are pretty dated now, though still very playable. The latest one has greatly improved graphics and can be purchased for £6.97 (usual price £16.99) or ~ $10 (usually ~ $25): (UNFORTUNATELY THIS DEAL ENDED THIS AFTERNOON). For the full price I wouldn’t recommend it; however after playing Chronic logics Bridge It, that seems a much better deal. :) Maybe Chronic will be giving us more games in the future. ????

Here’s a video of the game:

A similar one called Bridge: The Construction game is available from the following site:!0,6117391840,11916

There’s also an expansion pack available from the same site. :)

The latest 24 hr deal from steam is Hoard, an excellent arcade game with 75% off you can get the game plus both dlcs for only £1.87, or just the base game for $1.74. This game can be played in single player or co-op. there’s a great deal on a four pack if you are feeling generous towards your best friends. The four pack costs £5.24 (effectively giving you the 75% off plus a free game

  2. my first time to try this type of game, downloaded and activated easly, tutorial was too short for someone who has not played this before.
I understand there is a learning curve and will try to fathom it out.
but looks a good game and one I will try to learn

    ………………..Moderator comment……………

Thanks for your feedback. There is a tutorial in the read me found in the installed folder. Just follow the installation path to find the game:

  3. @1 Whiterabbit aka Stephen
    RE: Faulty Voting ‘System’

    Loose: NO Revamp: YES

Here’s the thing(s): Some folks may be very familiar with given item. Some are just not interested in the offer (for many reasons). Regardless (perhaps unfortunately) it is the meaning of the vote that matters. Those that vote ‘down’ before trying it are probably the same ones that will NOT accept the program anyways – even if you gave it to them for free… see what i mean?

So the only ‘rule’ that really matters (under these circumstances) is that the vendor MUST “extract” the “data” for themselves. If i were a vendor i would examine enough previous offerings to get a feel for the ‘folks’ that visit these sites. (eg: i’ve noticed that several people (on GOTD, not here) consistently ask ‘telltale’ questions (to put it politely) that would devalue their ‘input’ per se)

The ‘other’ rule (which i can’t quantify) is that, as a rule, the voting APPEARS to be skewed occasionally… with little rhyme or reason (to me anyway, since i’m still a newbie perhaps.) If that is the case then telling people not to vote unless they have actually tried the software will have little effect. IF THAT IS the case then revamping will not solve the problem either. So keep the voting (revamped or not) and let the ‘reviewers beware…

    ………………Moderator comment……………….

Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated. I’m going to delete the comment I made about the voting system as it’s been discussed in depth elsewhere on this site and I don’t want a whole section of the community discussing t here when the game is more important. Still I appreciate your feed back. :)
