Elementals: The Magic Key

At first I thought this was going to be cheesy, but I gave it a try and ended up having a great time playing this game.

FUN / CHALLENGE
As another reviewer said, Elementals is more adventure than HO. Hidden object is just one among many types of puzzles. Unusual ones included a type of chess (easy to learn, difficult to master!), solitaire, and magic spells (à la Harry Potter). A lot of the hidden object scenes are for fragmented objects. There are no visual clues. Until you locate the first piece, you don't know what they look like or how many pieces there are. No instructions are given about how to solve a puzzle unless you click the hint button. I liked those added challenges. I appreciated that there was no timer, so I could take my time without unwanted hints from sparkles or glowy things.

The Bonus button on the main menu allows you to replay any of the puzzles and battles.

There are prompts sort of like sticky notes to remind you of the current task. With all the interruptions I have, I found them helpful, but they might make others feel coddled.

The level of challenge was good. The puzzles required some fiddling to figure out what to do, but nothing too frustrating. As the chess games became progressively harder, I had to replay some of them to win. There seems to be a quantum leap in difficulty at the last boss level. That's when I got well and truly stuck. A change of tactic—the whole point of a strategy game—solved the problem. It was gratifying when I finally prevailed.

VISUAL / SOUND
I think the graphic style is beautiful. However, I didn't like the depiction of the humans (especially Sibelius) or sidekick Felly. They seemed cartoonish compared to the scenery and other characters.

Much of the music is peaceful and pleasant, though it became louder and dramatic in sync with the storyline. I liked the music—and it did get stuck in my head for a few days—but I won't be adding it to any playlists. Ongoing sound effects like clicking stones and rattling gears became distracting at times, but I treated that as part of the challenge.

STORYLINE
The storyline is kind of rote: Faced with a challenge, you have to fix something by going through a series of steps for each piece of the puzzle. I didn't mind though. I thought it was developed well and the puzzles dovetailed nicely with it. I like the lighthearted approach and the way the magical theme and elementals are incorporated.

SUGGESTION
The one thing I would change is that your progress is not necessarily saved right where you leave off. I think it's saved at the beginning of the most recent scene that was loaded with a progress bar.

It took me three days to beat the big boss level at the end. Each time I reloaded the game, I had to repeat the puzzle that leads to the boss level. I spent way too much time figuring it out again and again (completist that I am, I refused to skip it). I took a screen shot of the solution in case I ever get stuck again. When I finally beat the boss level, I was afraid to stop playing to avoid risking losing my progress. My cat had to wait (im)patiently for dinner while I finished the game.

OVERALL
I highly recommend this game. I would suggest trying the demo before buying to make sure you'll like the types of puzzles. HO is just a small piece of the puzzle.

have played this before but am happy to see it again. Lots of stopping to load but there are fun graphics each time that make the time pass a little faster. Don't think there's a skip option on all the games? So far haven't needed it but nice to have! I am older and some of the hidden objects are quite small but it's not too bad. In another ten years, I'll need a little kid to help me!

Hi!

Thanks for another good game!!! It loaded easily and runs good, except for a pull. Think it is loaded with heavy graphics etc. making switch between rooms longer or should say feel its using resources more and making other things on computer slow like the web, but otherwise its a good game! The graphics are great! It does make you look to find things without that much info at times, which makes one think! don't like them too easy!

I've only played two rooms and now off to the library!

I had gotten this the last time and lost it when I bought a new hard drive. I hated losing it so much that I bought it! This game has excellent graphics, varied and challenging games and a great story line. If you've not gotten it already and are just comment surfing, go download it.

I am really of two minds of this game. It is the kind of Hidden Object I like - puzzle ones, where I'm not simply searching for a list of objects in strange backgrounds. There's a story, the puzzles are fun, and I like the "battles".

That said...

It's... slow. The graphics are slow, and I don't mean slow to load, I mean that the special effects are meant to be special and drawn out to ooo and ahhh over and really? They aren't that much. It is a pretty game, but a tree waving its branches in the same movements with green glows as it casts a spell gets rather tedious the second or third long time around.

I can't stand little critters that guide the main character along so much that they have every single answer to every single question leaving little for the main character to figure out. If the little critter knows so much, why isn't IT the main character?

And there's a tiny glitch in the music that freezes at the end of its cycle before it begins again. It's only a second long, but it catches the game too and I keep thinking that the game is starting to lock up and it breaks the rhythm for me.

I guess I just expect more from a Playrex game, and I know this is a repeat giveaway and a game that has been around for a long time. I guess I'm not really sure why we get games that have been released from years back - just about everything that I could say about them has probably already been said. But I do love Playrex games, so I'm always happy to see them.

I have downloaded it twice and both times I get an error message when I try to unzip the dnld saying that the zip file is invalid. When I use the "Extract all..." option, Windows tells me that the zip is empty. However, when I get the Properties on the zip file, it tells me that it is a full 102MB (107,459,092 bytes) in size.

I have never had this problem with a GGAOTD file before. I would really like to try this game. I have never had any trouble with Playrix games... I don't understand it.

I hope someone can help. Until then, I suppose I will be "insane" by Einstein's definition and continue trying the same thing, hoping for a different outcome!

I've had this problem a couple of times with files from other places. I found using a different file archiver worked. check the FAQ's i've linked to in my reiew. too late to install today. you can get the game from Jenkat Games for free 24/7

Like many here I downloaded, installed, and played this on a previous giveaway and enjoyed it very much. I still have it installed so I won't download it this time. But, because I've been experiencing some serious issues with my current machine (XP) I will be getting a new (7) machine in the coming weeks. And when this is offered again I will definitely download and install it.

I found a version of this as an online game quite awhile ago (have no clue where, sorry) and I could not get past the first room (online vs had no hints or help)so I gave up. Happy to see this full version avail from you! Now, hopefully, I can play on. I really was disappointed that I couldn't play it before as it looks like a VERY enjoyable game. :-D

Game was good. I am not particularly fond of games to read directions all the way through. I did enjoy the games within the games, except for the chess knock off. Never got it. Will only play once and now uninstalling. Did not hold my interest or replayability like Fishdom did. But thanks for a few hours of entertainment on a rainy sunday morning.

Am I misunderstanding what you said about this being a series. I clicked on the First link and the THIRD link but they were different games. I looked up Elementals and it only showed this one. Does the First and Third have entirely different names? If so would you let us know what they are. I love this game last time offered but when I got to the gates I opened them and decided to quite for the night. Next day it opened at the gate (now closed and only partially completed and would not let me find the last four items. Never got to finish game. Is there something I should know as to when you can exit game and be able to go back to finish it? Thank you for any help provided....Unruly

My fault. I didn't check the links. They were referring to a previous giveaway Sky Taxi, not Magic Key 2. sorry aobut that.

Agree with #6, I suck at strategy stuff, mostly because I am trying to turn my brain off when playing a game and you have to THINK to use strategy! LOL....BTW those PlayCity Links that you posted take you to a game called AirTaxi. I was hoping to pick up the other 2 games, I have this one. Off to search!

..........................Moderator comment..................................

Thanks for letting me know. I used the same links from the previous giveaway; realized when I went to check them a few moments ago that they were actually for a previous giveaway (Sky Taxi 1,2 and 3) sorry about that. I'm not 100% from my illness, so cut corners with my review.

The Jenkat link is the better one to use as you don't get the same issues (toolbars etc).

I got this game a few years ago and played it through. I don't remember any specifics, but it was a very enjoyable game for me. The strategy games got a little stressful as you progressed, but they are still very playable. I am not the greatest strategy player myself, but I found by watching the opponents moves I could better predict what their actions/reactions would be. I have a new computer now, so will download it again. I'm looking forward to playing this little game again. Thanks GGOTD!

I downloaded this the last time it was offered and have played it several times since then. It's visually a most attractive game and I've enjoyed the HOGs and mini-games. There is quite a bit of humour in it as well, which makes a pleasant change from so many darker games that are around.

Although I've played it several times I still can't get past the first few battles as my strategy just isn't good enough. That isn't a criticism of the game, more a criticism of me (!!) but I've been very glad that it's a game where I can skip the battles that are just too tricky (so far...).

Thank you GAOTD and Playrix for some hours' good entertainment.

Have downloaded this game before. Thumbs up for me.

I lose almost all the strategy battles, so that's not my favorite part of the game but I think most people will enjoy the challenge and uniqueness of the battles. I had to skip all the later battles, which is a great option for those of us who are not good at strategy.

Loved the graphics and the mini and card games against the totems. This game has games for all abilities.

The HO scenes are pretty easy but I didn't mind because the game is story driven and the scenes are all beautiful.

Good morning;
Thought I would ask why the verification process through giveawayoftheday is no longer working after installation of anything that I might download and install. It happened again this morning after installing this game on my Win7Pro 64. I have not had trouble with anything including the programs given away until about a month ago. It happened with Sticky Linky last week. So I am not sure now if that and this game have been authorized or whatever by giveaway.
Any info on this? The game has been installed and I can play them.
But during installation process authorizing does not work as Windows says it has failed and will now close. I did attempt to check out the reason why Windows fails and it claims something about privacy statement. Any help would be appreciated and thanks. Hope you have recovered fully!

.......................Moderator Comment.............................

Maybe your windows settings or security software is causing the issue. Try checking the event viewer after trying to install again. The messages there may give you a clue as to what is causing this problem. If there are no messages, try changing permissions. Hopefully someone from the community may be able to suggest something. :)

In Brief:

The game is made up of a series of simple interactive hidden object adventures interspersed with mini games that break the game up into bite sized chunks. The most interesting game I found was the chess like battles between elementals. It’s really nothing like chess, but it does require an element of strategy to win against your opponents As you progress through the game this particular mini game becomes a little more complex with additional elementals and spells coming into play that can cause a lot more damage as well as require new tactics.

This is the same version as previously given away (v1.2.1.235)

Elementals: The Magic Key was first given away 8th May 2011 where it received a positive 80% of the votes from 448 votes, with 114 comments which you can read HERE. It was given away later the same year (Dec 10th 2011) where it received a positive 79% from 440 votes with 73 comments which you can read HERE. It was also given away 9th February last year, where it received a positive 81% out of 350 votes, with 37 comments which can be read HERE

Installation:

Elements: The Magic Key downloads to a 102 MB zip file that unpacks that unpacks to a read me and a wrapped setup activation file (the orange colored file with the key symbol), plus there's a setup file with security (setup.gcd) that's protected from being hacked. This file may case some security software to alert the user to a possible malware attack, but it will be a false positive.

The game giveaway team check all game giveaways for malware using several well known anti -malware suites. There has never been a game giveaway infected with malware since the project started back in Dec 2006. The installed game is 59.8 MB in size.

The game installs to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Playrix Entertainment\Elementals - The Magic Key

or

C:\Program Files\Playrix Entertainment\Elementals - The Magic (if you have a 32 bit system)

You can easily change this path during the installation wizard. There is a shortcut installed to the desktop and to the Start Menu/Programs list/folder. You’ll find it listed under Playrix Entertainment\Elementals - The Magic Key. There is also a shortcut placed on the desktop to Playrix’s site. This can be deleted without harm to the game. The installed game is 108Mb in size.

I originally tested the game on Win XP Pro SP3 32 bit, Vista Home Premium 64 bit, Win 7 Pro and Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit installations and the game worked on all platforms. If you don’t like the in game music unfortunately unless you are adept at editing data files there is no way of changing the music.

This game is available free 24/7 from MyPlayCity, Jenkat Games and Gametop 24/7, however, you will have to make sure you uncheck the boxes during installation, otherwise you'll find your home page changed, toolbars installed and your search engine changed. Jenkat Games is the best one to download from.

The game is made up of a series of simple interactive hidden object adventures interspersed with mini games that break the game up into bite sized chunks. The most interesting game I found was the chess like battles between elementals. It’s really nothing like chess, but it does require an element of strategy to win against your opponents As you progress through the game this particular mini game becomes a little more complex with additional elementals and spells coming into play that can cause a lot more damage as well as require new tactics, for example, early on in the game you are introduced to a simple tactic for beating your opponent, where you can combine three elementals to create a stronger elemental, but so can your opponent, so take care when playing this game. All tactics are introduced via a simple tutorial. I lost the second battle I was involved in and had to start again, lol. There are also spot the difference puzzles and to proceed at some points you have to interact with the environment by finding objects and using them, for example finding a key to unlock a drawer or cupboard, then rifling through the drawer/cupboard via a hidden object mini game (that’s much too simple) to find another object that will let you progress or by creating objects to complete a quest by drawing items with a wand and then assembling the parts. I’ve not played the game enough to discover more mini games so if anyone plays this for an extended period today please do post details of the various mini games that you find; thank you. There appears to be 32 mini games and 21 battles to win from the battles/puzzle pages, but I think many of the puzzles are repeated and the battles all revolve around the chequered board.

Elementals 020

Elementals 021

The game is very colourful and beautifully rendered. I was immediately impressed with the introduction and story line to this game though I did find it was a little too easy. This was in part due to the abundant clues and no time limit, you can take the game as slowly or fast as you like. There’s also a helpful hint button when you are playing the hidden object elements of the game that recharges quite fast. I’ve posted over 70 in game screen captures showing how gorgeous this game is and there are several videos to explore that will show you most elements found within the game.

You can replay all of your favourite mini games once they have been unlocked in the story mode. And once you’ve completed the game you can replay it with different characters by selecting bonuses from the main menu then select new battles.

The options menu has three sound controllers, Music, Effects and Environment. They are set to maximum by default.

Elementals 022

Elementals 025

Once you’ve created a profile the game starts with an introductory story, that carries on throughout the game, with frequent dialogue throughout. I did find that the dialogue disappeared before I’d finished reading it sometimes which spoiled the effect a little, but it wasn’t a major concern because you still got the gist of the story. It was easy enough to fill the blanks. All dialogue can be skipped by clicking on the skip button located in the bottom left of the game screen. The story introduces the characters and a magical artefact called the great key of Eiron that supposedly binds and balances all the elements of the imaginary world together as well as giving the holder of the key great powers. This key has gone missing and in fact has been shattered and the shards scattered throughout the game. Part of your quest, apart from rescuing your sister with the aid of a weird blue blobby creature called Felly is to recover these shards before evil forces recover them because the key as already mentioned confers great powers on the holder.

Elementals 030

Elementals 031

Conclusion:

This is an excellent game that looks like it's for the kids, but there's an underlying difficulty inherent in the game via the chess like strategy game that you play as part of the battle sections of the game. the mini games that I played were pretty simple and standard mini game fare, but they do add to the overall game. The hidden object elements were much too easy for my liking. There was ample hints and the hint button recharged fairly fast. I'd say this is an ideal family game that'll keep you entertained on a cold and wet weekend afternoon. It's well worth a score of 8 out of 10 IMO, with a 9 for graphics, 7 for game play, and 8 for sounds and music which are appropriate to the game play. Thank you Playrix and The game giveaway team for bringing us an excellent game this weekend

Elementals 032

Elementals 033

Suggestions for the developer:

The game could do with difficulty settings that include much harder levels. Include a timed mode as well as an arcade mode where you can choose to play any part of the game once you've completed it rather than having to wait until you've completed the whole story mode. I'd also add achievements in the form of awards; you could categorise these into Gold, Silver and Bronze etc.

Problems:

If you are posting late in the day I would also suggest posting in the main giveaway forums in the game discussion section. If you’ve installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn’t guaranteed).

If you have any problems installing or getting to work today's game please go HERE for help.

It’s always worth checking out the free games sites as sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them. MyPlayCity has the most with over 600 games to choose from. Today's game IS available from MyPlayCity HERE. It's also available from Jenkat Games.

If you're looking for something other than today's game check the didimatic site via THIS link for some brilliant deals.

My favorite site for game deals is Steam, the main reason being they have a brilliant community that's easily accessed via the free Steam client, daily deals usually with between 50 to 75% off, plus they have weekend deals (often with the oppertunity to play at least one of the deals for free all weekend before you decided to purchase, mid week deals and now they have a weekly sale that starts every monday, with games as much as 90% off. Every month they seem to have developer sales, wwhere the entire catalogue of games for that particular developer is put up for sale.

Check out the Game discussion forums HERE for details of any Indie Game Bundles that are still live. At the moment there's several Bundle Stars bundles, all with Steam keys, there's a new Idie Royale bundle, weekly Humble Bundkles, and a couple of indie Gala Bundles. also check out the Flying bundle.
These bundles give you the opportunity to get a lot of great games for almost nothing (the price of a cappuccino at your local coffee shop in most cases)

The latest game from Indie GameStand (they have a new indie game every four days) is
a game called Cube & Star: An Arbitrary Love
. You can get the game for $1 minimum or, if you want extra's (todays's extra's include the warped edition of the game), pay the average price, which, at the moment stands at just over $1.82. You get aSteam key and a drm free download link.

With respect to my links to MyPlayCity and Gamtop. Please be aware that these sites may add toolbars and home page hijacks to your web browser, but these can be avoided by un-checking the appropriate boxes during installation. Also when you close any of their games down, your browser is opened and directed to the sites home page. This is innocuous so don’t worry. Closing the page ends any connection and nothing is downloaded.

A Request for helpl>:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

Regards

Whiterabbit aka Stephen
