i just finished the game. i got halfway through the fifth city before it became unplayable. i used up all my lives and got booted back to the beginning of the fifth city ... without any of my power-ups! to me that's cruel and makes the game impossible. i tried and failed level 5-1 three or four times and decided to quest for hacks.

here's how to get a virtually untimed game: inside [game installation folder]/Atlantis Quest/Levels/ is a folder for each city. in each city folder is a series of .map files, one for each level. **back up your files before you edit them!** then open the .map files and change the number next to "Time." i added a zero to each one to give myself ten times as much time. some levels may not work when you edit them, but i had no problem with any from 5-1 through the end, 8-12.

a hack to get extra lives more quickly: open [game installation folder]/Atlantis Quest/Options.txt. change the number next to "CONST_BonusLifeScore." getting extra lives doesn't help with the central problem that there just isn't enough time.

(hacks from http://www.tap-repeatedly.com/Reviews/Atlantis_Quest/AQ.shtml)

my suggestions to the developer:

- offer an untimed option. time is the most precious commodity in this game, and there simply isn't enough.

- offer an option for more time to complete levels. with unlimited time, the game loses its edge and starts to become boring.

- if you boot players back to the beginning of a city, don't punish them by taking away their power-ups. in some situations you can't complete a level without a power-up.

- it seemed odd that the same copy appeared for each level as the pieces of the artifacts were restored. maybe there should be additional details about the artifacts every couple of levels.

random comments:

- visual/sound - i like the graphics. they're bright, distinctive, and interesting to look at. my eyes did not boggle after staring at the screen for hours on end. i really like the music, a sort of "natasha atlas meets the 4400."

- fun/challenge - i enjoyed the "out of the box" game play up to a point. i left off a long time ago in the midst of the fourth city. i think it must have become more difficult than fun. then when the game was offered this time, i revisited it and got a bee in my bonnet that i was going to finish. getting booted back to the beginning of the city and losing my power-ups was a total buzz kill. with the hack, i could finish the game, but it did lose its edge.

- storyline - OK. i'm not looking for a compelling match-3 storyline, but using the same description for twelve levels while rebuilding an artifact seemed a little too sparse.

overall, i do like the game and would recommend it with hacks. fine-tuning the timing options would make it more enjoyable.

thanks, playrix, ggotd, and whiterabbit. you rock!

Since cencor ship has been practised in the "game" section, I'll skip this part of GOTD. Gametop will do for me though : /

Hi,

Lost the game in a crash, so downloaded with ease and ran perfectly on windows 8.
A bit simple, but enjoyable!

Thank you for another game!

Thank you for the giveaway. I needed a change from Fishdom and Curse of the Witch Crow. I have repeated them so many times I know what is coming next. This is good. Have not gotten to far and some of the levels have been quite challenging. More so then other games similar to it, where the difficulty only comes toward the end. Thanks again.

Installed without any issues on Windows 7. The game appears a little dated however it does play well. Only improvement I can think of is adding a relaxed (non-timed) mode.

Thank you for the giveaway!

Still have this from last year ...still haven't finished it (some of the higher levels are quite frustrating). No problems, cursor or otherwise, on this old Vista system.

Thanks to Playrix for this nice giveaway. A real classic.

Thanks to Christiane who figured out a clever fix for the installation bug, and went to the effort of letting us all know. Much appreciated.

And lastly thanks to Stephen, without whose professionalism, attention to detail and kindness we and this website would be very much the poorer.

Downloaded and works fine on HP 64bit WIN 7 laptop (obviously it downloads in 32 bit mode but that is not an issue).

On the game itself .. as an avid fan of "Call of Atlantis" I was sort of hoping for an upgraded (better!!) version of this. In fact the game play seems much slower than "call,,,," and nowhere near as good.
Only played to the end of Greece but it wasn't exciting enough to make me want to go further tonight. Sure I will return later if only to try and complete one round.

I am disapointed that every game offered here lately seems to be essentially variations of the same game, made by some kind amateurish game generating program. Now I am fed up with hidden objects games and games such as this one who is containing tiles or marbles in a mahjong kind of game board. I want to have games that are very different from each other and are not clones of the same game. A good game should use unique simple principles that can be adopted on a broad range of situations in a game, thus sacrificing some aspects for the sake of ability to take choosen aspects to a wider use in the game.

.........................Moderator Comment..............................

Sadly all of the great game ideas have been copied to death. Also, the game giveaway team can only rely on the generosity of the developers who allow their games to be given away for free. The recession, the advent of Indie bundles and the increasing number of constant sales from many of the distributors of games have made it almost impossible to get games for free these days. We still get the occassional unusual game. If you want something different, that's free, check out MyPlayCity or Jenkat games. They have amassive catalogue of free games, tohugh you do have to watch out for toolbars etc.

I love this game, I bought the CD version years ago. I can't find it and I wanted to install it on a new laptop. But this version popped up with an InstallCore.BC virus/trojan warning (using NOD32), same as the last offering. I enjoy the GGOTD, but this isn't the first time I've backed out after getting an AV popup warning.

..........................Moderator Comment...........................

No one else has reported this problem. The fact that you have had this warning beofre would indicate your computer mnay already be infected, but not via the giveawayoftheday. The giveaway team have been giving games away since Dec 2006 and there has never been a game given away that has been infected. They check all games with several malware suites just to be sure. If it's not your computer thta's already infected, it's a false positive.

Hi Donna, thousands of community members have downloaded and installed this game with no problems. It's more liklely a problem at your end. Check the FAQ's section over in the game discussion forums. I had this problem some years ago so used a different file archiver. That solved the problem. I've linked to several free file archivers in the FAQ's thread

Just installed on Win7 64bit Home Premium. Popup "Atlantis Resource Creater" opened. It said that resources were being unpacked and that it was a one time process. I assume that is the same thing that is happening when the demo version is installed. The unpacked files are then still available when the GOTD file is installed and therefore the "Resource Creator" does not run again.

I've downloaded this and used the fix to get it to run, which it is now doing without any problem (Win 7, 64-bit). I noted that the demo from Playrix was about 93MB, whereas the initial download from GAOTD was only about 19MB - perhaps that's a clue to the problem. Anyway, it's fine now, so thank you very much for the fix.

I've just played through the first artifact (Greece) and it looks like a really enjoyable game. "Call of Atlantis" is my usual go-to game for a few minutes' R&R, but this one looks as if it will be a pleasant change from that. The graphics are lovely, the screen not cluttered and the Help is just that - clear and useful. I also prefer this sort of Match-3 - being able to swap the tiles rather than having to keep the mouse pointer over a number of tiles (more difficult if you have any sort of hand-coordination problem).

So thank you for a game that I'm sure will be a keeper and is, as all Playrix games appear to be, a very professional product!

Played ok last Giveaway Win 8.1.2 x64 Pro. Fun but gets rough past the midway point. Have to build as many Buster pieces as can for that area. Don't get too casual figuring you'll pick up extras because you'll be fighting just to solve levels.

I downloaded it using Windows 7/64 and a Download Manager which I used trying to download NamarielLegends TheIronLord which BTW, wouldn't complete in three tries. Said there was a corrupted file. Anyway today's game installed without any problem and so far has worked fine. I echo the thanks for all of the giveaways and hard work that goes in to making it all happen.

To all community members experiencing problems getting the game to get past the Atlantis Resource Creator window, there was a fix posted for this last time the game was given away. Please read the following:

YES, a fix for the problem many of us have been getting. thanks to Christiane for the suggestion and confirmed by Ramu and me.

Download the demo from Playrix and install that first, then install the game giveaway version over that. The game should then work.

http://www.playrix.com/games/pc/atlantis-quest.html

p.s. installing the Playrix demo then copy/pasting the already installed game over the playrix demo may also work.

Atlantic Quest:

aq002
Installation:

Atlantic Quest downloads to an 18.7 MB zip file that unpacks to a read me and a wrapped setup file (the orange colored file with the key symbol), plus there's a setup file with security (setup.gcd) that's protected from being hacked (because the previous giveaway system was easily cracked). This file may case some security software to alert the user to a possible malware attack, but it will be a false positive.

The game giveaway team check all game giveaways for malware using several well known anti -malware suites. There has never been a game giveaway infected with malware since the project started back in Dec 2006. (The owners know that allowing such things would compromise their buisness, so they make sure all software given away via the giveaway and gamegiveaway sites are throughly checked for all types of malware before allowing community members to download any files.

Some community members have been having problems installing games since the security software was added. It's been found that turning off your security temporarily or configuring it to accept the setup.cgd file usually sorts the problem out.

To register and install the game click on the orange colored icon. The installed game is 29.9Mb in size. and installs to the following path by default:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Playrix Entertainment\Atlantis Quest

The path can be changed to suit whatever your wishes are. Once the game is installed you can delete the giveaway setup files. There isn't a shortcut or uninstaller iinstalled to either the desktop opr Start menu programs list.

I've had problems getting this to work on both my Win 7
& Win 8 computers. I get a small window that says 'Atlantis Resource Center' I don't know how to fix it?

I don't have a Vista or XP installation set up at the moment (and won't for several months until we move house later this year).

The Game:

There have been loads of this genre given away, all with their own merits but this is one of those that has several additions that make it a cut above the rest (including Treasures of Montezuma and The Rise of Atlantis) 'in my opinion'.

Apart from the interesting story line the game play is enhanced by the use of artifact pieces that you have to clear from the playing area by moving them to the bottom of the field. This is accomplished by matching three or more symbols that tie in with the particular story line of which there are several that include Greek, Roman, Cartage, Babylonian and Egyptian. Once they are moved to the bottom they are fitted into a puzzle placed at the side of the main puzzle, and slowly build up a picture of the particular artifact. The aim being to find the lost city of Atlantis and the Golden Chimera, which I presume will be the last artifact to be built.

aq010

You can also move power ups off the playing field, which can then be used to destroy particularly difficult to get rid of tiles. These can be saved till the storage space is filled. That is at least one of each type from a hammer and shovel, both of which can be used to remove a single tile of your choice. There are three more that I’ve not discovered the use of yet; these are an oil lamp, timer and a money bag.

There is a third incentive to play which is against the clock. The quicker you remove the artifact pieces from the playing field, the greater the time bonus you get. Additional points can be gain by creating more combinations with just one move of a tile, however the more of these you make, the less of a time bonus you will get. I haven’t worked out the difference yet. You get three lives to start with so I can only think that you have to clear the artifacts within a certain time to retain your life. The further into the level set you progress, the more artifact pieces you have to remove from the playing field, and the more difficult it becomes. The longest board took me just over three minutes (with three artifact pieces), the shortest 22 seconds (with one artifact piece). I seemed to get quite high bonuses for both. There is an indicator of the amount of bonus you have accrued below the playing field that looks like a thick line of molten gold.

aq013

You can save the games progress at any point, even half way through a game which is great if you are suddenly taken from the game. You don’t have to worry about having to cancel the level and having to start from the beginning of that particular level again. You can set up multiple profiles or if you‘re not satisfied with your progress through the game you can cancel your progress and restart from the beginning again.

The options menu has the usual items such as changing sounds and music. The music is quite pleasant, but as with any music can become annoying after a while unless it’s turned down to a very low level. You can change the method of changing the tiles from a drag to a drag and drop. The left mouse button is used to move tiles. There is a difference as I’m sure you’ll discover when you play around with the options to find what’s best for you. The drag option seems the best to me, which is the default setting. It is here also that you can turn off the helpful hints menu and a separate help menu as well as change from full screen, which is the default setting to windowed mode.

Some community members did have problems with this game. You can read more comments in the game discussion forums HERE

Features:

⦁ Set out to 5 ancient civilizations
⦁ Assemble different artifacts piece by piece
⦁ Enjoy extremely long gameplay
⦁ Use special items for better playing
⦁ Great storyline
⦁ 76 mind-blowing levels

Music:

If you don't like the in game music, you should be able to exchange the music files which are located via the path below:

C:..........\Atlantic Quest\Sound\Snd\x.ogg

Where x represents the ogg files you'll want to change. Most of the files are just sound effects. You can distinguish the music files bvy the size of the file. All the music files are over 100KB. I'd keep a copy of all of the original ogg files at least until you've tested and made sure the game still runs properly. Make sure that you rename all exchanged music files with the ones you are replacing, and also make sure you convert each file to the ogg format first. :)

Conclusion:

This is one of the better Match Three games in my opinion. Very similar to The Rise of Atlantis, but with slightly different game play, if you like Match three you can’t go wrong with this one. The game play gets progressively harder as more obstacles are introduced to the game. A great family game that’s well worth 8.4 out of 10. (I’d give it a 9 out of 10, but there are too many of this genre available which takes away from the games overall enjoyment depending upon how many of these games you’ve played previously; if you've never played one I reckon you're in for a treat. Thank you Playrix Entertainment for a great take on this genre and to the GGAotD team for providing it free for us today.

Scoring:

Gameplay: 9
Graphics: 8 (remember this is now several years old)
Sound & Music: 8 (You can change the music if you wish)
Replayability: 9
Originality: 8

Total = 8.4

Problems:

The following window pops up when I first installed the giveaway version, so used the fix that Christiane found worked the last time this was given away. Once I'd done that, the game worked perfectly.

Atlantis Resource Creator

If you are posting late in the day I would also suggest posting in the main giveaway forums, in the game discussion section because I cannot moderate 24hrs a day over the weekend. If you've installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn't guaranteed). Sometimes you can still register the game after the giveaway has ended so long as you managed to start the download before the giveaway ends. I've tested this and sometimes the grace period lasts for up to 2 hours, but more often than not 1 hour is the norm.

It’s always worth checking out the free games sites as sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them. MyPlayCity (MPC) has the most with over 800 games to choose from. Today's game is available 24/7 from MPC HERE together with at least another 100 plus match three games. Do watch out for toolbars etc. Make sure you uncheck the checkboxes during installation . You can find all 140 Match 3's from MPC HERE

If you have any problems installing or getting to work today's game please go HERE for help. I've posted all of the common problems and solutions in a FAQ thread, which you can find in the sticky section of the forums by following the above link.

There are over 340 Steam deals this weekend. you can find them all HERE. If I have time I'll post a list of the best deals later today.

You'll also find some excellent deals over on the following Game sites:

GreenManGaming
Gamersgate Summer Sale
GOG
Desura
Gamestop
GameFly (Gamefly are selling off their digital distribution soon)

The Origin free game is still Bejewelled 3.

To be honest there are too many game deals around too list them all. Just visit the sites I recommend above and I'm sure you'll find something that suits you for a very decent price. If like me you prefer Steamwork games, many of the above sites also sell Steamwork games.

If that's not enough, check out the Game Discussion forums HERE for details of other games either free or on deals such as the Indie Game bundles (there's over 20 of them - If you purchased all of them you'd be paying around $80 for around a thousand dollars worth of games); or check out the four day sales at IndieGameStand. I've not updated the Indie Game bundle thread for some time, but the links provided will still take you to the appropriate sites. you can find the thread HERE. Also check out HERE link for a list of all current bundles. I've just updated the thread last night. The latest IndieGameStand game is called Dungeon Lurk II - Leona an Action Puzzle Adventure Game with roots in the classic "Point & Click" genre. The next IGS game will come live Thursday 30th October 5am (GMT)

The latest Daily Indie game is 'Litil Divil' a retro dungeon crawler - Welcome to the Underworld, where you guide Mutt, the bad luck Litil Divil, through the Labyrinth of Chaos to retrieve the Mystical Pizza of Plenty. Our 'hero' takes a fateful step through the Mortal Portal to prowl five hellish levels of treacherous tunnels with more than 50 raucous rooms of gameplay. Beware of killer spiders, bottomless swamps, ferocious furnaces... and crazed bartenders. And watch out! If you can't get Mutt to the Overlord, The Entity and The Servant will drag him to the Torture Room for a little fiendish fun.
You can get two keys if you pay more than the average, which at the time of writing was $1.28; (one for a friend or family member perhaps?). There's also 2 bundles available (Dig 2 and DIG 11) You can get these 6 game bundle for $1.49 each, or if you pay above the average, you'll get two keys for each game.. You'll find those deals HERE.

Most of the bundles retail for around $5 give or take a few dollars, but you can pay as little as a dollar for some.

A Request for help:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you've checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

Regards

You can get a free arcade game via Alawar's game box, just click the free game tab. It changes approximately every month If that's not enough, check out the Game Discussion forums HERE for details of other games either free or on deals such as the Indie Game bundles or check out the four day sales at IndieGameStand.

The latest IndieGameStand game is Bleed which you can get for $1. If you want the extra's which include Bleed alpha, Bleed Concepts and the Bleed OST. The average price when I last checked around 5.30am this morning was $1.87. This bundle ends around 4am Wednesday GMT.
There's also several indie bundles over at Indiebundle.org. Each bundle has three games and costs $5 each for the basic bundle plus a few dollars more for extras. There's two groupees bundles (The 1C bundle and the Build a Meridian bundle), an Indie Gala Mobile 3 bundle, Bundlestars 7 another Indie Royale bundle called The Lunar bundle. all bundles are excellent value for money, most of which your paying less than $5 for several games that would usually cost you a lot more.
