Since there was no review I don't know whether the game is supposed to Save Progress or not. The "Main Menu" has a "Load" function indicating, to me anyway, that there is a "Save" function. However, the game has never "saved progress" or asked me if I wished to "save" my progress.

I only have ten or fifteen minutes at a time to play, so thus far I've had to start at the beginning every time and it doesn't matter which mode I select; I've played them all and gotten up to Lv4 a couple times. Not being able to save progress is a deal breaker for me as I just don't have the time or patience to sit here playing for hours, but would like to progress in the game.

I do find myself oddly attracted to this funny little game, but if it is incapable of saving progress I will have to uninstall it.

Any Suggestions? Is it supposed to "Save Progress"?

Hi Rudy, sorry to here you are having problems running giveaways on your old operating system. I really don't know what to suggest at this juncture. Hopefully some games will work. Maybe contact the developers and ask their advice?

PS:

Maybe it is due to the special giveawayofhetday installing file that it mostly doesn't work with Win2000 even when it should do.

"... no valid Win32 application" on Win 2000 pro again!

The games on game.giveawayoftheday.com are totally useless for Win 2000 owners even when they are allegedly working with it. It's long ago when a game on this site was interesting for me AND worked...

Also make sure you are running the game with administrative privileges. (Just go to compatibility mode again and check the admin tick box)."

I've verified that my graphics drivers and DirectX are as up to date as possible and was running it as an admin. Still no joy. My graphics is of the built into the motherboard variety (Intel GMA, late 2006 vintage), so nothing exotic. I'll check out the forums. Thanks for trying. :)

Ah, Alawar! We downloaded Snowy's Lunch Rush from you guys YEARS ago (our first encounter with your site) and my daughter (now 16) and I still play it. I wish you could have other Snowy games ... or is there another place to find free downloads of them? I have a real affinity for time mgmt games as I get older ... I feel like they help keep my poor, aging brain just a little bit sharper. ;-) Feel better!

..........................Moderator comment....................

You can get several of the Snowy games for free from MyPlayCity (MPC). The games are perfectly safe to play. You won't find any Malware. However, you do need to make sure you un-check the boxes during installation and every time you start the game up otherwise you'll find a toolbar installed into your browser and maybe your home page changed to MyPlayCity. If you have decent security these can be stopped before they install. If you do accidentally install a tool bar or change your home page, it is easy en enough to sort the problem out. they are more a minor irritation that a threat.

Remember, so long as you uncheck the boxes they will not install. Whenever you close a MyPlayCity game down, it does open your browser to MPC's home page, but this is totally innocuous and once turned off is done. It's actually quite useful as it gives you the opportunity to see if MPC have added any new games. They have well over 600 decent arcade games available totally for free.

RE: Black Screen (Post 4)

I tried changing the compatibility (disable visual themes), I use XP, so the other 'ones to disable' don't seem to be there. I tried all sorts of different resolutions and refresh rates, tried 16 bit colour instead of 32 bit.... all without success. I guess this game & I were just never meant to meet. :( Thanks for the link though, it might come in handy in the future.

Don't delete the game yet. Its late in the day now and most regulars have already been and gone. I'd consider posting the problem in the game discussion forums listing all the fixes you've tried, You are more likely to get a response from the community over the next several days (while your post remains on the front page):

Ok Win 8 x64 Pro. Mouse used. Nice full screen, sliders. Game does get repetitive just filling in levels by following routines. Maybe if I choose higher high levels there'd be more badness thrown around. But the basic concept get pretty old. Thanks guys., good little kids.

How do you save cave people from drowning once they fall in the water? The helicopter won't go past the "ground" to reach them! THanks for some great games.

Call me a prude, but why does my 5 year old have to see this "cave-woman" with apparently huge tits in a bikini? It's nice to know that the bikini has been around so long.

Is this what the world has come to that this is normal and accepted for little kids?

I should have checked the posted screen shots before I wasted my time downloading this.

I guess nothing can be sold on game play unless their is huge boobs to back it up.

Shameful.

...........................Moderator comment....................

To be honest I didn't notice. To me and my family the naked body is natural and theres nothing to be ashamed of it. The depication of a woman in a bikini as a cartoon like character is hardly pornographic.

You are entitled to your opinion but from my experience such views lead to children suffering much embarrassment when they get older. I remember such a kid when I first joined the army. After a game of hockey we all had to take a shower together and this young fella wouldn't take his clothes off because he felt embarrassed. I remember feeling the same, but as everyone else was stripping off I did the same.

My father was a prude and my mother never talked about sex. Consequently I used to blush when a girl even looked at me until I was into my 20's (and married). I was lightly bullied while in the army because I never swore or talked about sex (but that was only because I was embarrassed as I'd been conditioned by my parents to think it was rude and not normal). My first wife approached me which back then was unusual and even my second and present wife made the first moves. I was always too shy to ask any girl out.

In total contrast my children have often seen my wife with no cloths on (usually after a shower or getting ready for bed). There's no embarrassment or sexuality involved it's just natural.

This is just a game with cartoon like characters. i'm sure any child will see the graphic for what it is. Harmless fun with no sexuality implied.

From other things I read on the net, it does seem that the "Father" of this game is Ugh, but someone suggested the "Grandather" would be Space Taxi. It's possible the others you folks mention may be the roots of the tree. The Great Grandfathers so to speak.
This appears to be like yesterday's game in that the mastering of precise control over the onscreen object is as important as strategy or game navigation. That, of course, sounds like an overly obvious statement. I mean that it seems to me that a developer must decide how to balance those aspects for players: on screen control, navigation of the strategy and ambiance of the game "world", and finding the right amount of information for the player to make tactical decisions while avoiding overloading the player. That last doesn't really apply here, but mainly to shooters, builders, rpgs, etc.... The balance between handling the onscreen objects and allowing the player to get down the road is a key factor in platformers, though. It's appropriate that WR mentions Turtix, where the control is pretty precise, imho, sometimes annoyingly so. You can contrast Turtix with a couple of other platforms given away here - Turtle Odyssey and Alex Gordon - where more emphasis is on experiencing the world, and the controls are more tolerant.
But this seems appropriate for this particular game, where the levels are purposely relatively confining. Mastering the control of the copter is the primary point here. The developer gets around this by making 3 modes of increasing difficulty, kids - which just gets your feet wet and introduces you to the levels - arcade - where you "only" have to refrain form killing the passengers before you pick them up - and classic - where you also have to avoid killing yourself - since after all, your copter is only made of sticks, lol. Easy, normal, and hard levels, in other words.
I haven't been able to get too deeply into this game, because I am some what coordinationally challenged and without the challenge of avoiding killing anything, the kids mode is pretty repititve, at least in the first 3 levels. Mainly a scouting mission for the harder modes. I may try to go more deeply in the arcade mode. I must admit I'm somewhat motivated by the cavebabes - :) - although their gene pool needs some outide stimulation - ;). And regularly drowning them isn't good for my dating prospects. Lol.
Which brings up a point, I haven't figured out how to recover them from the "drink". Flying right over them doesn't seem to help, and I haven't mastered setting down next to them without going under myself. Do they swim to your copter?

Two important points: first let me clear something up. This does have multiple input capabilities without switching input sources. That causes the joystick problem mentioned above but also means it has keyboard control. You can use the arrow keys to move it left and right and the up arrow to rotate the blade. For me, the mouse seems to be better for left and right and the up key for blade rotation. In fact, you can mix and match. I'm not a joystick player - not that advanced - but I suspect it's probably optimized for joystick. The second point is a problem/complaint with the way games are saved. Some of this is standard, but can be confusing for newer gamers. First, I don't see a place to click on screen in a level to get back to the main menu, you have to know to hit escape. Second - and this is a minor, but imho, inexcusable problem - you can't save a game after completing a level. You have to hit escape after starting the next level and then you'll get the save option. The natural place to save a game is just after you've completed a level. This is hardly an unsolvable coding problem and needs to be fixed. Annoying and time wasting. Also, non-gamers may not realize how saving works. You get six saving slots that all say empty, then you put a name or number or whatever in one, you can backspace delete the "empty", and that game will be saved. Part of the reason for slot savings is it allows you to bounce back and forth between games in the different modes.

Bottom line: this game may not be for me - it's largely about developing expert feel for the copter, and "feel" is not my strong suit - but I'm open minded enough to appreciate games that aren't necessarily well suited to me. For what it is, it looks fine. In other words, thumbs up. Worth $6.99 at the very least.

Initially, I couldn't get the game to respond with the mouse. It would go up to the right corner of the screen and stop. Could move it left, but not down and the chopper blade was always turning. It would, however work with the Sidewinder joystick. After fooling with the joystick, I found that the mouse started responding, and was able to control it with either the joystick or the mouse. If you are having trouble getting it to respond, maybe another control device is causing the problem.
Get well soon WR and thx for the cool games.

Thanks Bob, will try my joystick. I wonder if it was dong that for me because I had one of my joysticks connected? Never thought to disconnect it. Also have a second gaming keyboard (Wolfking) connected (In fact I have three keyboards connected at the moment I'd forgotten, my razer black widow keyboard is also connected). lol

Update,

Yeahhhh!..... the joystick worked for me to. :) When I disconnected the joystick the game worked. :D

Thanks for so many pleasant games!
Most of them i play frequently and find great joy in it. For this game i have a question: in the menu there is a possibility to 'load' a gam... but i cant find a way to save it..???
Did i miss something or is it simply not possible?
Thanks again and every week i look forward to new adventures!

..........................Moderator comment..................

I can't be sure because its been a long time since I played it. I can't play the game on my new computer. The game automatically saves as you progress to a new level. If you fail to progress it will start at the beginning of the level you were previously playing until you've gone on to the next level. There is no Save button.

Hi Sacha, sorry for the delay. See the image below. I've marked the one you need to use in between two red arrows. It's the Hotlink for websites. :)

PicDepict.com
URGENT - IMPORTANT NOTE PLEASE READ:

By the way sacha, I didn't really look at the images you posted earlier. (I needed to go lay down). Those graphical glitches look like one of three things.

!) ... You need to check to see if the card is seated properly in its socket, or the cable is connected properly.

2) ... The fan that cools the graphic card may be partially blocked with dust. (this is more likely if you keep a computer in your bedroom). Excessive build up of dust can slow or even stop the cooling fans leading to your graphics card overheating. It's important that you clean the fans as soon as possible otherwise it could lead to a damaged graphics card.

3) ... The graphics card is already damaged due usually to overheating caused by excessive dust build up around the fans and cooling vanes (if there's a metal heat sink)

I do hope its one of the first two. You must check now. turn your computer off and isolate it from the mains, ten take the side panel off. You can remove dust using a small pain brush (the type used for watercolors, though a stiffer acrylic or oil paint brush is better. If you have any cans of air that's even better as you can direct the jet of air and blow out the dust. (I always keep two or three cans around to clean the insides of my computers 9Usually spend around £15 a year on air, but its worth it. I lost a SLI set up a few years ago becasue i'd neglected to clean the grapic card fans regularily. It was one of my backup computers, but the cards were astill pretty decent, so was annoyed at myself for not taking care. The cost of replacing those cards even with cheap models could have paid for four or five years worth of canned air at the very least.

A game from 90's. I remember a game whose name is "UGH". I still keep this old one on my pc. Today's game seems its windows version. I'm very happy to find UGH's new version. Thanks GGotD.

........................Moderator comment....................

You can still get UGH (now for free) from most decent abandonware sites. Of course abandonware is a grey area legally. Many of the games now available from GOG were available on most abandonware sites until GOG found the original owners and got permission to sell them again. They've mopped up many good games that we could get for free a few years back.

Tht said and as someone pointed out a while back, when i brought this subject up last year, with GOG's versions you have DOSBox already coded in, so there's no messing around trying to get the games to work, plus you get loads of extras such as the music, manuals, and wallpapers etc.

@8 Moderator comment:

Thanks for bringing those up.

Choplifter is indeed a game like Fort Apaoclypse but made for Apple II (also 1982; later MSX and Nintendo) I wil surely look for the pc-verion you mentioned :P

H.E.R.O. is a later lookalike game from Activision released in 1984 for Atari.

.......................Moderator comment.....................

I remember playing all three games, but couldn't remember from which console as I had a few different ones back then. :) I only got rid of those games when we had an extension added to the house back in 2003. We had a large skip outside the house for three months that was emptied frequently, so I got rid of loads of old stuff including all my Cassettes, floppy's and loads of CD based games. (As well as a decent NAD record deck that I really wish I still had, a decent panasonic cassette player and a Denon amplifier plus several Warfdale speakers). I regret it now as I've since seen cassette players with a USB plug connector specifically for playing those games on modern computers. Still, you can get most of the games on ROMs for free now.

We are being spoiled this weekend. :P

Yesterday the awesome game Splotches (addictive and sometime really challenging puzzles. You wouldn't judge that from appearance; keep these kind of games coming ;) Don't forget the free Splotches screensaver at the home page, it's kind 'a nice but simple; there should be options for brownsplotions and blackholes in it too, I think)

Today, I didn't play much of it yet, but looking at Stephen's description(thanks again) this is a game very similar to a very popular game made in 1982 (that's 30 years back guys  ) for the commodore C64.

In that game you had to rescue people walking in a maze of caves, while you were controlling a helicopter, but enemy helicopters were there to shoot you down.

In Ancient Taxi, you have to transport people from cave to cave walking in a maze of platforms, while you are contolling a helicopter, but dangerous dinosaurs are there to get you down.

In both games controlling the helicopter is a delicate job to avoid crashing.
It's very much worth while to play.

In Ancient Taxi the colours are bright, atmosphere is vivid and humorous, but like all Alawar games the start screen blows right into your face (Splotches did it the right we as it were to me to say) however you can play it in windowed mode. Nice simple game.

Thanks Alawar.

C64 game from 1982 is "Fort Apocalypse".

You can still play a online java-version here http://www.classiconlinegames.nl/commodore-64/33-fort-apocalypse

Here is a youtube recording http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1A-BNafyDk

And here is an Android version http://es.appszoom.com/android_games/arcade_and_action/fortapocalypse-redux_kjo.html

Have fun.

Thanks for your feedback ALF, much appreciated. I'm sure I remember the game you mentioned. I think it may have been called H.E.R.O. - Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operation, or maybe Fort Apocalypse. There was another one involving helicopter rescues from around that time called Choplifter, (which was remade earlier this year for PC), but I don't think it was made for the Commodore 64?

When the game starts up my screen goes black. I can hear the music and moving the mouse 'sounds' like its moving through a menu, but the screen is black. Its like the game requires a resolution that isn't supported on my video card or monitor. I tried all sorts of different ones from 600x800 through 1280x1024 but the screen remains black.

Anyone have an idea what resolution it needs or if there is something else wrong?

Hi Bawdyn, check the FAQ's section that I've linked to in the problems section. There's a section that covers black screens.

I've copied the section from the FAQ's below; you can find the FAQ's section via the following link:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/11647

Black Screen:

Problem:

If you are getting the black screen problem (possibly with an error message in a blue box that says “frequency out of Range”)it usually points to a screen resolution problem. That is, the resolution you have your screen set to may not be supported by the game; or it could be the refresh rate that is the problem.

Solution:

Try setting your screen resolution temporarily to a different setting and see if that cures the problem. If that doesn't work right click on the games executable and select 'properties', then click on the compatibility mode and select the disable visual themes. This should fix the problem, if not try disabling the display scaling on higher dpi settings and disabling the desktop composition. You can also try compatibility modes for XP, especially if the game is quite old.
Other fixes include installing the latest direct X (remember that XP uses DX 9 or earlier only, Vista uses Direct X v10 or before and Win 7 Direct X 11 or before). Also try updating your graphics drivers. The main two chip manufacturers are NVIDIA and ATI (now AMD) both of which offer driver downloads for free. Just go to the respective manufactures home pages and you'll find a link to the driver download page. To find out which graphic card or graphics chip your computer uses type in Dxdiag in the search field (Vista or Win 7) or the run command (XP); this opens up the DirectX diagnostics panel. click on the display tab and look to the left panel. You should easily see what graphics card or chip you are using. (This is required information when selecting the correct download from the developers site).

If the above solutions don't work check the rest of the FAQ's section for other fixes. for example, try turning off DEP, updating your graphics drivers and Direct X etc.

Installed & activated fine on Vista 64, game runs smoothly needs a bit of fine tuning when using the mouse as it is very sensitive, simple to operate, its great fun and I can see myself getting addicted to this very easily, graphics I think are great as is the whole game, download it and have lots of irritating fun.

What a nice and funny "old time" game. The stoneage women looking good, and the stoneage men, are funny with their clubs. A good and innocent game to spent some time with.
Merry christmas to you all! ;-)

Unfortunately I'm too ill to post a full review today, also I've gone off memory as to how to play the game because today's version isn't working properly for me (this is a rare occurrence). Basically the helicopter flies to the top of the game filed and remains their so I'm unable to control it using the mouse. I had this game previously so can say its a reasonable platformer released some years ago. Well worth downloading if you want a change from the more popular Match 3's, HOG's and Time Management games.

I'm sorry it took me ages to moderate yesterdays game. I was feeling much worse than previous days. Seems like I'm getting a little better today, so hopefully will moderate a little more. It's unfortunate that I wasn't around much because we had a visit from the developer of yesterdays game, who also visited when it was previously given away and did take note and did something about one of the suggestions made the first time it was given away. It's for this reason why I always post the postscript to my reviews requesting that the community post constructive comments. Not every developer bothers to visit, but when they do, things can be improved. :)

I'll try and moderate as often as possible, but as with yesterdays game I doubt I'll be around as often as I usually am. :(

The Game::
From the options menu you can adjust the usual parameters, i.e. music and sound effects as well as toggle the game in windowed/full screen mode. you can also adjust the sensitivity of your mouse (This is especially useful if you don't own a mouse that has buttons to adjust sensitivity on the fly for example most Razer mice). There's also a toggle for turning off in game tips. This is set to on by default.

Game Modes

You'll also find a demo mode accessible via the man menu. It's only a short snippet, but serves to give you an idea of game play.

When starting a new game you are able to select one of three modes
Kid Mode
Cave dwellers don’t fall into water if a helicopter accidentally touches them.

Arcade Mode
If your helicopter touches a dweller, he will fall into water.

Classic Mode

PicDepict.com

In Game Screen with Tips

If you crash into some obstacle while flying fast, in the game mode, you will crash and die. And like in the previous mode, touching a dweller results in falling down and possible drowning.
To control the helicopter use the left mouse button to lift it up. You can drop rocks on dinosaurs or bash them directly with your helicopter. to knock them off the platforms.

PicDepict.com

The aim of the game is to pick up passengers and ferry them to other parts of the cave system. Navigating these systems can be hazardous due to other less friendly cave dwellers such as dinosaurs. These can be knocked off by dropping rocks on them or physically bumping into the dinosaurs with your pedal operated helicopter. you have to ferry a specific number of passengers within a certain time limit to be able to progress to the next level of which there are thirty.

Conclusion:

Because I'm unable to play the game today and it's been some years since i played this last I don't think it's appropriate to write a full blown conclusion to the game, that said I do remember enjoying the game. It's quite basic, but as good as other platformers given away here previously e.g. turtix

Other Game deals:

My usual additional games section will be missing today; however do check Steam (Unreal Tournament franchise and Endless Space), Gamersgate and the Game Discussion forums for various deals. Gamesgate have a sale on at the moment with some excellent bargains (daily deals include 75% off Hitman 2, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction, Homefront and Aliens v Predator plus several holiday bundles). There are yet more bundles available, for example the Humble THQ bundle which includes seven AAA games that can be had for less than $6 (The Company of Heroes trilogy, Red Faction Armageddon, Metro 2033, Darksiders and Saints Row the Third), there's also a new Indie Gala bundle available. You can get all games for less than $4 the lot (Star Wolves 3, Imperial Glory, Men of War, Men of War: Red Tide, Cryostasis, Necrovision: Lost Company, Kings Bounty and XIII Century Gold plus two more to come). Finally anther new bundle called The Bundle Stars went live two days ago with yet more AAA games. You can get Men of War: Vietnam, Off-Road Drive, Reign: Conflict of Nations, Death to Spies: Moment of Truth, Death Track: Resurrection, Real Warfare: 1242 and Real Warfare: Northern Crusades for only £5 (~$7.50), that's 95% off the usual cost of these games. (Notice that two of the bundles give you nearly all of the games in the Men of War franchise; the only one missing is Men of War: Assault Squad. Details of all the bundles still available can be found HERE in the Game discussion forums.

Also check out the didimatic site for other deals from Gamestop and GOG HERE, plus for deals on Indie games go to Desura and click on the on sale or Alpha funding tabs for some excellent bargains, finally you'll also find great sale bargains on Gamefly and GreenMan Gaming Finally, Alawar's free game (via the gamebox) has changed for everyone now to Finding Doggy, which is a similar match 3 to 4 Elements, though not as colorful.

Problems:

If you have any problems with the game, either installation issues or getting the game to work check out the FAQ's section over in the Game discussion forums. you can find it HERE

If you are posting requests for help late in the day I would suggest posting in the main giveaway forums in the game Game Discussion . If you’ve installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn’t guaranteed). It’s always worth checking out the free games sites as sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them as well.

Request for Help:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

Regards

Whiterabbit aka Stephen
