One small thing with the ranks though guys. It's Colonel rather than Coloniel.

The layout of the terrain and obstacles very much resembles a tank battle game that I had before from GGAOTD. Because of my dinosaur computer I can't use the ones recommended above, so I'm very appreciative of this one. I like being able to shoot at angles with this one too.

Hi Renegade,
I agree that "anti-Semitic" as an adjective is regarded by many (including some dictionaries) as meaning "anti-Jewish" but that doesn’t mean its correct, as Semitic (not necessarily Jewish) scholars have often pointed out. I just like to see words used properly. If people are so hateful as to be "anti-Jewish" then let’s call them that and leave no room for doubt. Sorry about the typo. I have always been a clumsy typist.

Thank you GGOTD for all the games that you have offered that I enjoy. I have several. Thank you also for all the games offered which others enjoy. You have been a great source of diversion from the trials and tribulations of everyday life.... something to look forward to until the grass needs mowing and the flower beds need weeding. If not for your free games, I'd be forced to watch television all winter...UGH!

You have been a bright point in my winters for 2 seasons now and I do look forward to the surprises you bring. If I miss one or two, it reminds me how much I enjoyed the demo and prompts me to buy the game.

Don't let the nay-sayers bring you down... there are many folks that visit your site regularly who do fully appreciate what you have done and will continue to do for them..... count me in as one of them.

This particular game is not for me but at the moment, I am playing 9 of your free games and 7 more which I have purchased thanks to you and your site. Success is what you have accomplished with me. Way-Ta-Go GGOTD. Thank you for all you do.

@33-Gareth. I can not get my tank to fire either, tried CTRL, INS and many other keys. I have a laptop also. So game is broken/not playable on a computer that happens to be a laptop, come on, please fix game already. At least let us change the keys if you can not program properly. There was a previous release that looked identical to this even though I believe this is different. The other one actual worked even though both had crappy controls.

The thing that amazes me is the number of people who act as though they are being left out in the cold if GGOTD fails to provide them with games that they like, as if this is your only source of games to play.

If you're genuinely disillusioned with the site, just stop visiting.

There is no shortage of great games available for free on the internet (legitimately; I'm not talking about piracy or so-called 'abandonware') and if you're not finding what you like here, you can always look elsewhere, or (*GASP*) actually support a developer and BUY a game.

Being critical of the games here is fine. As a user, I hope that people will give their honest (and fair) opinions about what is on offer. But far too many people feel that it's also fine and dandy to be critical of the site and the people who run it, and frankly if it doesn't cost you anything to use the site, you've got very little right to do that. And if you are going to criticise GGOTD, have the courtesy to be polite about it; internet access is not a free pass to be obnoxious.

Oh, and lastly, it looks to me as if GGOTD has been operational since December 2006, or about 1.5 years. 'Old-timer' does not yet apply to such a young site.

To MontanaGrandmom (#27):
Burning the game to a CD probably didn't work because even if you did that, it isn't activated on the computer you try to copy it to. You can only activate a game from this site online, so it won't install correctly if you're not online. You'll either have to connect your grandson's computer online and download it, etc. or just let him play it on your computer that it's already activated on.

For anyone interested, there is a similar type tank game to today's offer called Armada Tanks from Enkord, which has nice graphics, several weapon upgrades, is mostly mouse-controlled, and is fun to play. You can check out reviews, info and download at either of these links:

http://www.enkord.com/games/armadatanks/
http://www.reflexive.com/ArmadaTanks.html

I haven't checked out the game offered here today yet, but getting ready to.

My review of June 22: Enemy at the Gates is at the forums, as usual.

>kw

"I am sorry and wish to let the staff of Game giveaway and Give away a day my heartfelt thanks on the whole. Just because some people can not keep Opinions to themselves and write a REAL review of a product.
I do not understand how all of you can be so ungrateful. Ok maybe this game is not what you wanted or expected. I have not met anyone who can please all at one time. I can not imagine that it is easy getting developers to let you give their product away even for one day thats profit lost."

You're saying that people should keep their opinions to themselves? Why? What's a comments section for, anyway?! Being "ungrateful" for a game with broken controls, horrible graphics and music, and general uplayability is OK, actually. This is the equivalent of getting a bag of poop for free.

"Yes its advertising for them but still each one given away is profit lost. We need to remember how many wonderful things we have gotten and use and still use from the owners of Give away and Game giveaway a day."

Right. We shouldn't care about the dreck that we're getting today - we should pretend that it's the good stuff from last year.

GAH-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!

"Also note that some of us still like Retro games. there are emulators and older style games all over the net as well that you must pay for."

I love retro games. This game takes a retro concept and takes a dump on it. Retro games can be fun - this game is just botched.

"I for one would miss the Give away a day sites if they close. Some programs I use some I don’t. But It is not a reason to FLAME the owners. If you don’t want it don’t get it and go on."

This is the same dumb statement that I've seen every time that I've visited the site. Since when is saying that I hate a game flaming the owners of the site? Do you even know what flaming is? This is flaming:

Slava, you are a ****ing **** for foisting this ****y piece of **** on the people who come here. ****!! You should be ****ing BURNED for doing this!! **** off!

Saying that negative opinions on a game are flames agains the site is like saying that negative opinions on a hairdryer are are protests against Wal-Mart.

"I apologize for my OPINION but I got tired of reading FLAMES not reviews once again."

A little tip: A negative comment that isn't a review isn't a "FLAME". It's somebody's negative comment. Another little tip: Not everyone has to write a review.

"My review is that I do not care for war games and I will anxiously await for the next game posted to see if I would like it."

YOU CALL THAT A REVIEW?! HA-HA-HA!! Try reading a real review, and maybe you'll get an idea of what to write.

"Keep up the good work Staff I will continue to check each day for the surprizes you leave for us."

I sure was surprised.
KW"

Used as a noun the word “Semitic” means a group of languages that includes Arabic, Hebrew, and Aramaic. When used as an adjective “semitic” is the same as Jewish so it does make sense. It’s all matter of semantics (no pun intended). By the way it’s “Ethiopic” not “Eithiopic”.

I downloaded this game but after reading only half of the comments I knew I would not be installing it. I'm afraid I have to agree with most comments about the games here. Most games lately are either repeats or games of such low quality no one would want them. I greatly appreciate the efforts this site goes through to gives us games for free. Yes that is right... free games. But just because something is free does not make it good. I would think if the games are being limited to weekends only, special attention would be given to what is offered. I guess that is not the case. That being said I have not lost confidence in this site. I have plenty of great games and apps from this site. I hope the game issue is just a slump they are going through and soon things will be back to normal. Normal meaning offering games most users will want to download. Weekends only is fine. It gives us something to look forward to after a work week. Come on guys give us the games that brought us here in the first place. On the plus side There is a very nice screensaver on the other side just waiting to be downloaded.

Although I don't have a duty to justify my "opinions" regarding this site, I'm sure myself and other "old timers" here would concur that GGOTD has brought this disappointment to themselves. The newcomers here enjoy the concept of giveaway games. Us "old timers" appreciate that more than any of you ever will. People that have been coming here regularly can tell you the fantastic games that used to be offered here. I know the capability of this site and will continue to express my disappointment when they don't live up to the high quality that they themselves have created. If from day one this site offered the "games" like they do now, you wouldn't have a crew of "old timers" bickering and complaining! We know this site was built on great quality software offered DAILY! Can we help it if GGOTD has us spoiled??? :D

#26 writes, "#17 aka Ben - This game is not as you say “anti-semitic”. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines Anti-Semitic as, “One who discriminates against or who is hostile toward or prejudiced against Jews”."

That is certainly a common usage, but it is incorrect. "Semitic" simply means someone who speaks one of the Semitic languages (an Afro-Asiatic grouping) such as Assyrian, Aramaic, Hebrew, Phoenician, Arabic or Eithiopic. So the phrase "anti-semitic" does not make a lot of sense.

To those that think that there being a swastika makes it anti-Semitic.... get a frigging clue. Google it, read, learn...and don't forget to check out the use of the swastika by the American armed forces.
E.g.: http://www.airminded.net/F4b/BOE_P12.jpg

The game itself is rubbish. Overpriced, underdeveloped, badly programmed rubbish. So no 6 out of 10 from me.

comment on whiterabbit's review
please correct your spelling in this line.

A second upgrade will enable you to fire amour piercing rounds that are even more powerful.

if you read it correctly it sounds like you are playing cupid to a tank.
aka love piercing bullets.

amour = Middle English, love, affection, from Anglo-French, from Old Occitan amor, from Latin, from amare to love
gotten from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/amour

please change amour to armor

1: defensive covering for the body; especially : covering (as of metal) used in combat
2: a quality or circumstance that affords protection
3: a protective outer layer (as of a ship, a plant or animal, or a cable)
4: armored forces and vehicles (as tanks)
info from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/armor

so you became the lovebunny today, whiterabbit. thanks for the fun you put in my day today.

Well, ignoring the rights and wrongs of giving away games only at weekends or using Swastikas "in this day and age", I've started to play this game (as I like old-fashioned throwbacks) but can't seem to get my tank to fire. I can move all over the map - and the controls are a little clunky as mentioned previously - but neither the ctrl nor the ins keys appears to do anything. Is it because I'm using a laptop (can't think why this would be the case - the keys work everywhere else).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I love retro games, simple and amusing.

Some may find the controls clunky, but they are just not used to the odd combo of 8 way control and a 4 way maze which you can blast to give angled shots.

Love the music!

REF: 16-slickman65, 15-Mike Rowe, 24-Einhander . et al,
A mis-quote from 24-Einhander, but fits:
""I will say it for the last time: put yourself of your own misery, Go away and NEVER come back!! ""

The arrogance and hubris that oozes from those that want software tailored for them ---free--and if not accommodated ,want the site shut down ....on a demand from some 'full of self' ....'one in 7 billion humans on earth', feels that he/she has the .......! end rant.
There are many retail stores that will cater to your needs - Go there please.

I download maybe one of 10 offerings on the GOTD sites. I have bought a few and intend to buy Evernote when my MS-Windows OS does it's quarterly crash; I lose all GOTD stuff, of course - but I will usually have found out if I like and use the program. I will then buy it.
This is not my type of game. I prefer breakout style games and have bought a few because of GOTD. I listen to a lot of AudioBooks. If I am listening while at my computer, I play these games to be doing something rather mindless to take me through the slow bits. Actually keeps me ontrack as to the book. (bit of ADD, ya know)

Thanks, GOTD for your offerings.

“Giveaway of the Day - June 22, Enemy At The Gates”

Um, isn’t today May 10th????? New games only on the weekends and they still have to rerun old games? If this is the case, GAOTD you might as well shut down the game section for good.
------------------------------------
"June 22" is part of the title of the game, as in "June 22, Enemy at the Gates", not the date it was last offered here. If you had downloaded the game you would have noticed.

Now, mike's rant aside; I have to agree on his point. With the games given away on weekends only, we would expect better quality games. The game side of this project has gone downhill fast. :(

I tried burning this game to CD for use on my grandson's(Win 98-no internet connection) computer but got an error message when I tried to run it. (error-unable to create 3D scene) Too bad, this would have been a good one for him to hone his eye/hand coordination. Oh, well, looking forward to tomorrow's game.

I said I had given up on GGAOTD while ago but checked back in today because I had been without internet access for over a month and wanted to see if any changes had been made. NOPE. The games offered come about once a month and they are incredibly poor offerings compared to what we got in the past. I will say it for the last time: put yourselves out of your own misery, GGAOTD and shut this site down.

I'm sorry some of you 'old timers' are disappointed with the recent games offered. Some of us are newer to this site and appreciate the fact that some games are being 're-offered'. Yes, sometimes I choose NOT to download a game or two because it doesn't suit me but I don't complain about it. These games are FREE, for cryin' out loud! Beggars can't be choosers. If you think you've exhausted their library of free games that you like or want, move on, but don't spoil it for the rest of us.

I'm probably going to download this one, just to try it. I don't usually like 'shoot 'em up' style games but am willing to try it.

#15 & 16....Ya know some of us happen to like GOTD and GGOTD. We appreciate what they do for us FOR FREE and don't want them to shut down. If you don't like them just leave, no one's making you come here. This isn't my kind of game and I'm not downloading it, but tomorrow might just be a game I love (of which I have gotten many here already), so I'll politely wait till then. But I won't put these guys down for what they try to do or tell them to "shut down". Sorry but those comments just irritated me.

Thanks GGOTD guys. Since tomorrow is Mother's Day how about one for the ladies???

i enjoy small tank games - whatever...
i'm a bit afraid of those old times - cold war and that crap.
but i have no problems with the german past - only those have,
who are too stupid to work on that and that are in most cases
little stupid kiddies... krauts, bratwust, tommy, ami is long
ago - we dont need racism neither in games nor anywhere.
people who drop n-words should have a look in their own past

I don't rated it.
We are mid-2008 so please present us games from 2008.
If you want to do a retro-week that is ok, but inform us.
I use computers since 1979 and this game is SF for the 79
boys, but crap for the 1999 boys...
Also GAOTD is BAD informed about prices.
I hope it is an ERROR and SHOULD be corrected !
Please inform your sources before publishing.

Looks like no effort whatsoever goes into deciding what games are uploaded. Should pull the plug on this site now. Let us remember how great this site used to be...now it is a joke. (From the looks of things Giveawayoftheday.com isn't far behind either). The games and software that's "offered" here is 95% garbage. No one in their right mind would download these obsolete titles. How can ANYONE give thanks to the trash that's dumped here?? I no longer give thanks for this site...just as they no longer give any effort.
Sad day for all of us that LOVED these sites :(

Cute little game. Has a decent map editor. Just a little too easy for me, but good enough if you need to pass the time.

The listed price of this game is exaggerated, as it is available for 9.99, full version, at ZDNet.com.

Please note that if you change any settings, you must re-start the program for the new settings to take effect.

Also note that if you insert the activation code via the registration in the game, you must re-start the program for it to take effect.

This games runs okay on my Windows VISTA Basic. However, the Map Editor, which is a definite plus for this game, gives me a "Memory Access Violation" error when I try to run it.

The Game:

June 22nd: Enemy at the gates looks remarkably like battle rush that was given away just over a year ago, though I couldn’t swear to it now as I deleted the game due to having Tanks Evolution that was also given away a few months ago, which (IMO) is a much better version of this game. If you’re interested, check out the link to Tank Commander below; it’s one of those games from Gametop.com. If you don’t already know, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that it is the very same game as Tanks Evolution.

Today’s game has very basic graphics, the controls are clunky and the levels have very little variation in them apart from the color of the blocks. The one redeeming factor with this game is that you get a levels editor so you are able to create as many extra levels as you wish. You get 30 classic levels and 50 new missions plus as many new level’s as you care to make. These can be accessed from the games start menu. There is a separate shortcut for the map editor.

From the options menu you can select your screen resolution from several choices ranging from 720x576x16 to 1680x1050x32. There’s a toggle to set the game in windowed mode plus an additional mode called scaled that enables you to set the windowed mode to a size similar to a flash game, ie very small. There are three view modes from 2D to two 3D views as well as a gamma correction slider and music and sound controls.

Once you’ve selected new game from the main menu you can select either a one or two player game, where you play in coop mode. That is, you both fight off the enemy tanks, cooperating with each other. Accidentally shooting your buddy has no effect

There are four types of tank to destroy each one worth a different amount of points. These are: Light Tank (100 points), Tank Destroyer (200 points), Heavy Tank (300 points) and Assault Tank (500 points) The higher the point value, the harder it is to destroy the tank. In game there is little to distinguish between the tanks apart from their difference in size though checking the help file . As you progress through the levels you are awarded promotions, the first promotion is at the end of level one and isn’t actually dependent upon you score. The next rank is master sergeant; which appears to be score dependent as I held this rank for two levels?

There are in game bonuses that are gained by destroying commander tanks that appear slightly darker than the usual enemy tank. These bonuses include extra life (spanner/wrench), time stands still (clock), destroy all enemy tanks (bomb), a protect the base bonus(concrete block) and an invulnerability bonus(Shield). As well as a tank upgrade (red star that initially upgrades your weapon to a more powerful 85mm cannon that does more damage. A second upgrade will enable you to fire amour piercing rounds that are even more powerful. These are also capable of destroying the concrete barriers. The concrete blocks (betons), shield and clock are time limited and lasts for 30 seconds whereas the weapons upgrades last for as long as your tank survives or until your base is destroyed. It only takes one hit from an enemy tank to destroy you unless you’ve got the invulnerability shield active. Once your three lives are used up that’s the end of the game.

The editor is very easy to work with having only 12 types of block to work with that mainly includes brick and concrete style blocks with what are supposed to emulate trees and which you can hide under as well as barbed wire fencing. The concrete blocks are indestructible. All custom made levels are accessible from the new games menu. There doesn’t appear to be a save game option, but the review was based upon a demo of the game. I wasn’t able to access any of the new levels or test and save custom made levels.
The game is keyboard controlled. It says on the website that the game can also be controlled by a gamepad or a joystick

The aim of the game is to survive each level, protect your home base from being destroyed by the enemy and destroy a specific number of tanks which is indicated next to the number of lives you have left, which starts at three. At the end of each level you are presented with the end of level statistics which include the numbers of each tank you’ve destroyed, the points for each tank, the score for the level and the cumulative score for the game.

Conclusion:

Initially I wasn’t impressed with this game, but that was because of the very basic looking graphics. The actual game play is quite reasonable apart from the controls. I found those to be very clunky and lost loads of tanks due to the inability to turn away from incoming fire, though if you’re lucky enough you can destroy incoming shells from other tanks. Once you’ve got used to the controls though you can have a decent enough game. The variety of power ups is okay. If you wish you can change the music which can be found inside the music folder within the main games folder; though you’ll have to convert the music to the ogg format first, then rename the pieces you want to place in game. There are four files that you can add. I’d give this game 6 out of 10.
