I rate this game 1 out of 10.

I beat the game last night after playing it for 30-60 minutes. I quit after each level to do stuff on the computer.

It doesnt support the mouse, which is rather annoying, especially for the menu.

the menu was very lacking. there should be the ability to change the keyboard controls. My wrist got cramped pretty fast while holding down the ctrl and z key. both of those weapons are unlimited so why not just merge the 2 weapons into one key, or the ability to?

And I agree with posts #13 and #14. Once I learned I could shoot the targets off screen using the mini map, thats how I beat the game, fighting only with the occasional flying object when I got to close.

And I agree with Steve, this game needs a boss at the end of each level to increase the difficulty. I beat a few levels with out even realizing I was firing on the main object off screen.

I suggest removing the ability of being able to fire on off screen objects, that would greatly increase the difficulty of this game. And the ability to change difficulty levels would be great to.

And there should be ship upgrades as well. And perhaps more levels, or at least a level editor so people can create thier own and share them.

I didnt find the music/sound effects annoying.

Downloaded and installed faultlessly, but I'm unable to activate the game, despite repeated attempts. Apparently the GGAotD server is overwhelmed (unable to activate the software giveaway, too).

As previously mentioned (sometimes in very loud type...what's up with that?), the keyboard-only controls can be frustrating. For those that learned to play video games in the '80's or '90's, keyboard controls would be second nature by now, and they likely would not experience the same level of frustration. I'm relatively new to video games though, and tend to prefer simpler controls (trackball, joystick).

Gameplay brings back memories of Asteroids, with more color and flair.
Bright colors and good contrast make the game easy on the eyes, even if the graphics are primitive.

Too bad I cannot get it activated in time; the neighborhood kids may have enjoyed this one.

The game installed and played alright. But it was rather poor, about the standard of a w.i.p freeware game, I certainly can't imagine anyone paying for it.
Incidentally, you can wipe out the flying enemies by flying in circles firing your gun.

Pamela, regarding my offer from yesterday: Go check comment #52 from yesterday’s game giveaway.

This is an okay shooter, although it looks several years out of date. I personally prefer the space shooters that have lots of pyrotechnic explosions and loads of power ups as well as other bonuses. This game has limited power up’s in the form of three missiles and a health package, with no apparent upgrades for the hovercraft. It doesn’t mention any thing about bosses, which tend to be a feature of this type of game. (For those less familiar with this genre of game; a boss is a much harder and usually larger craft with far superior fire power, which you must destroy before going onto a different level set. The next stage usually has a different set of weapons to collect, and/or different enemies and backgrounds)

I cannot say what later levels are like with this game because I only played the first level (several times while reviewing the game). The developers description leads me to believe that there isn't much variation between levels, especially with respect to enemy craft variability, although I may be wrong. I’ll probably keep it on my son’s computer for the time being because he’s already played out all the others of this genre that have been given away. (I am including this game with the side and upwards scrolling shooters, although the link is rather tenuous). The ability to see your enemies via the map enables you to plan your attack. The health packs should be used sparingly because there is a limited supply of these. Your starting health is 1000 : this seems to be reduced by 25 health points for every hit you receive by the smaller craft and more by the gun emplacements. The health pack will take you back to full health no matter what your damaged state is, so it is advisable to use these when your health is relatively low, say for example 100. Using the map you can steer clear of the red enemy crafts or the gun emplacements as these are not activated till you are within a certain distance from them (usually just out of sight). So make sure you remember where to go for your health pack when you need it.

Initially it's rather difficult to control the ship, especially if you are like me and never use game console pads or the keyboard much with arcade games. I much prefer mouse control, which this game doesn't have. However control of your hovercraft doesn’t take too long to get used to. Shooting enemies can be a problem initially; however you do have guided missiles by pressing X, which should take care of the first few waves until you’re more familiar with maneuverability and the use of the keys. Unfortunately there’s no function for being able to change your key configuration to one that may suit you better. And for those with disabilities, this will definitely pose a problem.

The main menu has a link to Alive Games more popular games, so it may be worth checking these out. Most are reasonably recent such as Magic Ball 3, and even has the rarely seen but award winning Gish, a very unusual arcade game (both of which I’ve already got) that I highly recommend to those who like the unusual. (check out the demo first of course). The game (Gish) has a fan site linked to the developers site Chronic Logic

www.Chroniclogic.com

where you can get lots of extra level sets for the game as well as useful hints from fans of this game on how to make your own levels using the editor that comes packaged with the game. It probably won’t be offered here though because it’s 32Mb in size. You can’t access the fan site till you have the full version of the game (I think)
