Bordering on the naff side and way off the mark when compared to games such as Robbox. Both graphics and game play are simple with the only saving grace being that it's ever so slightly puzzling for a second or so. A poor effort from 300AD.

How do you kill the monsters? I looked on their site and there's no help on how to kill monsters in the level "Kill them all"

Just for info sake. I install all the free games and software on my storage hard drive. (An extra hard drive I use for storage) After a wipe and replace they are still working. I just have to send shortcuts to my desktop afterwards. Thanks for the site GOTD.
And BTW... WHAT? No "I'm first!" Posts?

Game runs fine even on my oldest pc. Although when I tried to read the instructions, it fired up ie and died there. Nonetheless, it plays well otherwise.

People didn't read my previous post (#11). These VGA platform games will not tax out your systems. It has NOTHING to do with your computer's memory.

To prove it, I installed this game on a PIII 1GHz Windows 98 machine that has only 378MB (that's right, MB, not GB). It ran fine, and my system continued to run as usual. Nothing wrong. Sorry, but I'm not inclined to install the game on my newer Win XP machine, but I would not be surprised that's what people with the problems have.

I don't know how old Crystal Caves is, but I wouldn't be surprised it's a revitalized old game (not a remake for modern computers). Older games WILL cause problems on newer machines. The problem isn't the memory, but the software conflicts on your machines.

(Chuckles as Vista is released).

#16 Your sermon wasn't needed by me. I clean the registry every time I uninstall anything using reg cleaner apps and finish it with regedit. I have defragged more times that I can count.

My startup is as lean as is possible with no unnecessary programs loading at start up. And I have twice wiped my hard drive clean and started over from scratch. I run scans with my security apps on a weekly basis...and more frequently if I feel it's necessary.

I check everything thoroughly before I ever post anything to a message board.

All of that being said, Crystal Cave is working fine.

#18 Lori, I have found that having the setup.exe is not enough. Having activated a game is not enough. I had to do system restore last week and lost 2 games in the process. However, I still had the setup.exe for both. When I tried to install them, I got a message saying that the time for installing the game for free had passed and if I wanted it, I would need to buy it. For me, it wasn't any great loss as I'm not all that much into computer games anyway. Spider solitaire is more my speed.

for destiny (#7) and marsha (#14): i'll try to combine my response, so it will anwer answer both of your questions. of course you can burn the games to cd for backup. just burn the installation execs to a cd, just like you would any other file; that way you if you ever need to reinstall if, you have it. personally, i've paritioned my hard drive in order to keep backups on it and also some of my other files, so there's more room on my hard drive. i backup everything on my hard drive and burn it to disc on a monthly basis, since i do all my financialk work, etc., on the pc.

My computer has 1.5G of DDR memory, and all the 300AD games play like silk. Checking the system requirements for some of their games: Electric Eddy uses 87Mb, Crystal Cave uses 105Mb and Phantasia 2 uses 84MB. For those who are getting system lock up's i wouldn't be so ready to blame it all on the distributors. They have been kind enough to give several of their games away (okay with ulterior motives) however maybe you should look to your own system for a fault before you go blaming others. I may be wrong. If so i apologise in advance, but check what your system is using first and see if you can reduce the background programs that are probably running. This phrase I see about wasting system resources is a joke. Every program you run uses system resources. When your playing this game do you need all the other things that are running in the background. I bet not. A previous giveaway "absolute start up" would solve some of your memory problems and maybe then you'll be able to try the games out. There may be other problems with your computer. Have you ever cleaned the registry, or defragged you HDD's to ensure optimum running of your system. It could be that the games your downloading are saved over a large area of your disc, making it hard to run the program. These are just a few suggestions, there are many more, but i haven't got the patience to write any more as crystal cave is awaiting, lol.

It would be really helpful if people with problems could list the platform and basic specs on their systems. That way those with the same system can watch out and avoid the same problem.

For something like these low graphics, platform games, memory shouldn't be an issue. My first guess would be a specific Windows version that is causing the problem, or some other application conflict. Such as, I imagine a complete nightmare of getting older games running with Windows Vista. I'm staying away from that for at least another year.

#5 I had the same problem as you. Both Rock and Roll as well as Phantasia 2 froze everything solid. I tried to post a comment about that, but for some reason it didn't post. Not a problem. I decided to try installing Crystal Cave to my external 160 GB hard drive. That seems to be the solution, because my computer has not slowed down at all.

Thank you, Game Seeker, for the link to the Hints. I'm definitely going to need them.

#5 I stay away from 300AD games for the same reason. They bring my computer to a complete standstill. I tried Rock and Roll as well as Phantasia 2 and both did the same thing. I had to uninstall them to get my computer working properly again. I have a 4 year old notebook with 512 MB memory. Maybe that isn't enough, I don't know.

Face: contact 300ad.com, they are very kind and I'm sure they will help you

I bought Crystal Cave Gold a half year ago, it looks like as the old Boulder Dash, but it is 10 times harder - there are great logic riddles, I have not solve all levels. It is one of the most challenged games I have ever played (sure - not all levels are hard :)

I installed it and it gummed up my whole computer - locked everything and refused to close - same thing happened with the Rock and Roll one - it was using 95% of my power. I'm on a 1 yr. old laptop with the max memory you could get last year. Anybody know why this happens?

Sigh. Another DOS-style keyboard controlled push puzzle, but this one looks much better than Electric Eddie and the Rock 'n Roll one. Not my kind of game but others enjoy these so just like yesterday here's 300AD's Crystal Cave Gold hint page for different levels that other players found difficult:

http://www.300ad.com/crystal_cave_hints.php

Also a heads up, anyone who would like a Christmas version of Crystal Cave (regular version, not Gold), that one is freeware from 300AD so you can download it now and save the install for next Christmas. Here's that link:

http://www.300ad.com/crystal_cave_christmass_treasure.php

(And no ..I didn't give this a thumbs down just becuase I don't like these kind of games. Just didn't rate it at all.)
