A virtual drive is a file that pretends to be a hard drive -- lots of uses, but if you don't know about them already you likely wouldn't benefit from creating/using one. A VM [Virtual Machine] is Windows or some other OS [Operating System] installed to a virtual host app -- that virtual host [e.g. VirtualBox] pretends to be a separate PC. The Guest OS running in the VM is installed on a virtual drive -- restoring that OS [after installing software or in case you have a problem] is as simple as replacing the virtual disk file it's installed on with a copy of the original.
