One annoyance I noticed with this program is that if you toggle the background music off then minimize the program to the tray, the music sometimes is turned on when you restore the program window...

Bigfish is running a sale with code code NEW50. I was able to buy Driftcube from them for $5... I lost the gamegiveawayoftheday registration due to a hard drive corruption...

Mod,
You are correct. I previously posted the video solutions on youtube for CubeDrift in March and May 2011. I posted levels 90 - 100 in March and levels 25 - 89 in May. Then when the game was released as the Game Giveaway of the Day in July, I went back and posted the video solutions for levels 1-25 so they would be complete. Since whiterabbit's comment includes links to my videos I wanted to make sure that all 100 levels are available on youtube.

I love this game! I hope everyone has as much fun as I do playing it.

Thank you for taking the trouble to post all level slutions. It must have taken you quite some time. :)

I went ahead and posted all 100 video solutions on youtube. Just do a search on youtube for CubeDrift and the level you want to see.

Happy gaming!

Thanks Lizzie. Though most of the solutions had already been posted previously.

I thought I had posted solutions for all the levels but I started with level 25 and posted through level 100. Here is a link to Level 25. When you find it you can just do a youtube search for the other levels.

CubeDrift Level 25 solution

The links that whiterabbit posted in the introduction to the game are the links to my videos.

Have fun!

The game is ok but i wont download it, it's a game I can "make" in 30 minutes (max.) work with GameMaker(and I'm not pro with it), so I think (I dont find other words) it's useless to share it(not realy "useless" but as i said i find no other word for that).
Hope better games will be shared, but thank you for sharing it.

Hi Damon, wow that's pretty impressive; maybe you should knock some games together and offer them on the game giveaway site. The owners do pay. :) It would have been too late to download now anyway. The giveaway only lasts for 24 hours.

@70, yeah do reinstall the game. If you don't have the original package, grab it from http://www.dextrogames.com/games.php. The registration should keep, as I can't find anything in the package that would reset it.

On the 11th at GOTD, Whiterabbit wrote,
"If you downloaded Saturdays gamegiveaway CubeDrift – it was though that there was no save feature. It seems the game was packaged with profile data already included which had unlocked all of the levels. GMMan discovered that if you delete a specific file from the data folder the game will then save where you left off, and will also indicate which levels have been unlocked. Most levels are locked until you unlock then, although every 10 to 12 levels a number of un-played levels will unlock so that you have a small selection of un-played levels to choose from. You can read GMMan’s information in the comments section of the gamegiveaway for this Saturday. I wont post the link just in case the post then gets thrown to the spam folder.

Here’s what GMMan wrote:

Actually, CubeDrift does have a “save” function. It will indicate what levels you’ve finished on the level select screen (as gIndiana Jones and the Temple of Zombies
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Zombiesold). You can skip up to 10 levels (available ones are in blue). After those ones they are all locked (in grey). The game will actually resume on the first level you did not complete.

The only reason that non of the above worked was because the game shipped with a completed profile. Just delete data\ogpice.cdx to reset the profile.

The .cdx format is simple. It’s in a key/value format. Each level is numbered and takes up two lines. The first line is the level number, and the second is the level completion state (either “u” for unfinished, or “d” for done). Repeat for each level in the level pack. The file is automatically generated upon starting a level pack.

Thank you GMMan

When I implemented GMMan’s fix it worked perfectly and functioned as you’d expect a game to work with a proper save feature."
-------------------------------------------------------------
Could you elaborate on that or ask the publisher to repeat a fixed version?

Thanks!

...................Moderator Comment................

Hi Damon

You just need to open up the games installed folder and remove the file ogpice.cdx that you'll find in the data folder

Good evening WHITE RABBIT!

Thanks ever so much for leaving the update on the main GOTD site today. I just wanted you to know that you ARE appreciated. I did not bother to post this on the main site because the moderation there is schizo. My important comments are usually never posted and my pasès comments always are over there. In striking contrast, your moderation is first class!

I do not know if any other person gave you some feedback, but I thought I would let you know that your helpfulness is great.

I wish you could somehow moderate both sites! A bit of wishful thinking perhaps. Cheers.

@Whiterabbit (70): No, .NET Framework isn't required because this was from VB6, which has its own runtime module and doesn't require .NET Framework to run.

Thank you for the replies.
Here is the snapshot: http://www.picdepict.com/images/31648326270659301347.png.
I can neither open the editor from the game nor manually, because the lever editor is not installed at all, although installation went fine and the activation was successful.

....................Moderator Comment.....................

Hi Marge, try downloading the demo from the developers site (you can find the link above). Don't uninstall the version you have now otherwise you'll lose the registration. Reinstall the demo. It will automatically become registered when you boot the game up. Hopefully that will cure the problem. If it doesn't make sure you have .net framework installed. You can download the latest version from microsoft. The game requires .net framework as well as Visual basic to be able to edit the game using the editor. If you don't have net framework installed it could be the reason why it's not working. Please let me know. thanks.

I'll check back in a few days..

We do have games next weekend, so if I forget, I'll see your reply on Saturday next week. :)

I have a complaint about this Game Giveaway. I was ONLINE most of yesterday (July 9) until the wee hours of the morning on July 10...and I did NOT receive the link to this game until around noon today which is still July 10 for another couple hours at least. When I clicked on the link in the email, of course it said it was good for only yesterday. So how come I never got the link till almost 12 hours AFTER it expired??!! This has happened before with both the Game Giveaway and the Software Giveaway...AND I actively have my email open on one of my tabs in my browser all day so that I can be notified of new emails.

..........Moderator Comment...............

this has been a problem ever since the giveaway team introduced the Email notificatiuon system. The best way to find out is to visit the game giveaway page each weekend to see if there is a game rather than relying upon the email notification.

I think this problem arises due to the sheer numbers of downloads that occur over the giveaway period. for example, this Saturdays game was downloaded over 10 000 times, which really loads the servers.

sorry that you've missed this game. I can tell you that there are four games listed in the to post list, so expect some games over the next few weekends. :)

@60: Do try reinstalling. If you're launching the editor from the game, it might do that. You can launch it manually by going to the game's program folder and clicking on LevelEditor.exe (the icon has four frosty colour regions and a big "E" in the middle).

Actually, CubeDrift does have a "save" function. It will indicate what levels you've finished on the level select screen (as gold). You can skip up to 10 levels (available ones are in blue). After those ones they are all locked (in grey). The game will actually resume on the first level you did not complete.

The only reason that non of the above worked was because the game shipped with a completed profile. Just delete data\ogpice.cdx to reset the profile.

Downloaded this one as I love Sokoban type puzzlers. Have only gotten to level 15 so not sure how the colouring will affect me later on - I do have trouble subtle hues apart. Blue vs green >.<

A counter for the number of moves you've made to finish a level would be useful:
1) It's fun to try to beat these things in as few moves as possible. 2) As this one is not so difficult, beating your previous moves number would add some additional replay value.

The level is simple to use and it's easy to retrieve saved game. Haven't tested whether importing works.

Really liking the game so far. Thanks for the review as always, Mr. Whiterabbit, GAoTD and to the developer for the offering.

I've installed VB, but the level editor does not work. When trying to launch it: "Could not find editor, reinstall please."
I did so yesterday, but it still won't work.

....................Moderator comment.....................

sorry for the late reply. I cannot explain why the editor doesn't work for you Marge? It may be something else that's missing from your computer, or the way it is set up. No one else posted to say they couldn't get it working. When you click on the editor button does it open up at all? and if it does what do you see?

to use the editor you click on the various blocks that you can see along the top of the game area just below the file, edit, level and help tool bar.

If possible send me a screen shot of what you are getting. You'll need to upload to a site such as http:/www.picdepict.com which is a free site, then send me the link. If you select the lowest link in the list that you get once the image has been uploaded it will show in the comments section It will begin with a back arrow {<} then an a :) i.e.

This is a quote from the Gotd About page: "That means – not a trial, not a limited version – but a registered and legal version of the software is completely free for our visitors*.
The software product is presented in its full functionality, without any limitations save for those mentioned in Terms and Conditions."

As such, I expect the software (inc. games, since there is no disclaimer to the contrary) to be a full unlocked version and not crippleware or DEMO. At least it should be stated it the info box, so I won't waste time downloading installing and uninstalling after I find out I was deceived.

................................Moderator comment...............................

The game giveaway was a fully functional giveaway that required an activation module (which was included). Installing the provided demo then clicking on the activation module will register the game and unlock the full version. you have not been deceived. Unfortunately the giveaway ended this morning so it is now too late to activate the game.

I installed it and played through the first 20 levels in less than 30 minutes. It's an ok game, but it is too easy. To be fair, I'm crazy good at these things so most people might disagree. But to me it lacks playability.

I liked the fact that there were single-use tiles and fragile tiles, but I thought it needed some rethinking from a gameplay angle; for example traps, one-way zones, maybe a life system where you only get X lives to finish the level, perhaps a time limit for arcade mode, things like that.

I also didn't like the fact that the colors all kinda look alike. they need to be a more pronounced color, especially the blue/purple dots I had some trouble telling apart, and I have good eyesight. I gave it a thumbs up because I think it would be a good logic game for preteens or even teens, but unless it gets a lot harder after 20 levels, it's just a bit boring - sorry. Thanks anyway

Tried a couple of levels, and I think this game has potential. Add some modern graphics, and it would be really cool.

Song list (in order of file numbering):
1. Archons of light by ArchAngel, 03.08.96 (!)
2. Essence of Life by ArchAngel, 02.23.06
3. After The End by 'ndr, Karwath (aka AKA), 09.96 (I think the name isn't in English encoding, so it's a bit screwed up.)
4. Beyond Atlantis by ArchAngel/scc, spring '98
5. New Forest by ArchAngel, 09.05.97
6. Vanity -remedy97- by ArchAngel, '97
7. Left It All Behind... by Alex Smith, 12.02.00
8. Blue Shores by Alex Smith, 08.20.98
9. Friend(Chip) =) by AQUALIFE, '02
10. Through The Light by ArchAngel, 09.14.96

The songs aren't the best I've heard, but they sure are old enough to have merit (most of them, anyway).

---------------
I'm currently actively modding A Magnetic Adventure (initially published by Alawar), as I finally wrote a packer/unpacker for it. If you like puzzle games, check it out. It's not free, but it's worth the price (I think $6.99).

BTW, to those who noticed Alawar's Alawar Unlimited and don't like to pay for a month or a year of access (I'm talking to you Whiterabbit), you can actually get the game by itself at its regular price from the wrapper. Just click on buy and there's the second and third tab for purchase.

.....................Moderator Comment.......................

Thanks GMMan, I'll check that out. I couldn't find any way to purchase certain games (eg Treasures of Montezuma 3). Bought A Magnetic Adventure some months back.

@39 The game's registry entry is inserted into HKCU. Due to the wrapper's built in manifest, it forces Windows to run it with admin privileges. It's not really the game's fault. You can try the "Run As" option as yourself, and if it doesn't work, search up "Resource Hacker", open the file in it (drag and drop is the easiest), and in the resource 21\1\1033, remove the "trustInfo" section, so it looks like this:

MyApplication

Save and rerun, and the wrapper won't prompt you to be admin.

@46: Absolutely wrong. The .pak are just renamed XM and Impulse Tracker modules. Next time, please verify things with a hex editor, or at least WordPad. The description of npmod32.dll is also a dead giveaway. Sorry if I offend.

----------------

Haven't actually played the game, as I just came back from work, but I _can_ comment on the modding aspects of the game. Starting with the most interesting, is the level format. *.cdn files are the actual level files. It's in a hybrid .ini format, with the header following that format, with the rest of the actual level data being just a section header and an ASCII representation of the level blocks (in a 15*15 grid). The header is self explanatory, and I haven't messed around with the level data yet. The *.cdx files seem to be indexes. They are automatically generated. Not sure what they're really for; researching it a bit right now. Sprites and images are bitmaps, with the odd mask here and there. Sounds are .wav files. Backgrounds are .jpg. Music, as mentioned, are tracker modules. It seems that the library used for playing the music is the old ModPlug Plugin. A list of acceptable file formats are listed in the version info, under FileExtents and FileOpenName. You can't simply put a MP3 file there, because the library does not support MP3s (I tried).

I would rate this game's modability at 5/5, since everything is open, with the exception of game logic.

More comments and a list of songs from the game to follow...

I still have my copy from back in Jan 2007 and have played CubeDrift as a "time waster" many a time. I don't recall having a problem with installation(XP SP3) @ the time nor did I have to deal with the DEP Problem. I was new at the time so probably wouldn't have installed the game at that time if i had. I do wish it had a "game saved" as my memory is bad and I repeated levels a lot. Half way through a level i would figure out I had already done the level. I am really surprised the price of the game is still the same as most games developers/sites have dropped their prices significantly.

Thanks Dextrogames and GOTD for the game and That Wrascally Wabbit for the review.

P.S. I am still waiting for the game to increase my IQ! :)

Level editor does not work.

............................Moderator Comment..........................

Hi Marge The editor works for me. When you say it does not work, what exactly do you mean. Does it open from the main menu, can you place any of the blocks, or can't you save it? No one else has mentioned that it doesn't work. Unfortunately I can't think why it won't work.

Someone previously mentioned that Visual Basic is required. Have you allowed windows to update recently, it could be that you don't have it installed (though that's unlikely especially if you have several games installed because a lot of games use VB). It may be that your copy is corrupted. It's an easy matter to update.

I hope this helps.

Glad to see the free games again! And this is quite a good one, IMHO. No bells and whistles, the game is simple - but NOT easy. At least not past the first few levels. I think I'm going to be addicted in short order, LOL. I'm running XP/SP2, and had no problems with either the download or the gameplay.

Mike wrote "Note that the GOTD registration key is stored in the User section of the registry, so probably want to activate in all Windows profiles where you want to play the game."

This would explain what I wrote above, but does anyone know how to activate in a non-admin profile? Activate.exe must be run as administrator, so then only the administrator profile gets activated for this game.

CubeDrift:
The game itself:
I find the game to be a refreshing change from so many of the puzzle games that have bloated the market lately. I mean the match three, tetris, etc games that seem to be at every turn anymore. I have a few games along this line that I find enjoyable in that you actually have to think about your moves instead of just hitting a few buttons as fast as you can. Adding that each block has to go onto a given color is a nice addition that gives an extra challenge that is good as well. While the game is one that you need to think about your moves; (including the next few moves that you are going to make) it is still easy enough that younger players and those new to this type of game can still play and enjoy. The increasing difficulty is at a pace that keeps the game in this realm for those players as well, yet still being able to keep the veteran player interested; in my opinion.

Save:
Although the game does not seem to offer a 'save' it does seem to let you pick any of the offered levels to play without having to complete them all first.

Color:
The colors in the game seem 'faded' to me, but not so much that I find myself unsure of where the blocks should go or even which blocks are which color. Though, the 'faded' colors do seem to make it very easy on the eyes. This might make extended playing times better or at least done without as much eye strain. Though I am no expert there. The addition of the 'color blind mode' is a nice addition. Not only for those that are actually color blind, but also for those with older eyes that might find the faded color more difficult to make out. I think this is a great option for a game like this and more color oriented puzzle games should think about having this.

Music: The music in the game is not horrible, but I felt that that the high tones/pitch to the music became very annoying after just a few levels and I had to turn it off. I have not looked into it; and it is not a big enough deal to me, but I am sure there must be a way to change the music if it is for others.

Options: Besides the color blind mode option all the usual options seem to be available, BUT only on an 'on/off' factor. I would have really liked to see a slider bar for at least the volume on the music and sounds. Perhaps with this I could have found a level for the music that was tolerable to me.

Overall:
I found the game enjoyable enough that I will be keeping it and I am sure that I will be playing it from time to time (especially for a break between longer games). I would give it an 8 out of 10, but with the market offering so many similar games the price would bring it down to a 6 out of ten in my opinion.

Thank you GGOTD and Dextronet for a very nice game!

Other:
Now, I would like to touch on a few 'odd and unfair' comments that I have seen as well. The comments that I am referring to are specifically #14 (bucked) and #23 (ephorate).
@#14: I believe that you may need to look up 'trivializing' to be sure you are using it right. In no way has WR done what you have accused him of. IN FACT he has not only pointed out that it HAS happened (one other time) but has mentioned that instead of turning DEP off you should make an exception IF you still want to play the game. Offering also the steps to do so (See #2 under PROBLEMS in his review). As far as his answer to #2 he basically said that they would be missing out on a good game for free, and that no one else (to his knowledge) has had ANY problem with this game (whether they have not had the problem, made the exception, or disabled DEP). Furthermore, he also made it clear that this was that persons choice if they did not want to do so. As far as him doing any 'disservice' to GOTD at all; you must be new to the site. He has (for free I might add) found a multitude of safe free games for everyone, thoroughly tested those mentioned as well as the ones offered here, and written very thorough honest reviews on his own time.
@#23: Your first paragraph (it seems to me) blindly agrees with #14. Though the subject matter is technically right, you also did not look into all that was said. I hate to repeat, but will. WR has not only pointed out that it HAS happened (one other time) but has mentioned that instead of turning DEP off you should make an exception IF you still want to play the game. Offering also the steps to do so (See #2 under PROBLEMS in his review). I fail to see anything in his response that is 'rubbishing Bucked's' opinion. WR simply defends his position and backs his reasoning up with his experience and the things that he has done here. He is not some fly by night hack, he is here and has done many things (many outside the scope of his free work here) for anyone that needs it.

@#14 & #23: Now I ask both of you. Besides trashing WR comments without reading anything else he has said; What is it that you have done? I have not seen any reviews from you. I have seen nothing from you but your hasty words and quotes from Window's help file. Perhaps before you go off unfairly accusing people you should not only research what you are about to do, but take a look at what you have done to make this a better site.

And that is my opinion and all I got to say about that.

Thank you for some exceptionally good feed back on this game and also for some support of the issue you mention at the end of your post.

Got this the first time around and liked the game but the lack of a 'save' feature is a deal breaker for me. After solving a bunch I found myself forgetting exactly where I'd left off. Got tired of keeping track so deleted it.

Hi Catherine, What scanners do you use? No one else has mentioned this so it could be a false positive?

Overall, I quite enjoyed this game and had no problems installing it or running it on 64-bit Win7. Didn't see the DEP warning.

Honestly, I don't mind the fact that the graphics are a little dated - it gives the game a clean look in my opinion (but that may be more a function of how long I have been playing games and what kinds of graphics I've gotten used to than anything else :) ).

There were a few things that could be improved, though:

1. No indication which levels have been completed. While I like the fact I can skip around in the game and come back to levels that have stumped me, I'd rather not have to remember what level I was on the last time I played.

2. No move counter or 'par' number of moves to beat. The ability to at least meet if not exceed the par score makes the game much more interesting for me.

3. The interface to move blocks was a bit fiddly. It was sometimes really difficult to get the movement arrow to stay in the right spot - especially in windowed mode. Maybe a keyboard option would help those of us with twitchy mice.

4. As others have noted, the cost on the developer's site is awfully high. Aside from the fact that many casual games are going for #6.99 - $9.99 these days, the game (while very fun to play) just doesn't seem worth that much.

Seems that the game must be played as administrator (Win 7 64-bit), otherwise it will remain in demo mode. Activate.exe only activates it for the administrator.

Otherwise, no issues playing. Seems like a nice game, but I am sure I will never make it to even that first level shown in the videos (26). I had trouble in the 80s playing Pengo and lining up the bonus cubes without using a wall let alone what has to be done in that level...

Haven't played it much yet but it looks like a new way to keep my worries and Alzheimer's at bay. Thanks.

CubeDrift is a VB [Visual Basic] game that comes with 4 VB support files included in Setup.exe. When it comes to VB, mileage varies depending on what you've already got installed & the version of Windows you're in -- e.g. in win7 the latest .NET can get involved supplying VB support. If you need it because CubeDrift won't run properly, Microsoft still offers the VB6 runtime file installation file in their Download Center [easiest to Google/Bing rather than visiting that Download Center 1st however] along with several updates or hotfixes. In a win7 VM [Virtual Machine] CubeDrift's level editor complained that one VB support file was missing -- I just needed to copy it into Windows\ System32 [SysWOW64 in 64 bit Windows], & Did Not need to register the file there with Windows. I did find that if you run CubeDrift as admin in win7, win7 does not use it's file/folder virtualization (which is something that may help older apps to run well in win7). I didn't experience any DEP-related issues, but if you do here's what Wikipedia says: http://goo.gl/jKYm & here's a Microsoft FAQ: http://goo.gl/dxFT3 ... [Note that granting Windows' DEP exceptions or turning it on/off globally is something you should decide to do, or not, based on your own Risk/Reward analysis -- all anyone else can do is give you their opinions. It's like a couple I saw the other day, riding a motorcycle wearing shorts & sandals -- that didn't increase their risk of having an accident, only the risk of more serious injury if they did. One hopes that they thought about that so they could decide whether it was worth it or not [a risk/reward analysis], & if they did, well, IMHO that was & should be their decision, & none of my business. If you have to do something with DEP, I think it's your decision the same way. :-) ]

Installing VB support files has consequences, & those can be trivial or significant, from maybe changing a few registry values from all caps to lower case, to breaking other VB apps you have installed. Registry impact also varies, depending on if the VB-related files CubeDrift needs are already installed or not. Otherwise the "CubeDrift" program folder has 160 files, 11 folders, taking up ~13 MB, & ignoring anything VB, you get one new shell key [for the levels editor], an uninstall key, & 3 new program keys for today's game. Note that the GOTD registration key is stored in the User section of the registry, so probably want to activate in all Windows profiles where you want to play the game.
