I was playing and loving my new game. When U went to pull it up again I got a message that said 'can't find bass.dll'. How can I fix this?

.............................Moderator Comment...........................

You can get bass.dll from several download sites. Once you've found a copy you'll need to add it to either the games folder or your system 32 folder 9located inside windows folder.
You can get bass.dll from the following link:

http://www.givemefile.net/dll/dll_2439.html

make sure you click on the correct link (just below the red exclamation mark).

running a registry scan/cleanup can sometimes fix the missing bass.dll error message.

Okay so I played this game through. It was excellent until I reached the end. Total playtime, maybe an hour and we still don't know who murdered Mr. Larouche....it seems like it just stopped in the middle.

@ Moderator:
Yawn! 7 Zip or J Zip hahaha Sigh If it's not Winrar pro then forget it opens 99% of all GGOTD & GOTD software need say more, used J & 7 Zips & along came the bugs Winrar maybe 1 or 2 bugs.

......................................Moderator Comment..........................

I think you're missing the point. I usually use Winrar, but i've had problems with it unpacking several games. Whereas 7-Zip unpacked then no problem. I was giving alternatives. Whoever it was who needed help didn't specify which unzipper she had so I was giving advice from my own experience.

Installed ok, but when I open the game to play, it goes to a blank screen and locks up the computer. I can't open the task manager at that point to close the program, and Escape won't even get me out of there. I had to do a hard shut down to restart. Tried twice to open it. Running W7-64 bit. Will just uninstall the program, thanx anyway!!

Using Vista and I have downloaded this at least 3 times, that part is okay its when I go to unzip it and get to the part where you actually can download it into your computer, it seizes up on me. My whole computer seizes up on me as well. I've had to cycle it to restart.

I have tried WinRar, 7-zip and Jzip and always the same problem. GGAOTD has lost me this time.

I've also followed Moderator instructions:
1. I've downloaded archive file at main and mirror links.
2. I've tried to unzip file with 7Zip and JZip.
But I've always the same problem... archive file seem to be corrupted.

J'ai suivi les instructions de la Modération:
1. Téléchargé le fichier archive sur le lien principal et mirroir.
2. Essayé de décompresser avec 7Zip et JZip.
%aos j'ai toujours le même problème... le fichier compressé semble corrompu.

This game isn't working on my win xp. it seems to be downloading and installing correctly but it keeps shutting itself down on my first search screen. Tried uninstalling - nothing available in "add/remove", so I just deleted the folder as suggested above. Doesn't seem to be working correctly, something must be staying behind. When I reinstalled and then restarted the game it still had my profile and started game. HELP. I love HOGs. Any ideas?

Installed and ran without problem on Vista HP. They did make some attempt to blend in the hidden objects with the rest of the objects, by shadowing and coloration. I hate HOG ones that just have all the images laying out in plain sight; this isn't one of them thankfully. You can click through the story screnes quickly, since they aren't narrated. Good offering; it'll kill a few hours. =)

Hi Terri, you can get 7 Zip from the following:

http://www.7-zip.org/

or

J Zip from the following:

http://www.jzip.com/

Either/or really, though I've always used 7 Zip when I've had problems and its never let me down. It's really down to preference. too be honest, I'd only heard of J Zip less than a year ago and have still not tried it.

I tried it, but am so bored with HOGs. I realize that's me, but a junk pile of mostly nonsensical stuff to find seems pointless and I don't enjoy it. I mean...a dinosaur? Coal tongs? These had nothing to do with the game.

That said, I did play the game all the way through, found out whodunit, perhaps (not really clear and also having very little to do with the junk pile searches), and that was it. It pretty much left me with a question of what was going on in this fictional universe...and bam, the game was done. Case closed with a mystery still outstanding, nothing left to do except start over on the same story.

Instructions are pretty crappy. Some of the non-search puzzles weren't self-explanatory even with the "hint" loaded. I played it once through, then again, thinking maybe I didn't do "enough," but yes, I had...after a certain number of screens/scenes, there was nothing more to do, other than the bonus game.

The bonus game: no instructions. I had to figure out what to do myself. I had to play it three times to get it right, it finished, and just like the game, left me with a mystery that can't be solved at all.

I have tried 4 times to download this game (on the desktop and on my laptop) I get a zip folder but when i try and extract I get the message that it is an empty folder! Any ideas on what I should do?

.............................Moderator Comment............................

Firstly try the mirroe download, if that doesn't work use a different file arciver to unzip the file. for example 7Zip or J Zip. Sometimes I've found that my usual winrar comes up with an error message, yet when I use 7Zip it extracts okay. Failing that check out the 16 HOG's that are free from MyPlayCity.

BULLETS - Next to the body in the long shot, yes, they are bullets, but next to the body in the closeup, they are shells in the items list instead. Bullets are most often found in places you might not expect, such as on the stairs.

Nice game, tricky in spots, but only enough to keep it interesting.

....................................Moderator Comment.....................

How so, does it install, or throw up any error messages, or does it just not start up? Try installing the demo of the game andsee if that works If it does reinstall the giveaway version over the demo. You should then be ale to use the shortcut that the demo left behind. Assuming the executable is the same (though it may be called demo, so may not work)

I forgot to mention at the end of my review; if you've not checked the game discussion forums recently you'll find several excellent games posted by Chazzo and myself, there are some excellent open source games available that are as good as their commercial counterparts, for example UFO: Alien Invasion (X-Com series), Zero A.D. an rts that's as good as counterpart game slike the Anno series plus loads more such as the platform game called The Creature or another rts called Commander Stalin. You'll find a 3D Tic-Tac-toe, a monopoly style board game called Hotel Markets or a playable version of Risk. Also Microsoft Games for Windows have a Christmas sale on where you can get big dollar games for 99cents or 75 pence. Todays game is Blacklight: Tangodown a futuristic FPS game.

Check out the game discussion forums for details:

Thanks for the HOG. This type game and jigsaw puzzles are this old geezer's favorites! A good simple game, played through twice, it is a very short game. The objects are clear on old eyes and not extremely difficult to locate. I like that it does not have a dark screen with a flashlight to hunt objects, or that dreaded silhouette type hunt. To me, mini-games and cutscenes are a waste of space and time to get to the hidden object screens, but this is my opinion only. Thanks again for the game!

Wow, thanks for this game! This is a relatively new one, and though it didn't get rave reviews from buyers, it went on my "buy on sale" list. LOL, it doesn't get more on sale than free!

One comment about the short cutscenes and sparse dialog. Many casual gamers complain about "too much" story and dialog in games - especially diehard HOG fans. Those of us who came from adventure/RPG backgrounds to casual gaming see it differently, but we are a minority of the casual market.

The bright side is that enough developers are gently leading casual players into increasingly complex casual adventures and RPGs that we may see more and better casual adventure/RPG games in the future - if a couple of mega-portals don't Walmartize the industry. ;o)

In any case, games like this one are perfect stress relief, or for when you just want to veg and there's nothing on TV!

..............................Moderator comment.......................

Well said Phatkat; got to agree with you there. I recently purchased the latestm in the Luxor series but was horrified to learn that the developers had listened to the complainst of the masses and removed all the little extras like the developing story line, the mini games and the upgradable power ups., basically it's taken a regressive step to the fist and second in the series.

I'll be giving this a try once I can get to my full-sized computer (this netbook doesn't handle HOGs very well).

On a side note, is there a process here for requesting games? There are certain genres I'd like to see more of, and a few that could probably survive less emphasis.

Sorry, hit the wrong key!
Played through and it was a nice HOG. Mini games were interesting. Tip for the lab work, matching colors. When a color is listed twice, right on top of each other, just move to the next one. If you try to hit it twice in a row you will bomb out.
Bullets have already been covered but I must have missed one pile because when the game ended, the bonus was still locked. will try again.
As for the cursor dropping to the bottom, that will happen each time you have several random clicks-which would be when you try to pick up a pile of bullets that are not the right ones. The bullet piles for the bonus are all in the main scenes where the stars show the HO scenes. As stated before, bullets on the list are in the scene as a HO but not counted for the bonus. hope that helps.
I agree the game ended too abruptly but maybe because I didn't find the bonus round; perhaps that has a different or complete solution. Otherwise, a nice little HOG to pass the time.
Thanks so much!

It freezes from time to time: I'm stuck in an inside scene with no sparklings after I picked up the bullets, clicked everywhere but nothing happens.
Other users report the same problem on:

However, I do appreciate you offering a HOG game!

OT: As I'm not English, can someone please tell me why gamehouse.com says their website "provides a free game that you can download and play free forever" but then they ask a monthly subscription fee?

The program installed something and even received activation verification, but the game is not there. I don't know what it installed but it was not the game. (Vista 32). I don't have a good feeling about this.

................................................Moderator Comment................................

Anna did you note where the game was installed too? There is no shortcut installed so you need to watch where the games was installed too (as mentioned in the first post; so that you can then find the executable file to create a shortcut from. The default location is C:\Games\JaneCroft\ Nothing else could be installed from the downloaded file that you got.

AllinGoodFun,

I wonder about those proxy server settings. This has been a problem for GOTD users before. Many donwload services struggle with proxy servers. I assume you're at a university (or maybe at work ;) ) or in some other institutional setting. You sound like you've got some idea what you're doing, but I mention it because we've had users at home who've had their browser set to connect through a proxy server when they didn't need to be. They weren't able to connect to the activation service until they switched from connecting through a proxy server and set their browsers to connect directly to the internet. Rarely, if ever, are people behind a proxy server at home. In fact, in most of those cases where it was unintentionally on, they usually didn't realize that function was even selected in their options, though that obviously doesn't apply in your case.

I imagine this won't help, because you sound like your on top of it, but the proxy settings could still be a problem. Perhaps you should contact the server's administrator. Finding the right settings for nearly universal web connectivity can be quite tricky.

Good luck.

You don't need any uninstaller. The game is free-standing/portable. Just delete the folder of the game.

I have no problems with the game, it's running fine.
Nothing special - just one more HOG, not the best, not the worst, just okay. Pretty much as the review in gamezebo describes it.

Thanks RVL games and GGOTD.

Installed OK on Win 7 X64. Seems like decent example of the genre. It is to be noted that HOG's are not the same as adventures with clues and puzzles to solve, as in Myst. The game is like those Sunday comic strip supplements in which you find the objects in the picture. Puzzle lovers may not be satisfied.

In case it's of interest or helpful to anyone, noticed that installing/running this game is a bit different from many (most?) games using the WinRAR self-extractor to unpack the game files in the desired folder...

One, cached audio files are stored under All Users App/Application Data [vista/7 vs. XP].

Two, it uses the registry [HKCU\Software \RVLGames \JaneCroft] to store things like ScreenMode & Wait for VSync -- if/when the game won't run properly, *After Backing Up at least the registry* editing one or more of those settings might help make it playable.

Three, I normally monitor these game installs before adding them to my wife's PC [I keep the info in case I later uninstall if she doesn't like one]... This is the 1st game in a while that actually ran in the VM [Virtual Machine] I used to do the monitoring. Normally the lack of hardware DX support prevents them from starting at all. If you've got a lower powered PC/laptop, or want to run a game in a Windows VM, this might be a good choice.

My screen resolution 1920 x 1200 pixels and HP w2408h . software is (Multiple Monitors) on NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT Visa Home Version. Flat screen.
Already try that lower screen resolution and doesn't work , it must be software itself to check it. Around the World in 80 Days, Atlantis Quest,Brickshooter Egypt,King’s Smith work fine

This is a fairly recent HOG, but in the same old boiler plate. Junk pile scenes, with not really very well hidden objects. And definitely things that don't belong. What's the Eiffel tower doing laying on a street in London? The scenes are also very dark and grainy (but being Noire I guess that's ok) It has the added items like picking up so many bullets gives you bonus game play. If you like standard HOGS, you'll like this one. I prefer HOGA's (w/ adventure element), so really got bored quickly just jumping from Hidden object scene to Hidden Object scene.
Very nice that it was free, and thanks GGAOTD for this one, but I probably will not finish it.

Would have like this game as I hidden object games, but I will uninstall this game, it is to buggy for me. I think I got to about the 6th screen before it stopped and it wouldn't go any further. Before that it would get stuck and I had to click on the menu before I could proceed.
Well, I decided to give it another chance, it still is buggy, but at least now I have gotten further. I would never buy this game unless the bugs were fixed. As soon as I get through it, I will uninstall it!

This hidden object is a nice game, but very short. Thinking I was still in the middle of the game it suddenly ended. Case solved.
That made the end a bit disappointing. I still don't know who did it ;-)
The supposed killer was found dead in his bed together with a very recent torn picture of him and a detective that has been dead for more than 6 months :-S

I'm afraid I don't understand the solution :-)
