I am sad, I downloaded and was playing the game quiet happily. I came home last night to discover that the .exe file has somehow been deleted from my computer :-( I am the only person who uses this computer, and I can't figure out how the .exe file would have deleted itself. Oh well :-(

.............................Moderator Comment...................................

Hello Gwen, check the recycle bin and/or maybe try a recovery program, to recover the exe file.

I found this game too monotonous and also too easy but still okay for a relaxing time off in the evening. And my kids just LOVE it as you can't really lose and the animations are cute, this game is their absolute favorite I think from any game I ever downloaded here (and I've done so nearly every weekend for years ;-)

Downloaded the game.
It is indeed fairly easy to play, but since there are only scenario's you can play it might get a little boring.
Too bad they didn't add a level in which you can create your own scenario.

Gameplay issues:

Something that was annoying right from the start was that tribesmen had to run all the way back to the main town before you could use them again. It would be much nicer if they could get reassigned while moving.

It bugged me a few times that if I wanted to know how many tribesmen KI had left free in the city, I had to count up each building to see how many I had used. (One time the game had called all but 1 tribesmen from each of my clay houses so none of them had the "Nobody Home" symbol, so a quick visual check wouldn't have been of any use.)
Maybe the unused tribesmen could be walking around in the center circle where the town buildings are located if they're not working? It'd be easier to see.

Something that would be -VERY- nice in my opinion to put in would be that, if you have an available tribesman sitting in your base, placing a building would automatically cause one of them to run out and start building it. It'd make the game much simpler for younger or inexperienced players, while speeding up the gameplay for those who know what they're doing.

Glitch: resources harvested are calculated upon clicking. I once waited a few seconds while a Luck/Morale building was being built so I could get just a little bit more from the pickups. Resources collected drops when a Luck building breaks, and restores when it is repaired.
I haven't checked to see if the number of workers in the building at the time of collection works in the same way. If so, then if you have a few buildings right next to your city entryway you could keep moving 2 workers over right before collecting 3 stacks of resources before popping them back out and sending them to the next building.
It would make the game seem more polished if the glitch wasn't here, though, even if it means I wouldn't be able to use it anymore.

Typos:

One of the level descriptions says that the tribesmen have learned to fuse "copper," when the in-game mouseover and collection tag both say "iron."

The level 21 level description is missing an "s" at the end of "barrack"

This is a fun game but when I got to level 23, many things were happening. Things were flooding counters were going and when I started to whack the big emu the game locked up tight. I was using MS OS XP, 2 GB of memory.

Would have been great to be able to install and play this but the validation server seemed to be down for the last four hours of the offer when I downloaded it (PST). Kept telling me "failed to connect"... and now today it's back up but tells me it's too late.

*sigh*

..................................Moderator comment................................

Did you check the FAQ's section. Failed to connect issues can be casued either by security softwqare or I.E. being offline (this can happen if you are using Firefox)

Good game, but building break far too often. I finally gave up and quit when my gold mine, three times in a row, broke again immediately after fixing it, before anything was produced from it even. And I mean, broke again before I could even click on anything else! Pair that with the flood of animals you have to whack, and thieves you have to beat to what little bit of goods you can collect from your buildings (if they're not just perpetually broken) the game gets so frustrating it's not fun anymore. My daughter ditched it long before I did. I guess I'm more stubborn LOL.

I like this game...not as much as Royal Envoy, a previous (and similar) giveaway, but it's still quite enjoyable. :) I'm not sure if the trouble I'm having with this one is just that I'm not familiar enough with it or if it's a bit more difficult to figure out than Royal Envoy. For instance, I've only been through a few levels, but unlike Royal Envoy, I can't figure out how to add workers. :( But that's nothing against this game...have given it a "thumbs up"! :)

...........................Moderator Comment............................

If the question of workers continues to elude you, post a question in the forums. I'll create a post specific to this game. Someone will have the time to help. I've got to get the kids ready for school.

In the mean time I suggest if you have any installation or start up issues post a comment in the forums as well because there will be no moderation till I get up in the morning, at least someone may be able to respond in the forums.

Good night folks. i hope the comining week is a good one for all of you. :)

Originally had the same confusion as others as how to create a new profile but did discover you just type your name, it really is unclear - no instruction provided. Since so many people seem to have questions, devs should look to add instructions to that screen so users know what to do.

Did run into an issue where game is not saved if you stop mid-level. Exited out and came back only to find myself back at the start of the level. At minimum, it should let you know that progress will not be saved, but it really does need to save.

Am finding the game a bit boring so far, there really is no challenge and you pretty much just follow a set script, no real choices or options. Based on the comments of others, will stick with it a bit more in hopes that it does pick up later.

It does have a bit of lag when initially loading levels and screens, have even gotten application unresponsive messages, but just waited it out. Running on Win 7 64 bit, i7-2670QM processor with 14GB RAM, all drivers, etc are up-to-date and never had an issue with any other app (I run system intensive apps all the time without issue).

Hi there!! I just played the first 7 levels of this game, it was quite fun. I will be looking for Aztec Tribes 2 if it is out there and buy it. I have to say had I not read # 29's post I would have had to ask for help. The three ... were not helpful at all on to enter your name. I have played a lot of games and even I was wondering what I had missed.

That said, this was quite enjoyable, I like these types of games, I have watched my son play Age Of Empires often and it seems a bit too complex for me...maybe one day...but this is just perfect, and I like that you can play a few minutes in between bigger games. The graphics were really cute, the sound not too overbearing, and the sliders to adjust it all very welcome. I actually liked the fact that if you did not click fast enough on the food that the birds ate it. I also liked that you could hire a guy to pick things up. The leader's hut and idols giving you plus to resources or making things produce faster is a nice thing to have. It is always great not to have to go pick up the resources with one of your little men like "Building The Great Wall Of China" (another wonderful builder type.)

Having played an hour of this, I think I will continue to do so today. The only thing I would offer as a suggestion would be to fix how the player enters their name. Instead of the dots, say "your name here or Player 1...something like this.

Thank you again to Alawar, I have given you tons of money! I love you and also to the give away team. Thank you for having this here for us! Thank you to all the great mods also!

I put this in the feedback, but I see so many troubles that I'll explain it again here:

The "Select a user" screen is confusing. I almost gave up, and my husband did until I told him.

It's not locked up. When you see --- that's supposed to tell you to use the keyboard and type a username. Since it appears to be a marker and all the other things are names, I just kept trying to select one.

But if you just type a username with your keyboard, it replaces the --- and the OK is activated.

Thank you for your feedback Margaret. This is what I was trying to tell those who were having problems starting the game.

For those who are having problems with the game getting stuck on the first screen where you can set up a new profile (that is, add your name to the list of players) I have found a similar problem on this and other games. I hope the following may help some of you.

I am running Online Armor (OA)software and this is always working in the background. For this and other games it doesn't allow me to proceed beyond the first screen until I deal with the OA message that is generated about a keylogger being detected. This is not visible on the game screen so I use alt+tab to hide the game and deal with the OA message. The game can then proceed properly. It generates this message because the game is asking for user input on that first screen.

Even if you are not running Online Armor, but are having problems, I would recommend that you use alt+tab in case there is something else that you need to deal with to allow the program to run.

Having got the game running, it is colourful and fun, but I don't know how long it will keep me occupied.

We had a spate of repeat games for quite a long time, but we now seem to be getting more games that are new to the game giveaway project, so thanks to the GOTD team for that. Thanks too to WR for your continued, patient and helpful moderation.

Hi GGOTD & the Mod who was trying to help me ...

I Found the answer to my problem and Poster #10 ... in my frustration I started tapping the Keyboard like a mad man and that did it ...

Actually, let the game start when you get to the "Profile", "New User Name" you Don't have to choose any players ... Just start Typing In your Name ... and it takes it ... Viola you are done!

BTW, for others, I am running Vista X64.

Thanks again Mod for your Patience and Help!

Loving the game! But I'm puzzled about one thing: after a few levels when you see the map of the settlements you've done, there's a ballon with a green question mark floating above some of them. I thought it might be a new challenge as the same location, but the two I've clicked on simply restart the same challenge you originally did in that location? (And, yes, I'm talking about villages where I did all the way to gold star already.)

Other than that puzzlement, a very nice game.

Not keen on TM's, either. The building games are kind of okay, but timed modes are too hectic, and untimed get boring. I do have the Royal Envoy games, and find the Tribloos fun. (New Tribloos 2 just out on BFG!) I might try this one, since it's free, even if the Chief does look much like a ... turkey, LOL.

I agree about Alawar, though. Great games. Loved Sacra Terra (really creepy), the Magic Encyclopedia series (great innovations), and the Snarkbusters series (wild art, great puzzles, snarky humor). I just prefer the adventure genre - even if I have to endure a few hidden object scenes, LOL.

As with most giveaway games you just delete the installed folder. most giveaways are free standing and have no uninstaller, nor do they install loads of registry entries.

Hi GGAOTD,

I am with Poster #10, game installed and registered A-OK on Vista Home PRem., X64, but I am having the same Problem as #10. The game starts ... goes to Page with Player Name ... but Clicking on OK or DELETE does nothing ... and I am Stuck.

Now the Mod says Create a New "Profile" ... it would be nice if he/she would tell us how ... because I can't see HOW?

Also, if this is an Alawar game why does it say "RedPEn Games"?

Thanks!

................................Moderator comment......................

I'm going to have to delete my copy and reinstall to be able to answer your query, but will need to redownload it first.

I remember the start being a little odd, but I had no trouble creating a profile. i didn't click on anything until I'd created a profile by typing my name. If you are clicking a button fiorst, that may be the problem.

Alawar is a developer of some excellent games, but they also distribute gamews from smaller developers.

Try deleting the game then reinstalling. When you first open the game it asks you to create a profile. Type in your name then click on OK. Hopefully the second time around it will work.

This is a cool game! Many of my best games come from Alawar! Only problem and concern is Alawar Game Box Beta! The monterator quotes
my solution to problem on game box not updating free game! Several articles in gotd forum about this problem! Note with caution for people who install or reinstall this game box! Two additional items are offered to be installed during installtion! It says accept on right side! And this is my concern - Caution = On the left side in small and very, very faded words = Decline. Kind so faded that a person installing the gamebox might not see the words - DECLINE! Seems to be a little sneaky by Alawar! Otherwaise thanks to Alawar for quality games! Thanks gotd!

I agree with what you say abvove. Unfortunately a lot of these developers are resorting to such tactics as it can make them more money. I think they have been forced into doing it to a certain extent because of the recession.

When I installed the demo of Aztec Tribe from Alawar last night (so that I could play the game before I wrote my review, and before it was given away, I unintentionally ended up with Alawars toolbar and my browser was temporarily changed to Alawars home page. Thankfully Avir Task Manager kicked in and I was able to quarantine all of these annoyances. I usually see such things, but for some reason missed them last night.

In Brief:

Aztec Tribe is a basic Time Management (TM) game that focuses mainly on resource management. These are one of the few TM games that I actually enjoy playing as the time constraints aren't as 'rushed' as games like Delivery King, Dance Craze, Amelia's Cafe or Snowy: Lunch rush (all of which are available free from MPC. Personally I prefer games like Farm Frenzy series Sunshine Acres or Virtual Villages ) :)

PicDepict.com
Intro
Installation:

Aztec Tribe downloads to a 61.9 MB zip file that unpacks to a read me and a wrapped setup activation file (the orange colored file with the key symbol), plus there's a setup file with security (setup.gcd) that's protected from being hacked. This file may case some security software to alert the user to a possible malware attack, but it will be a false positive.

The game giveaway team check all game giveaways for malware using several well known anti -malware suites. There has never been a game giveaway infected with malware since the project started back in Dec 2006. The installed game is 54.3 MB in size.

C:\Games\AztecTribe_Game

No desktop shortcut or start menu/programs shortcut are installed, so make sure you make a note of where the game is being installed to so that you can create one for yourself. Once installed you can delete the giveaway setup files.

:info: I've only tested the game on Win 7 this time around, my Vista and XP computers are in need of repair at the moment so am unable to test on those platforms and I'm still not ready to install my copy's of win 8 (Actually misplaced one of them, lol) Anyone running Win 8, Vista or XP, please confirm whether this game works Thank you. ;-)

Introduction:

Eons ago, a peaceful tribe lived in the mountains, with enemies surrounding it on every side. To escape, the people sent out scouts to search for a new home in the valley. When the explorers found a suitable spot, the tribe began the process of creating a glorious new civilization!

Help the budding Aztecs gain a foothold in the ancient world by mining resources and constructing buildings. Then upgrade your structures to attract more citizens, train soldiers and ward off the attacks of a heartless enemy. With stunning animation, colorful visuals and finely-tuned strategic gameplay, Aztec Tribe will keep casual gamers entertained for days on end!

You can also access the awards from the main menu, which include a tally of your Gold Silver and Bronze stars for each level you've completed (You can return to a previous level if you didn't atain gold to try again) as well as several other unknown awards, which you'll discover as you progress through the game. You can set up several profiles, which makes this an ideal family game. Each profile can be seen onmce set up via the high scores table, which is also accesible from the main menu.

tasks

When you first start the game you will have to create a profile. once this has been done starting the game will bring up a short series of storyboard screens (3) in a cartoon like style that give you the back ground story to the game. You can toggle these off either via the options menu, or tick the checkbox in the bottom left of the first screen. Then the level map is show; with you starting at level 1. From here you will be introduced to your first goal which is to build a town with various goals like build a garden, build a wigwam, upgrade the wigwan to level 2, upgrade your garden etc; you also have to collect items such as food.

Anything new in the game is introduced by a small info panel (see the image slideshow below for examples), which can be closed by clicking on the big red OK. :)

Aztec Tribe from Merry Pen Games is a casual combination of Farm Frenzy and Build-a-lot or Totem Tribe and Townopolis. Between building and upgrading gardens, mines and houses and managing a slew of resources, you'll help an adventuresome tribe establish a new home in a faraway land. It's a rewarding and relaxing game that delivers extra challenge only when you want it.

Many years ago, a peaceful tribe of natives lived in the mountains. Enemies surrounded their village on all sides, forcing them to scout out and find a new home. Soon their scouts discovered a fertile valley, a land waiting to be their new home. It's your job to help the Aztecs settle this foreign land by building settlements one by one. With each plot of land you shape, more buildings and upgrades become available, allowing you to create a thriving civilization that's both efficient and luxurious!

info panel
Everything in Aztec Tribe is centred around resources, whether they be physical items such as food, gold and wood or allocating workers where they're needed most. Early stages begin with the same pattern: set-up a wigwam, the central hub where workers stay, then build a garden to produce food, a mine to create gold, a sawmill to chop wood, etc. Resources are created at these buildings but must be manually gathered to go into your queue, giving your cursor something to do while you wait for things to happen. Later you'll be able to create units that gather resources on their own.

Buildings can be upgraded (provided you have the resources) by clicking on the star icon in the menu screen. Each building must also have a worker present before it can operate, another task accomplished using the menu. It's ok to leave houses empty, but mills, farms and mines need someone to keep them running.

One of the more interesting aspects of Aztec Tribe is the option to play "just to win" or play to master the game. Each level has a set of goals you must meet in order to progress. Once you finish those, you're given the option to move on to the next level or to continue and work for a silver medal. Choose the latter and new, more difficult goals will appear. Once those are finished you can even choose to earn a gold ranking!

Aztec Tribe presents a unique mixture of player choices and player boundaries. Each building you construct must be placed in one of the set locations, restricting how many of each you can have on the level. This prevents you from becoming a super resource tycoon, but it also encourages you to branch out and use a variety of buildings. The goals in each level leave little room for creativity, but fortunately there's also little room for failure.

Aztec Tribe isn't a difficult game, as there are very few opportunities for failure. Everything goes pretty much as you would like it to with almost no interruption. It also takes an hour or so before the real game kicks in, making this one a slow-starter. Don't rush into Aztec Tribe expecting a mega management game of challenge. Instead, step in and be ready for a pleasant simulation where you can whack turkeys with sticks and gather resources with your cursor.

With around three dozen levels, Aztec Tribe is a good length for this kind of game. New buildings are doled out slowly, with the bulk of the exciting content coming in the latter half of the game. Even though there's no time limit, things get hectic later on with nefarious critters roaming onto the scene, buildings needing repairs, and resources begging to be gathered across your village.
Casual to its Mesoamerican core, Aztec Tribe is nothing but pure resource managing entertainment.

Music:

You can't change the music in Aztec Tribe without having to go into the games executable which will require a dedicated editing program and experience of coding. however, if you find the music annoying you can open up the volume mixer by right clicking on the speaker symbol that's usually located nect to the clock (you may need to click on the upward pointing arrow to show hidden icons. Once the volume mixer is open expand it to show all items with sound; you can then turn down the games colume slider to zero and perhaps play your own music via your media player. (Can't remember whether you can do this in Win XP?)

Conclusion:

Aztec Tribe is a little like a mix between Totem Tribe and Townopolis. While Aztec Tribe focuses on needing to get your tribe to safe new lands on a mostly-uninhabited island, the focus is mainly on building the right structures and collecting goods to meet goals and is not at all about maintaining tribe health or skill advancement.

It's a fairly easy game with plenty of room to make mistakes. As you progress through the levels the game becomes more intensive and it is possible to run yourself into a corner if you don’t pay attention to your rapiodly decaying buildings and invasion by unwanted animals etc; however, for the most part it’s easy to recover from mistakes.

If you've never played games like Starcraft or Age of Empires, Aztec Tribe is a great way to introduce yourself to the world of rts games. Although not an rts game (real time strategy) itself, it does introduce you to one aspect of r.t.s. games, which is resource management without the need for micro management. If you enjoy this game, I'm sure you'd love the more in depth games of Starcraft and Age of Empires. (Age of Empires is now in its third iteration and Starcraft which was created by Blizzard and who are more famous for their blockbuster game World of Warcraft is in its second iteration.(I've still got a collectors edition of the original starcraft).

Problems:

If you are posting late in the day I would also suggest posting in the main giveaway forums in the game discussion section. If you’ve installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn’t guaranteed. It’s always worth checking out the free games sites as sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them.

Games, Games, and yet more Games plus Download, Installation & Game play Problemsl>:

If you have any problems installing or getting to work today's game please go HERE for help.

If you're looking for something other than today's game check the didimatic site via THIS link for some brilliant deals.

There are several other deals available from Steam for example there's a free weekend for Magika, plus it's 75% off for the game if you decide to purchase (£1.99 for the game or £7.99 for the game plus 20 dlc's {divide by two then multiply by 3 to get the dollar price}). Also you can get Anno 2070 plus some of the dlcs for 60% off with one dlc for 50% off (a choice between a deluxe and standard edition plus 10 dlcs). The 24 hr deal is Stealth B*****d: Tactical Espionage A*****e (asterix denotes expletive) for 50% off; as well as many more from Gamersgate, Gamestop, Greenman Gaming and GOG; all of which you can find via the Didimatic site, which I've linked to above (apart from Greenman gaming.

The usual monthly free game from Alawars game box is now Sprill. It's supposed to change every month, but some community members are seeing the same game for months on end. Dido suggested that you reinstall gamebox to fix the problem. Reinstalling gamebox shouldn't affect any previous freebies. :). (You need to install the free Gamebox from Alawar to access the free games, which for newcomers change approximately every month).

If that's not enough, check out the Game Discussion forums HERE for details of other games either free or on deals such as the Indie Game bundles or the four day sales at IndieGameStand. The latest IndieGameStand game is Leave Home an abstract Shmup. The average price to qualify for bonus content is $1.45, but you can get the game for $1 if you wish.

Check out the Game discussion forums HERE for details of any Indie Game Bundles that are still live. (A new Indie Royale is live plus I think the indie Gala is still running).

You'll find more Time Management games for free over at MyPlayCity (over 120 of them), Gametop and FreeGamePick but please be aware that these sites may add toolbars and home page hijacks to your web browser, but these can be avoided by un-checking the appropriate boxes during installation. Also when you close any of their games down, your browser is opened and directed to the sites home page. This is innocuous so don’t worry. Closing the page ends any connection and nothing is downloaded.

A Request for helpl>:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

Regards

Whiterabbit aka Stephen
