Best thing about it was the online mode. The "easy kids mode" was waaaaaaay too hard for kids. The very best chess game/chess learning tool out there is Majestic Chess. Unfortunately it is not free, but worth buying imo. Your children will actually enjoy playing it too (but later on it gets much more difficult to cater to experienced players).

Thanks niteraven; though you do yourself an injustice I personally have found your comments incisive and to the point and interesting to read. I do hope you continue as it’s always great to read several view points on any game.

Earlier, I posted a comment about the fact that GMChess3 froze after one or two moves when I played it on my laptop, but ran OK on my wife's. I played a few games on my wife's laptop. The "Quick hint" (your "best" reply to the computer's move highlighted in green) is on by default. Following these hints sometimes (but not always), I lost at the "Easy adult" level. The more I followed the hints, the more quickly I lost. I found how to turn off these hints and played again. Having just lost a rook through a stupid mistake, I clicked "UNDO" (which had previously worked), but there was no response. I then saw that, although it was in a clear winning position, the computer had resigned. (I had turned off the annoying voice and sound effects.) GMChess3 also froze at this point, and no buttons would respond.

Nice, except that it's buggy! It said "Game over" after I simply took one of the opponent's pieces. So I did "undo" and repeated the same move. "Game Over". No kings were even in check and it was only about 20 moves into the game. I did "undo" and tried a different move. My pawn c2 to c4. Opponent's pawn at b4 moved to the empty space at c3 and TOOK my pawn at c4! Buggy! Not worth playing!

Downloaded GMChess3 and told it to install in C:\Program Files\Games (not the default). No problem with this, nor with creating a shortcut to the application program. Fired it up and told computer to take white. After one move on each side, GMChess3 froze, and I had to Ctrl-Alt-Del and kill the process. On a second attempt, it froze half way through white's (computer's) first move. It works fine on my wife's computer. I run XP Home; she runs XP Pro. Any suggestions?
