For those having issues getting today's game to work; please check the FAQ's thread over in the Game Discussion forums. There's a link (labelled Forums sandwitched between Contact and Blog at the bottom of this page that will take you to the Forums.

Select the Game Discussion link in the Forums Main Theme section near the bottom of the Latest Discussions page; once in the Game Discussion forum look thorough the sticky section of the Game Discussion forums where you'll find the Game FAQ's thread.

Hopefully you'll find a fix there; I reckon it's worth the effort; epsecially if you like breakouts.

Ashampoo-Snap-05-February-2022-07h49m11s-003
In Brief:
The Ballbuster Collection is a 3D version of breakout with 1000 levels divided into four themes of 250 tables each. Explore and beat each one; there's three different modes of play i.e Level mode where you play level after level until you fail. Your high score is entered into a score table on this mode. Choosing game gives you instant access to all 1000 levels and random game where the level is randomly chosen for you.

You can see a couple of videos of game play HERE and HERE.
Introduction:
The Ballbuster Collection is a break out game (often referred to as an arkanoid game). There are four themed worlds i.e. Stone Age, Ancient Greece, Fantasy Forest, and Candy World.

Features
1,000 levels
4 worlds
3 difficulty modes
3 types of weapons
20 power-ups
The Game:
Breakout games have been one of my favorite casual arcade games ever since I played the very first breakout made by Atari back in 1976. I've been collecting them since they first became easily available when the first desktop PC's appeared in the 1980's and have hundreds of them, most of which are shareware, but there are also loads of free ones that you can find online, for example you'll find free 3D breakouts HERE (30) and 2D breakouts HERE (169).

Todays giveaway is a 3D version, which I've found tend to be relatively easy to beat compared to their 2D compatriots. Still, todays game is an excellent starter with over one thousand levels to beat.

The older style graphic reminds me of those breakouts released around 15 to 20 years ago for example XRay Ball, and the early Magic Ball series. The developer of Magic Ball, that was originally distributed by Alawar Games was forced to change all four Magic Ball games to Smash Frenzy (1 to 4) because Magic Ball had already been used by a previous developer.

As with all breakouts of this type, you get various power-ups that can speed up your ball or slow it down, increase the size of your bat or make it smaller as well as change the ball to a bomb, make the whole arena move slightly when you move your bat as well as some weapon types such as the laser and machine gun that help to destroy lots of bricks. All of the power-ups are either timed to last a short period, or with respect to those with weaopons, the ammunition is limited, and if you pick up another weapon power-up, it will cancel the one you already have (unless you've expended all the ammunition). The N power up cancels any power ups added to your ball, but does not change power ups added to your bat or cancel the barrier power up that blocks off the drop zone below the bat.

When you have destroyed most of the bricks in the level, you can end the level quickly by collecting one of the icons that falls near the end of the level (see the power-ups image directly above for details of what it looks like), or you can continue to the end of the level by avoiding the 'Complete Level' power-up to get the best possible score if you've chosen the Level Mode and if you are into being on the high score tables.

Conclusion:
Although the game looks a little dated, it plays perfectly and for anyone who likes breakouts/arkanoids, (they are often called arkanoids becasue of Taito's entry into the breakout market, which was called Arkanoid). I recommend downloading it for yourself. This game will keep you entertained for many many hours due to the number of levels it contains.

If you fancy more free breakouts check the links I posted above and check out the thread I created over in the giveaway forums about a decade ago specifically for breakouts where you'll find links to free versions HERE. Also check out the recently created forum section called 'Free Game Project', where I've posted details of one of my all-time top ten 2D breakouts that was made freeware by the developer several years ago, called Breakquest. I've just discovered that another of my (all-time) favorite 3D breakouts, called Action Ball Deluxe is being released on Steam next month. The developer did say, when Actionball 2 was released over a year ago, that if 100 people liked the game, he would release the original. Really pleased to see it on Steam soon. You can check it out HERE. It's over 15 years old, but it still looks great and is one of the more challenging 3D breakouts available.

Also, available free is another excellent and unusual breakout called Chak's Temple. The developer made this freeware over a decade ago, yet I still see it being sold on some of the shareware sites. I know it was made freeware because I was in touch with the developer at the time.

I've checked several download sites, but most of the files I downloaded were suspect with up to 20 malware hits. The only site I downloaded a copy that was totally free from malware hits was from My Real Games HERE; I checked it against Virus Total and it was given a clean bill of health. You can see the result of the scan HERE

I've not yet had the pleasure of downloading and installing any games from My Real Games; so cannot say what sort of system they use; suffice it to say that all the free game sites I know of that stock games permanantly or for extended periods all have an advert based giveaway so that they can pay the developers for allowing them to give them away.

It was originally given away HERE way back in April 2007, where it received a positive 88% from 269 votes with 64 comments.

Final Say
I'd only played several levels before writing my short review of the game. I'd like to say, despite its retro looking graphic, I've found the game to be very well constructed and gives you lots of different levels to play with. The more I play it, the more I like it. I've got far better breakouts in my collection, but this one is still a decent game and well worth adding to your library. I did note that the initial start is sluggish. If you try to click on the screen before the full main menu appears it's lible to crash. Once the main menu (see the first image above) is visible then the game should be okay to continue. All three modes give you something slightly different, the first mode (Level Mode) gives you a High Score table, the Choose Game mode enables you to choose any one of the thousand levels from four different worlds and the Random game just throws you in and randomly chooses a game from the four different worlds.

Notes on Security
I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game using Virus Total and it found zero hits from 56 antimalware engines.

The downloaded executable 'may' include some low level adware that opens your browser to TooMKY Games home page after the game has installed and may place some shortcuts onto your desktop; these can be safely deleted once the game has installed.

The installation does NOT inject any malware into your system. When your browser is opened to TooMKY Games home page following the games installation, it earns TooMKY Games games some money, part of which is given to the developer of the game for allowing the game to be given away free. The giveaway version of TooMKY games version has had most of the adware disabled.

You can see the results of the scan via the following link:

Whiterabbit-uk,

Other Free Games:
For other free games, please check Delenn's threads over in the giveaway forums HERE (non Steam games) and HERE (Steam games) for the latest freebies; it's kept up to date frequently, whenever a free game becomes available, (thanks for keeping this up to date Delenn, very much appreciated).

Also for the latest Steam sales check THIS Steam database site out. You can list the games in 'price' & 'percentage off' by clicking the headers. If you link SteamDB with your Steam account, all games that you already have will be highlighted in green and those in blue are on your wish list. When there are Steam games being given away, you'll see the percentage off as 100%. It's worth checking this regularly to make sure you don't miss the best deals and freebies. Delenn usually posts links to all free games within several hours of them going live, so check her links at the top of this comment as well.
Don't forget to check Indie Gala's freebie section HERE, then click on the Showcase header, selecting freebies from the drop down menu; the most recent additions include:

1) ... The Last Enchantress: Revival, (choice-based fantasy game, contains adult themes and not suitable for children)

2) ... Revolution Ace (vertical scrolling shmup)

3) ... Avani: The Primal Land (Explore, gather, learn, craft and build in the world of Avani: The Primal Land. Fight, hunt and tame wild animals. Animals have their own genetics and no animal is like the other. The interactive taming process allows making a real bond with each tame. Avani offers a unique crafting system combined with a huge skill tree and an intuitive building system mixed with traditional survival game elements)

4) ... Cov Shooter (Try to survive as many waves as possible, upgrade your stats and weapons to do that)

5) ... WTC : Relentless Protagonist [Sxs}, (a short mostly KINETIC comedy/drama visual novel)

6) ... Pixel Puzzles 2: Space, (jigsaw puzzle)

7) ... Out of Puberty: Chapter 1 (graphic novel, contains adult themes and not suitable for children)

8) ... Neon Invasion Earth, (space invaders)

9) ... Figment (A musical action-adventure set in the recesses of the human mind)

The following (previously) free games have now been removed from the free library: Six Sides of the World, Byte Family, Alone on Mars, Garfield Kart, Nostradamus the Last Prophecy, Snowball, Pixel Puzzles 2: Christmas , Die Young (Full version), Distortions, Dino Run DX, Cheap Golf, Kill Em All, Dead Hungry Diner, and Contract with the Devil. All remaining freebies can be found in the showcase section (113 games are available). Not all games that go into the showcase remain free and are removed after a short period; so, you should grab them as soon as you can.

The latest Epic freebie is now Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair; it's a brand-new platform adventure from some of the key creative talent behind 'Donkey Kong Country'. With their arch-nemesis Capital B up to no good the buddy duo needs to spring into action once again to save the day!

Next Thursday 10th February we will be getting Windbound - Shipwrecked alone on an uncharted island, explore, adapt and navigate the land and perilous seas to stay alive. As Kara, you are a warrior, caught at sea in a fierce storm, adrift from your tribe. Thrown from your boat, at the mercy of the turbulent waters, you are tossed on to the shores of the Forbidden Islands, a mysterious paradise.
The best Indie Bundles sites that have been operating from around 2011 are the Humble Bundle and Indie Gala sites (though the latter isn't as good as it used to be) where you'll sometimes find decent bundles with over 90% off the usual price of the games included in the bundles. The Humble site is in my opinion the best; though a more recent addition that is worth checking out called Fanatical games looks to be a serious contender for that title as they have some very good bundles. You can find Fanatical games (that used to be called Bundle stars) HERE.

I've restarted a project I originally started back in 2008 that used to be called Good Games to Grab, where I posted free games over in the forums on a daily basis. I won't be posting them daily this time; only as and when I have time and the inclination. You can find the new forum section entitled 'Free Game Project' HERE

So far I've posted eight excellent PC games, plus one android game as well as suggested or linked to others similar to the ones posted i.e.

1) ... Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe (a squad based solo shooter)
2) ... Battlegroup 44 (a free standing mod for Battlefield 2 that is a follow up to the original Battlefield 1942)
3) ... Slam Tilt (an excellent pinball game with four tables)
4) ... 3-D Ultra Pinball: Creep Night, (one of my all time favorite pinball games from the mid 90's).
5} ... Breakquest (one of my all time top ten 2D breakouts)
6) ... Messy Paths (an android game)
7) ... Castlevania The Lecarde Chronicles (fan made free standing Castelvania game)
8) ... Conflict Vietnam (third person squad based shooter)
9) ... Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2006 Trophy Season (a linear hunting game)

I'll be adding over the coming weeks.

Black And White Apocalypse that was given away some weeks ago by the developer hammergames is always free and can also be downloaded as a colour version. The community member Space pointed this out at the time. You can find both versions over on itch.io via the following links. Black & White version, and Coloured version. :)

You can also find 'all nine' of the developers games (for free) HERE. Some of them look like they are worth investigating. :)

The latest Humble Choice bundle went live on Tuesday and includes eight games plus one dLC pack; i.e. Borderlands 3 with the directors cut DLC included, Black Book, Per Aspera, Just Die Already, Before We leave, Paradise Lost, Everhood and Calico. For original Humble Bundle subscribers the cost is $12/£8.99 with other benefits such as access to a lot of indie titles for free while subscribed and a percentage off other purchases from the Humble store. This increases the longer you keep subscribed up to a year with 20% off all none bundle purchases. (1 month sub' gives 10% off, 3 months sub' gives 15% off and six months sub'gives 17% off)

If you have Amazon Prime, the February games are now available. You can get Stellaris on GOG for free. Visit Prime Gaming for details.

Stay safe everyone.

The download link came so late (delayed by hours), so that I forgot about it and now it's not free any more. :-/

No go Windows 11 Pro. 2011 program 32 bit so no cursor nor keyboard. Cursor only worked at start screen in 'ghost' form.
Too bad might have been fun. Tried usual stuff, Compat mode sets Windows 7, didn't try any others. Run as Admin fails.
Thanks anyway. On to free demo of soon to be released Action Ball at Steam. Demo claims will be compat with full game and that as is the demo is about like game, just maybe a sampling of levels. March 14 or so full release date. Price ?

If it helps at all...

Game runs in my Win10 Home 64-bit VM with the compatibility troubleshooter setting game.exe to Win7 compatibility. The resized window is 1024 x 768, which is the max size listed on the game's options screen. Unchecking Full Screen I lost all the button labels, but when the game was restarted all was fine. The changes like windowed mode were stored in Users\ AppData\ Local\ VirtualStore\ [it *may* help to run as Admin.], but not in a plain text readable / editable format, so can't edit the configuration to select windowed mode etc. The game uses OpenGL. & demands on the GPU have to be pretty low since it worked with the VM's emulated hardware. Mouse worked fine using the VM's generic driver, with no stylized pointer.

Get this (or at least try to) only if you wish to be frustrated. Is perhaps designed for Windows XP? Mouse pointer does not show, so you have no control.

When I start up the game I get a "Server Error 404-File or directory not found"; then the intro screen comes up in full-screen mode....with no cursor. I tried turning off full-screen (after much blind exploration), but the change doesn't "take". Without a cursor I'll have to uninstall the game. Any suggestions?

I was really looking forward to this. It was not to be. Won't save my player name and apparently won't play any version of the game without a player name. Too bad. Maybe I'll be able to play tomorrows game.

Fun game -- been quite a while since I played a breakout game.
Note: on restarting, I get a 404 error about a resource not being found, but if I X it out, the game then proceeds to load and play normally.

Jan, to add to my previous trouble free installation when I came to do it for my lap top I got a "Bex Error".
This was down the the lap top and not the game,
It is quite common and a search will show you to clear the error, I believe methods do vary with different Windows OS.
The lap top has numerous Giveaway games on it but this was the first time I had encountered the error.
The game now works fine.

I could not get this to work right. Fist off, I had to set the High DPI compatibility mode to see the whole screen, but then I couldn't get the mouse pointer to be visible. Through trial and error I was able to go into the options and take it out of full screen mode. Then I was able to play it. Very strange.

jb,

Hi jb, thank you for your feedback, appreciated.

I had no issues getting the game to work, using Win 10 Pro (64bit) on a home built computer with two old Nvidia GTX 980 Ti graphic cards updated with the lasted graphic drivers.

jb, the same problem here. Giant pixels so I can see only left upper corner of the screen. Unfortunately. I will not do anything more, only disposing installation files.
